using fpe on cabinets--do i have to use grain filler?

I don't really mind the look of painted cabs where you can see the grain, although I definitely prefer white painted cabs w/o the grain. My painter said he will use the FPE brushing putty on my oak kitchen cabs, but that will cost an extra $850-$900 (which I don't really want to spend). He then said exactly what is was thinking...I already put $900 into crown molding and light rail for these builder grade cabinets to dress them up, another $200 for adding glass to two cabinets, and I'll be paying over $2000 to have him paint them for me--if I keep adding more to the job, it just isn't worth it for lower end cabinets. He said if I wanted to put that much money into them, I should have just replaced them. So I really don't want to add more to this job. Is it going to look okay to use the FPE Eco paint (in off-white) on these cabs, w/o filling in the grain? Or is filling the grain a must with this paint?

Thanks again!
