using fpe on cabinets--do i have to use grain filler?
Comments (1)I really think only you can make this decision. Of whether or not the cabinets will look less builder grade to you if the grain shows. However, I'll say this. The superlative durability of the FPE ECO will not change, whether you use grain filler or not. THAT is the primary reason to use this paint on your cabinets. While yes, it is also beautiful, it is the hard as a rock durability that made me choose it over anything else for my cabinets and exterior house woodwork....See MoreDo you have a storage cabinet above your toilet?
Comments (15)Well.....call me a genius for asking a bathroom question on the kitchen forum. I got more responses here then BF. Who knew? HA! Some people here on the KF probably read the subject line and think, "that pupwhipped must have a screw or two loose." I may, but bigger problem is the two big glasses of Chardonnay I had on July 4th eve last night. YUM! A few kind people did respond on the BF with pics. There were pics of cabinets deeper then 11 inches, so I guess it can work. I love the look of all the ones that have been posted including alku05's and momj47's above. My room is very small, though, with a door at each end, so I wonder if my cabinet might look like the "Cab that ate Cleveland." If I could recess it a little that would help. Iglooie, can you really recess a cabinet that is not specifically designed for that purpose? Duh, could be sounding like an idiot again. And, of course, my girlfriends, most mens can't change the TP holder. My hubby is so handy and hard working, and will do most any and all things. Not that! But, pssssst, since none of you know me and never will, I'll tell you a secret. My MIL had four boys and she was an absolute clean freak. She could not deal with the "messy misses" at the toilet. She taught all her sons to "sit" and never stand for any action going on at the toilet. Get my drift? I thank her for that. Never had any misses or splashes from my hubby. Now, if only he could change the TP holder he would be perfect. Thanks to all for your kind responses. pup...See MoreDo you have a 3" filler pull-out? Then I have a ? for you.
Comments (19)Thanks, Lisa--it took long enough! The designing, that is. Like a year or more. I like the second picture a lot. The cabinet hardware is casual and the same color as the boards, so it all does look finished and intentional. The first picture is more formal of the cabinets, but the books and oatmeal make it more casual. The boards would look fine as they are, all a-tilt, if the cabinet were finished. As it is, it looks like the door is missing. If that opening were trimmed out flush with the doors/drawer fronts, it would look vastly better. The second one doesn't have that issue because the cabinets are inset. I think it will function for you just fine. But...don't you have a 4.5" gap? Or is that without considering the box? I thought you meant a 4.5" space within the box like SJHF, which is why I was encouraging you to do a pullout. If it's 4.5" including the box, and therefore a 3" gap, you're right that the open space makes the most sense, with or without a door. (I had one with door in a previous kitchen and it was right handy. )...See MoreHow much space do you have between your upper and lower cabs?
Comments (24)I learned something interesting from my contractor when we discussed mounting the wall cabinets a little higher so I could have enough space for certain appliances as well as a light rail. My contractor told me that I'd need to customize the cabinets by either reducing the height of the wall cabinets or increasing the height of the full-height cabinets (like the pantry and double oven cabinets.) Otherwise, mounting wall cabinets higher would result in cabinets where the tops don't line up. jayne p.s. I reduced the height of the wall cabinets to 34 1/2. I probably could have been fine with 35 inches but there's no way I would have known it until the end of the installation so better this way than not being able to cover the undercabinet lighting....See Morebrunosonio
