King Crab Legs

Got four nice ones tonight for dinner. Should I simmer them in Old Bay spice and for how long? I'm a northerner and we love to eat them but don't know how to cook them? Help please.

No No No. Don't simmer. They're usually already cooked. Just steam them 'til hot. You could add the Old Bay to the water used for steaming if you wish.

Ingredients
1 lb snow crab legs
paper towels
plastic wrap
Directions
1 Wrap frozen crab legs in a couple paper towels." if not frozen,dampen paper towels".
2 After crab legs are wrapped with paper towels, wrap with plastic wrap.
3 Microwave for 4 minutes on high.
4 Ummm enjoy!

Woke up to breakfast in bed this morning. Last night was homemade merguez sausages (lamb, curry, cumin, etc), and kale with cannellini beans. Oh, and we got called over to the neighbors for an impromptu concert on the new piano they got the kids. I taught the youngest the baseline to "Heart an Soul" (it's one of the very few songs I remember) and she spent the better part of the day getting it right. The kids are hilarious/smart and total hams, so it was pretty amusing. Your seafood sounds good, Michael. As does what I assume to be your summer off! Between boating, gardening and such, I bet you find an outlet for your energy... maybe you won't even require an insane amount of ibuprofen when you're finished. Thursday through Saturday was unbearable as usual. Our village promotes village-wide garage sales, and it seemed there was one at every sixth house. I've got nothing against garage sales, but imagine ten times the normal amount of traffic in your neighborhood, trucks pulling trailers making inexplicable U-turns, nobody obeying stop signs, and cars making stops for no good reason... I'm happy to see it end every year. Today is rainy and chilly, so I don't get to play outside, but here are two pics I took yesterday, and one I took a couple weeks ago. msazadi, cold part (of Maryland) is right but not even close to what some of the guys have in areas on this web site! Check out some of the ones living in Maine/Montana/Canada/whatever! Hell, to them (rightly so) I'm practically living in a beach resort, LOL. However don't ask me to agree with that! I've been thinking of moving to Florida/ Mexico/ wherever but it's not as simple as it sounds, there are underlying problems that make one stop and think a lot, once you start checking out things. Besides I just want to start eating well with out going out every dam night! It sounds great to a lot of people that you can afford it , however it gets "OLD" really fast!! My favorite question in a great restaurant is "Do you use MSG in your cooking", invariably you get the NO, NO, everything is natural, LOL,LOL! Thanks for that info! That restaurant is in San Gabriel, which is a bit of a trek but worth it to get good Chinese food. The restaurant when we went for dim was called Elite Chinese Restaurant, in Monterey Park, which is adjacent to San Gabriel. Pretty much no one at Elite spoke English, but we went with a Korean friend who was fairly fluent in Chinese and could at least read the bill when it came. Most of the good Chinese restaurants are in the San Gabriel Valley, which includes Alhambra and Rosemead as well as San Gabriel and Monterey Park. It's over an hour to get there from here, even with good traffic, but we did go the the San Gabriel nursery to get our Kaffir lime tree and then had Vietnamese food on our way back. If we had been more informed, we probably would have gone for Chinese food while we were in the area, but Kevin has downgraded his phone from a Blackberry to a pay as you talk cell phone, saving almost $100 a month, and we could not surf after we got there. If we go to San Gabriel for food, we will probably want to go as a group and take someone who speaks Chinese. Lars

Lou, I have a similar recipe that I use for deviled crab, and I have also substituted canned tuna for the crab with good results as well. It is also baked and then broiled. I'll have to try the salmon recipe, although I really like Marilyn's fresh salmon cakes, and I had no problem with hers falling apart. I'll have to look at her recipe again. I have a feeling now that it was the type of bread I used, as rococogurl suggested. And the recipe does call for fresh bread crumbs as opposed to dried ones. The end result was still very good, even though it was difficult to get them to stick together. I'm considering adding a bit of potato starch to the insides to see if that will make them "stickier". Carol, I had saved your recipe before (it was one of only two that I had saved), but I neglected to look at it before I started. I'll try yours next time, as it looks really more like what I wanted, which is why I saved it in the first place. As for the recipe from the Anapolis native (I saved that one also) - what is regular mustard? My first thought is that it is dried, but it might mean prepared mustard. Crab meat is so cheap right now that I will be making more variations. The first batch of cakes I did not refrigerate, but the second batch had been refrigerated over night, and it had the same problem. I'm pretty sure it is the type of bread, which gave an excellent flavor, BTW. Thanks for all the help! Lars

We slit the Legs before cooking. Makes it easier to eat.

We eat King Crab legs alot...we usually just put them on the BBQ (because we're usually eating them with a BBQ filet or something) until they're warmed up. They should already be cooked. I personally don't care for Old Bay so I dont put anything on them. I do make a melted butter/garlic mixture to dip them in though. Yummy!!!

We have put them in the oven before too, or you can steam them, but I never submerge them in water to "cook".

I always cut them long ways ahead of time too...much easier to get the meat out when the shells are hot. Be careful, they're very prickley.

They're already cooked. You can heat them up or eat them cold. I like them cold with lemon or hot with butter (and lemon).

I cut mine open with a pair of sharp kitchen shears.

Your making me drool. It's been quite a while since I've had any crab legs. I love them. I eat them like Marilyn. Melted butter with lemon juice in it. Hmmm, I wonder if they're on sale with it being Lent. I better put that on my grocery list.
