Yellow Rose...

Yellow Rose Of Texas. My neighbours pasture is full of these(prickly pear) but I was never at home during the day to get a good photo, then I realized, "hey, I've got one on my front porch." So here it is.

Not the best quality...also taken in late afternoon with low light.

Nancy, I recently bought the most beautiful bright all yellow rose about 5 days ago and it looks like it is going to bloom any time now. It will por rain tomorrow, but if it opens the bud on Saturday, I will post a pic, it's called "Midas Touch". Check back, don't forget. I can't wait to see the color of this bloom, the bud is gorgeous!

I like alot of strong colors. What I found interesting to do was to put the plants I was buying together and then immediately I could see if they didn't work as a group. I also find the white and light colored roses in my bed help balance things out. In your situation I may consider swapping out one of the strong colors for a white (like Iceberg) which will give they eye a resting place that is still really pretty and help focus attention on the other two. Here is one shot of my rose bed. Imagine taking the white ones out and putting in a saturated yellow in their place. Here is a shot with saturated orange and pinks. Again you can imagine a strong yellow next to them and see what you think. I've been considering a yellow for my garden as I used to have Golden Wings but it got too big so we took it out. While I love saturated yellow, I have problems figuring out where I would put it. Instead I'm considering more subtle yellows like Chantilly Cream. However, I really do love Sparkle and Shine which is a bright pure yellow so may yet find a place for it.

I am in the humid midatlantic with intense blackspot. Julia is going to be shovel pruned at the end of the season. Yellows I would recommend include South Africa, Yellow Submarine, and Solero. They all have very different growth habits. South Africa is a deep non-fading golden yellow. It is very healthy although nothing in my climate stays clean throughout the season. Solero is a low spreading rose in a sweet baby duck yellow. The blooms are small but abundant. Yellow Submarine is one of my favorites. There are a couple yellows I enjoy, but I’m not sure I would recommend. Tottering Gently By is lovely and I like it’s shape and single blooms, but it does have more blackspot than the favorites above. Moonlight Romantica in it’s 3rd year has been a but disappointing, but It does stay pretty clean although it is slow to repeat. I may try it in a different spot. I don’t reccomend Teasing Georgia despite it being very lovely. I know many others who love this rose though so your mileage may vary. It is a beauty though. I also do not recommend Winter Sunset. Again, it is lovely but I plan to replace it because it has awful blackspot. when she is good she is very, very good, but when she is bad she is horrid.

Thank You All for the kind remarks. Now I wish I could have gotten a nicer picture for y'all. The neighbours pasture was almost solid yellow from the blooms, which is rare, since they rarely bloom so heavily.

It looks more like a cactus than a rose. Is that what they look like? I have never seen one and assumed it was some special kind of rose.

I like the photo even if it was in low light. Brighter and you risk overexposure which is worse IMO.

Thanks, and yes, it IS a cactus, named The Yellow Rose Of Texas. I'm sure there are other yellow blooming plants that claim the same name to fame, but this is the original one.

It is one of dozens of varieties of prickly pear cactus that grow across the state. Flowers are generally red to yellow, and/or a mixture of both colours.

I guess it IS a special kind of rose, one that is never handled. If you think that a 'true' rose has thorns, try touching one of these, you'll be picking out tiny thorns for a few days.

Beauty...with the desire to touch, but once bitten...twice shy...
