I haven't posted in a while. Very busy in the orchard garden. The framing is done on my new duck / goose house.

I guess I'll answer this since no one else has, even though I'm probably too late, and I'm not a professional. My only qualifications are watching a bunch of landscaping shows on TV, reading books on gardening and landscaping, and experience building some walks of stone in my own yard. I think that your patio was not built properly. I'm currently building a patio behind my house and I'm in the process of digging out a lot of dirt to make it level. It would be easier to just build everything on top of the current level of dirt, but then you have a big drop off at the end. I'm not sure how the cement was used under your patio, but crushed granite is usually used under a patio that has no cement. Unless that drop off at the end is made out of something like concrete, it seems to me that it would just wash away with the rain. I've always seen patios be as level with the surrounding ground as possible. My patio is on a hill, so I'll have a small retaining wall around part of it because I dug into the hill. A friend of mine has a patio that comes right off the back of his house, but has a boulder retaining wall to raise the patio up to the level of his doors coming out of his house. His is not just a foot high bump like yours, but a 3-4 foot tall wall made of boulders and a garden above the boulders before the patio starts. I have a deck on the back of my house, but before I built it, a landscaper suggested that patios are nice because if you have a larger group of people that can't fit, they can overflow onto the grass because it's the same level. With a deck, I can't do that, neither can you, which negates one good reason for having a patio in the first place. I also have never seen a patio made with a drain in the middle. They're usually made to slope slighty away from the house so that rain runs away from your house.

I agree that it would be best to start the seeds inside. I recommend using soil blocks...here is a link http://www.pottingblocks.com/ I have built several cold frames and my experience is you can use whatever framed glass you can find. I would say the the minimum size would be about 2'X4'. Often you can find recycled wood or aluminum framed windows free or very cheap. Remember that the glass must have a way to be opened for sunny days. Do a google search for "cold frames" and you will get thousands of hits which will give you great ideas.

Erin, I dunno.... Its June. We had two 95 degree days here last week. At work when I was digging stuff out of our intermodal containers I felt like I would come out scorched. The nursery must push their shipping times until they start having to issue too many refunds. Did they try to talk you into next day air at least? For mail order, and it seems my stuff comes from Oregon or Pennsylvania, I try for after Halloween or before tax day in April. Sometimes I can't resist a random ebay purchase lol. But I try for the cooler seasons. Far as what to do with the bent tree, I say give it a few weeks to straighten out. It is difficult to undo any damage prying on branches does. Good luck! And glad to hear they took care of you and you do not sound like you are giving up on trees!

When I installed a floating floor in a house I sold, I had the same situation. I found some quarter round that matched the flooring and glued it to the sliding door track.

Oh wow, how neat. Not what I expected at all. Incidentally normally I do not like net photos framed except in rare cases.

How fortunate to have all that space! Being alone, I couldn't manage it, but always dreamed of living out and away on a farm or acreage. And I have a farm, just can't live on it because I couldn't cope by myself with all the complexities of it.

And it's too far away (50 miles) to do anything on a regular basis of my own there. I tried it for a weekend. Wasn't scared at all, didn't lock the doors, didn't know how to turn on the electricity that runs the pump that flushes the toilet. In the winter with the snow and long driveway, it would not work for me.

Oh I had dreams for that place! It's a major disappointment in my life, I hate the way it is there, very utilitarian. I'd want to redo the whole place which would cost megabucks.

Here is an update on the duck / goose house. All the metal work is done except the green fascia trim.

Aliska, Sorry about your dreams.
I'm more on the utilitarian side, less on esthetics side. Don't get me wrong I like things to look good, but function is more important.
Living 50 miles out you would have to be a handyma'am. Electricity, heating, plumbing.
As for the cabin fever, there is always us crazys on the Garden Web.
