Need rescue help with transport

Hi,

I have been approved for 2 chow mix pups from a rescue in Jackson Mississippi, I am in Boston (Revere, actually) and we (the rescue and me) are trying to find transport for them.. rescue transport. I know that some who post here are involved with rescue... can anyone use their rescue contacts to make this happen for the 2 pups. The pups are just 8 weeks old.

This is just a wild, desperate hope....and thought I would throw it out here.

You would be doing 2 wonderful things... these pups will be the luckiest pups ever and you would be helping to heal our broken hearts.. we lost my chow, Toby on February 16, he was 14 years and 7 months old.. a sweeter dog there never was, except for his littermate brother Tibby who we lost in emergency surgery on March 18, 2006.... they were the love of our life... we rescued them at 10 days old....we miss them more than you can imagine and we want and need to help 2 more chow pups... there are so many chows in shelters, so many that don't get a chance because they have a "bad reputation....undeserved, IMO.

Anyway, I'd be very grateful if someone could help. I'll check this board for any responces and if you want to email me....

The worst thing you can do is adopt online, sight unseen.

Why does this "rescue" place just happen to have 2 8 week olds and how many 8 week olds will they have next month? I ask because many back yard breaders say they are a rescue group but the poor dogs needs to be rescued from them.

Hey.. give me a little credit, here. They are a real rescue I have talked with before and they know that I was was looking for chow or chow mix dogs. I'm looking for assistance with transport...not criticism...

Please, I'd be glad to speak with anyone who can offer transport help using their contacts with rescue, Trust me...this is legit.

Update! I got all 8 roses in the ground today, and after 4 hours that is a magical journey I never plan to undertake again. I only had space to plant them about 3-4' apart, and I amended the soil with peat moss. Luckily this area has nice black dirt, no idea why, but it's one of the areas with better soil quality. I would have gotten a picture, but by the time I thought to, I was too filthy to go back inside the house to find the camera. Some highlights include spraying myself in the face with the hose TWICE, digging up a 6' honeysuckle tree to be planted elsewhere (it just showed up one day and I decided to keep it), clearing out the whole bed of overgrown daylilies and Bishop's Weed, and having to eventually take off my shoes due to caked on mud and just go at this project barefoot and crazy-looking as God intended. I also learned that accidentally touching rose fertilizer pellets with your bare hands hurts like hell. Good to know! Thank you everyone for your help! I will try and update if I have any further news as to how things are going.

Let's divide and conquer, Ianbeatty. In order to save these plants you will first need to ensure that you can improve the current growing conditions, and sometimes even the most experienced of growers have problems providing the best of all the combination for healthy plants: 1) Light - How much light can you give your plants? I'm assuming they were kept indoors by a window without much sunlight, as you can see most of the plants are extremely etiolated. The last guy seem to be a Echeveria Black Prince, which will change its coloration into a deep maroon when exposed to prolonged long. Right now, yours is green, which means it very under nourished from proper light. Word of caution, I'm also not telling you throw your plants and bake them in the hot sun immediately, you would need to slowly introduce them to full sun in a couple of hours increment each day. Else they will get sunburnt, and it is permanent! 2) Soil/Water - I don't think I can explain much here. Refer to this diagram on why pots without drainage will eventually rot your plant's roots. Succulents are similar to cacti, they prefer dry soil for most of the time, but they also need the soil to be porous and arid. Mixing in lava stones will help, but I'll suggest you to start a new batch of sterile soil and perlite, and toss the existing soil. Judging from your last pic, you do not ever want is algae or moss mixed into your soil. 3) Once you figured out your new pot and soil, and ensure you can provide sufficient light, you remove all of the plant from the pot and clean the roots. Lay them out on a piece of paper towel and snap more pictures of the roots once its cleaned. We can give you better advise from there. Something more advance is that you should behead your Echeveria and re-root it like how Andy does his here, you will have a much healthier plant in the long term. Bernard

Unfortunately it's quite hardy here. As long as the ground doesn't freeze, it won't die. Looks like it needs a MUCH bigger pot. The roots make tubers that store water, so it doesn't need to be kept moist but those roots need room to do their thing. Should grow prolifically in bright shade, no direct sun needed unless you're at very high latitude. (IDK about the kind Dave has, too turned off by digging up 50-60 volunteers of the other to want to find out. They can't be pulled, they just break off.)

Hi Ashlynn, I did the same thing you did not too long ago with an Echeveria from Wal-mart. I came here and asked for advice and I was told to pull it out of the soil, clean the root and check it for rot. I wasn't sure what rot looked like, but I took some scissors and snipped the very bottom of the root off and I found that the entire inner column of the root was basically...melted. I snipped and snipped at the root until there was none left; the entire thing was affected by the "rot". I didn't try the beheading thing b/c I thought there wasn't enough healthy root, but I did save some leaves to see if they would put out roots and one did! Perhaps your case isn't as severe as mine, but I suggest you follow all these kind people's advice and mix yourself a well-draining soil. I've found out the hard way that big box stores sell succulents that aren't potted in the right soil--and they overwater, of course. Good luck!

For dogs going to directly to new homes on a transport the coordinator will require that the rescue has spoken with your vet, found a rescue in your area to visit your home, and that the animals are altered (even puppies.) Ghey will also need to have a health certificate. Some transporters require that there is a rescue in your area that will be a "safety net" and take in these puppies if they do not work out in your home.

MS to MA is a very, very long transport and transports that long usually do not get filled. Realistically, you should be looking into companies to hire to drive the puppies to you.

I'm wondering why you don't fly down there and then take a one-way rental car home. Its fairly simple to arrange through a few phone calls.

Though, the price of gas may make flying back with the pups, just as economical.

justusbarkers is correct on the proceedure. I've run legs of transports before, but the paperwork had to all be in order. And yes, the pups had to be altered, with shots, vet certificate, and the destination had to be throuroughly checked out with a home visit and everything first.

My suggestion would be to get a local rescue involved to complete those steps that you can on your end, and make sure the rescue on the other end will take care of the medical stuff before you even proceed.

I'd probably have them shipped counter-to-counter (aka Delta Dash). That way you avoid cargo and they are hand carried to and from the plane and kept in an office before departure and after arrival.
I've shipped birds this way many times.

Look for a flight that is direct, non-stop. If your town isn't on the flight itinerary then find the nearest city, make the arrangements, and be prepared to drive that distance to pick them up.

That's what we ended up doing, Annz.
The reason I was having a problem was I was mistaken in thinking that the rescue required using Continental.. they don't fly the proper planes out of the airport in MS... so then i tried for days to find transport help getting them from MS to New Orleans. And neither the rescue or I was willing to take a chance with a crowed transport with such young pups. I ended up finding a rescue group that does small, personal transports in the MS, TN, GA area. Anyway, the transport coordinator offered to drive to MS (to her home in another MS city (that's a 7 hr. round trip) and keep the dogs overnight, in her own home, and take them to the the Memphis airport (3 hrs. round trip). She said NO was too great a distance. Not a hitched ride on a transport.. nope, this woman was going to personally drive to get them in her own car! She mentioned the airlines that her group has used and one of them was Delta Dash. I called Delta and they fly out of the rescue shelters city. Cleared it with the rescue and problem solved. Now there was no need for a transport. The pups will go from MS to their new home, with us, in Boston.
But, that woman isn't the only one to offer help.. and I could not offer any money in return for help, I found a retired pilot's animal transport and they told me that they could probably help, too.
So there are good people out there and I knew I would find them if I looked long enough and hard enough!

The 2 pups get here tomorrow evening! I am beyond ecstatic!
