Mine disappeared as soon as leaving the nest. Didn't know what happened until I saw feathers on the ground.THAT DREADED CAT!! Good shots Joan.

Hi Daisy, Yep, I have lots of photos of both Los Berros and First Dawn (as well as a few of the one without a cultivar name--somewhere--plus additional pics of various R. californicas that my local botanic garden has which were collected in counties throughout the state--also *somewhere*). I wish gardenweb allowed posting of multiple pics directly from one's computer so that I could more easily post a series of shots for comparison. Since I haven't uploaded most of them to photo sites. From what I have on Flickr: Rosa californica 'First Dawn' Rosa californica 'Los Berros' Below is the first flower on a new baby plant in a 1 gallon container of Rosa californica purchased at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden's Grow Native Nursery. I'll have to look at the pot (which I kept) to see who grew it, but as best I recall it was Moosa Creek Nursery. I believe they have some in stock now from El Nativo Growers (in pots next to First Dawn from Suncrest--and the plants even without flowers look different). well, hmmm, i didn't know pigs couldn't swim but it certainly stands to reason, considering how they are built. i wonder if they float?? the built-in stairs are a little too steep for piggy navigation but if there was a pig in the world who would try, it would be arnold! LOL thanks, lisa! actually, i ended up having to re-home the goats. they were just too work-intensive after my back surgery. they now live on a 30 acre pasture where they are up to their knees in grass with a whole bunch of children to spoil them. :) the dogs are well, wish i could say the same for my bluebirds. had 4 eggs hatch but the babies have been dying off one by one. i think, because the nest box is out in the open, they are simply baking in the sun. :( the pigs gets the same cookies the dogs get, they are little 1" puppy cookies. they occasionally get frosted mini wheats or seedless grapes for treats, too. the mud on arnold's behind was so thick, his tail got stuck in mid-wag! :o and, introducing the very unusual, very rare, very sought-after two-toned oinker!

That is what caused me to pay attention to that one, with so much Spicebush ST traffic these days.. Nonetheless, If I were forced to make a statement unjustified by sample size, I would say that the blacks are not as large as the yellows. What do you think? Many of the yellows that I see are as large as any Giant (larger than many, because Giants vary). Fanciful thought tempered by appreciation of the real : Although it would be a thrill to have a 10-foot wingspan beauty in the yard everyday, I never would exchange the numerous normal sized butterfiles for it.

Bluebirds stopped outside my window then they took control of the bath. Totally disrupted my trip to the grocery store, and 189 pictures later, I have to decide whether to pay for Flickr Pro or not because I've reached my 1,000 picture limit on a free account. We'll see. Some really good shots, a good moment-by-moment story, but until I can find a photo sharing website, here are a couple of shots from this morning. Not sure how he got doves to swim like ducks, but anything is possible... Jane - who has lots of pictures to process.

Those are so cool...We have a pair nesting below garden...They laid 4 eggs about a month ago and 1 1/2 weeek or so later they were nowhere to be found (eggs)...but they have laid another 5 eggs and I'll be keeping my eye on them as close as possible...I hear you can train them to eat out of your lap...I would love for them to be successful...plus I would really like to get some pics...Again very cool photos, Joan...

Very nice pictures, thanks for sharing. I haven't seen a bluebird in years, maybe they don't care for urban areas. There may be some north of me by a river with lots of wooded areas.

I've been seeing people post photos of the great blue heron, and low and behold, a local newspaper photographer got a shot of one wading in the river. I will definitely have to check that out. I didn't know we had any where I am.
