Hi, Jon1270, we are not planning on reroofing the 2 yr old roof. Just the part we couldn't afford to do 2 yrs. ago. we want to do the rest of the roof now since we are doing an addition. but the gc recommends just putting a second layer on top of the old roof instead of a tear off. we did a tear off 2yrs ago that's what was recommended at the time. Ron6519, you can see all roofs at the same time. but i'm concerned a second layer on some parts and one layer on the other will look funny?

In this situation the roof ridge carries 2/3rd of the roof tributary load and 1/3 distributed to the side walls [this is no joke situation]. Strictly speaking a roof ridge post [can die into the top of the ceiling beam/joist ] and the ceiling beam/joist support "king" post do not have to be in an alignment. You need to contact an engineer, to make sure: a) The ridge is sufficient b) I really dislike 2x(some structural members) of the top of a king post because of axial momentum. An engineer approved steel post to beam e.g. Simpson Strong-Tie Beam Bracket to connect to the king post will be so much better. c) A ceiling joists should have sufficient compres......

You're right to be concerned about how your warm toned stone and brick will look with a gray roof. The area I live was built in the early 1970's so lots of warm tones, and some of the replacement gray roofs make the whole house look really off. There's a reason your original roof is brown. What colour were your original windows?
