Yellow Rose...

Yellow Rose Of Texas. My neighbours pasture is full of these(prickly pear) but I was never at home during the day to get a good photo, then I realized, "hey, I've got one on my front porch." So here it is.

Not the best quality...also taken in late afternoon with low light.

That's a nice flower Kt.

Here is the rest of the song:

(words & music by wise - starr / lance - sinclair)
Oh the yellow rose of texas is the only girl i love
Her eyes are even bluer than texas skies above
Her heart's as big as texas and wherever i may go
I'll remember her forever because i love her so

There are so many roses that bloom along the way
But my heart's in amarillo and that's where it will stay
With the yellow rose of texas so i'd better get there fast
'cause i know i was her first love and i want to be her last

Oh the yellow rose of texas is the only girl i love
Her eyes are even bluer than texas skies above
Her heart's as big as texas and wherever i may go
I'll remember her forever because i love her so

The eyes of texas are upon you all the live long day

Yellow Roses. Harrisons Yellow?

susan, I was over there today, she wanted me to see how the Harisons are loaded with buds. They are, but the blooms aren't quite as spectacular yet, but it is early for our zone. You should have seen that scene today. In just one year, that group of Harisons has almost enclosed that azalea, hard to believe the several bigger plants put out so much new growth in one year. In time, she may have to prune it, but she doesn't like to; I'm inclined to let them go their way myself. Even the leggy one wasn't noticeable with all the new growth. Yes, they are wonderful! You should see my spindly little thing with two buds on it. I'll try to find the rose id forum but probably won't know what the other one is.

Vaporvac, I nearly lost mine. Originally It moped around for awhile until I moved it to a nice sunny spot nearly on the edge of where my hose reaches. During the summer I rarely watered it but it seemed to do OK with that and seemed to do a little better every year. It grew to be the size of a large shrub and would bloom in several flushes. It struck me that it more strongly resembled its rosa moschata parent than Graham Thomas in any way. That was a good thing for me because GT was one of the many Austins that did not succeed here. BTW, Lemon Zen is definitely lemon yellow. My memory of GT (which might be a little foggy- it's been awhile) is that it was a little darker and a warmer yellow. Last summer, the drought we had was substantial enough that I thought I would lose LZ. I moved it again to where it would get regular water but be in morning sun and dappled shade the rest of the day. Buff Beauty was flourishing there. Long story short- Lemon Zen was NOT HAPPY. I potted it up this May and put it with the other potted roses waiting to be planted. It is coming back but looking a little rough around the edges right now. This year the heat and lack of rain is worse than the year before. I don't know where I'm going to place this rose but it will need to be in full sun and hopefully still get regular water.

There is a new yellow HT called Amy. VERY limited release. It will probably be another few years before it will be available. Soft yellow blooms with petals that are made out of leather. Good vigor, beautiful foliage. This will eventually be the yellow HT everyone wants.

Thanks, Saskia. I've grown GC at least16 years. I need to check my records. It's grafted on Dr Huey, and I bought it from my favorite local nursery as a five gallon plant, so it probably was about already blooming when I picked it up in May years ago. It's been a big rose for a long time, but I don't remember the details. It does have scent, but I can't describe anything--I'll head outside and check a bloom. It's very hot and dry right now, and the scent on my roses takes time inside to really show up this time of year. It will hit about 100F today, and that evaporates scent terribly. I'll be back before long with a scent report. Diane In 2016. I'll try to find some really early photos.

Thank You All for the kind remarks. Now I wish I could have gotten a nicer picture for y'all. The neighbours pasture was almost solid yellow from the blooms, which is rare, since they rarely bloom so heavily.

Thanks Again.

It looks more like a cactus than a rose. Is that what they look like? I have never seen one and assumed it was some special kind of rose.

I like the photo even if it was in low light. Brighter and you risk overexposure which is worse IMO.

Thanks, and yes, it IS a cactus, named The Yellow Rose Of Texas. I'm sure there are other yellow blooming plants that claim the same name to fame, but this is the original one.

It is one of dozens of varieties of prickly pear cactus that grow across the state. Flowers are generally red to yellow, and/or a mixture of both colours.

I guess it IS a special kind of rose, one that is never handled. If you think that a 'true' rose has thorns, try touching one of these, you'll be picking out tiny thorns for a few days.

Beauty...with the desire to touch, but once bitten...twice shy...
