Species: Rosa primula -- only available at Hortico. The flowers are a beautiful pale yellow, and the foliage is scented of spices all summer long! I love gently brushing the leaves so that they release their scent. It blooms once in early spring, but the foliage is out for the entire season. :)

I'm following because we took out our one yellow rose this year.

Golden Wings had a nice fragrance, grew really well and was cane hardy. It also bloomed alot. The problem was it attracted the Japanese Beetles like no other in our rose bed so the flowers were completely decimated by noon. The only pleasure I got from it was cutting blooms first thing in the morning.

I would like to get another rose in the yellow or yellow/orange family so that there is some contrast in my cut flower arrangements.

I saw Julia Child at our local nursery. It is very true rich yellow. I don’t have one but it seems to have great reputation. Here is a video.

MM, have you thought about contacting Matt at High Country Roses? This is his specialty. Well, maybe not yellow roses, specifically, but roses that will succeed in the Intermountain West.

When I needed to ask questions about specific roses in the past, he was very helpful. I'll bet he would know which roses would work for you and your husband, too.

@Kes Z 7a E Tn I call Matt too much as it is 😅 But no, I haven't asked him about this because I'm not sure I like any of the cold hardy yellows HCR carries. At least not from pictures, I know seeing a rose in person is different though.

Magpie, my favorite yellow is Julia Child, followed by Golden Celebration. But I'm not sure either rose is reliably hardy to zone 5b. Bernstein-Rose (bernstein means amber) often is quite amber, but I don't know where you might find it (maybe Heirloom), and again, I don't know about hardiness in your zone. It stays small. Ask around about Soleil d'Or, and R. foetida. I can't grow them because they aren't roses for a humid climate, but you don't have that issue. I saw Soleil d'Or once on Staten Island (before it died) and it really is something special.

This is Yellow Brick Road, my favourite yellow, with something like a hundred buds this spring :) The flowers do fade to cream, so this may be an issue for you, but it's very healthy, tip hardy most winters, and there are always at least a few blooms on it from end of June till October. And it's fragrant!

I grow it on an obelisk, because it has a tendency to grow long laterals that flop.

My favourite non-fading yellow is South Africa, but it is much more tender, and not fragrant.

First a true confession- I love big yellow roses. The kind I love won't grow for you (tea-noisettes) but there are some that you can grow that I can only dream about. Hazeldean? I've never grown it myself, I just admire the photos and description on HMF. I don't think something happy to z2 is a good fit for the southeast. Maybe Sheila knows something about it from her time in Alaska?

BTW if I could grow Soliel d'Or I totally would. Even roses with Sd'O in their ancestry aren't happy here but you don't need to worry about blackspot. Also, Magda, I always thought Yellow Brick Road was underrated. A rose that's yellow, fragrant, healthy, remontant and able to get through a z5 winter is hard to find. I'm kind of sorry that I didn't get it when I could have because it's nearly impossible to find it now.

I'm going to the local rose park today and hopefully they'll have some yellows to see, BUT the rose parks here don't label so idk how ill figure out what each rose is anyway. WHYYY wouldn't they label??

Kes, I agree! Ping Lim's roses from the Easy Elegance series are marketed as low-maintenance landscape shrubs, and it was a huge surprise for me that some of them are actually quite fragrant! This is not mentioned at all on the Easy Elegance website, they just keep going about how easy to grow they are. We're lucky in Canada, at least in Ontario they are still reasonably easy to find.

Magpie, I'm also not a fan of yellow, it's my partner who chooses most of our yellow, orange and red roses :) And yes, they are lovely, it's just not what I would choose myself :)

Yellow brick road looks nice. The only true yellow I grow here in Colorado is sparkle and Shine (from HCR.) It dies to the ground but so far, for three years, has come back to make a pretty nice small shrub. The flowers are really bright cheery yellow in my garden. If you're open to yellow, fade to pink, then Life of the Party is AMAZING here. Also died about 3/4 to the ground, but is already several feet tall and getting ready to burst into bloom. And the smell is to die for. I've tried Julia child twice and it's died over winter. This year I caved and bought a larger grafted one (I have almost all own root) from Home depot to try it one more time. I also have Sunny knockout, and its pretty nice, though the flowers fade quick. They smell really nice too and have been quite hardy for me. Hope you find what you are looking for!

Hazeldean is great and really hardy as is Persian Yellow. It was great having these in Alaska and not worrying about hardiness. Corn Hill and Hortico had great hardy choices along with High Country Roses.

Have you considered Harrison's Yellow? I haven't grown it but I know someone here has for years and has shared beautiful photos of it. I also suspect that it's the carefree yellow rose that came with my sister's very old house in and Northern Az (high desert). It's a once bloomer but known for being hardy and easy.

I'm not in your zone, but HCR has Lemon Zen that looks attractive and they say it's a z5 rose. I'd like to try that if I can figure out where to put it.

@librarian_gardner_8b_pnw and @joeywyomingzone4, I have definitely been considering Harison's Yellow. I'm just worried about it suckering all over and out of control. I don't have a wild space where I can let that happen. How hard is it to keep reasonably tamed? It can get big, just not take over a whole bed.

You're right, @Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) it does look like it suckers. My sister lives in a very low rainfall area and hers has not become a huge hedge but she may have a different old yellow. Joey would likely have better feedback about suckering.

I have some lovely yellow roses I would totally suggest.

First, Lichtkonigen Lucia is one of my favourites. A really hardy, frilly, happy girl.

Another one is Golden Fairytale.

And very fragrant, Mitsouko. She starts off yellow, and changes into a beautiful pink…which I find kind of symbolic.

@Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) Harison only suckers when he gets stressed. Mine is planted in pretty good soil, and gets enough water from the surrounding plants being watered, so he's very well behaved. It's pretty easy to just stick a shovel in between the main plant and the odd baby that comes up. The main plant experienced all kinds of neglect and mistreatment from animals eating it, not being watered for years at a time, etc, so over the years it has suckered pretty spectacularly. I know some people who grow HY as a hedge and it stays pretty tame, they just go along with a shovel and cut through the suckers once a year and pull them up.

Lemon Zen: I can't make an informed comment yet because it is still too new. I bought and planted this Rose last year in a spot that receives medium Sun/shade. Definitely not full sun. It had a lot of dieback in a warm winter of 8 degrees F. However, it is rebounding quickly and is growing to the top of the fence. No sign of blooms yet, but we will see here shortly. It may just need a sunnier spot or to reach a certain height before it blooms. I will be able to comment further next year after another winter as to whether or not it is suitable for zone 6. I bought this to be used as a climber but would be happy to keep it as a small Bush if it blooms a lot. A move may be in its future.

This just in! It looks like there's a bud! We're going to pull that came horizontal and see if we can get a few more.😉

When I went out into the garden, I saw another yellow: Dakota Sun. It was bred in 2005 and released by Sam Kedem's nursery. It is rated for zone 4b or warmer.

The Yellow Freedom Rose from Spring Hill is an awesome rose. Doesn't fade, cold hardy. Dakota Sun is a keeper too, but I think Kedem's is closed now, Sam retired. Gaye Hammond is outstanding, but does fade. Lemon Fizz is a good one too. The Poet's Wife - fades a little but otherwise good. I love yellow roses so I'm always looking for a good one! I see some here I need to try.

If you're interested, Roses Unlimited also listed Dakota Sun in the past. Don't know if they have it in stock right now, though.

I have Lemon Zen and have had it for several years. I don't know how hardy it is and my zone would not be a good test for that. It does seem to need more sun and shrug off heat better than some of my other roses. It didn't seem to be too happy in its original spot which received mostly morning sun. My Pembertons are happy there but not this one. This is the second season in its new spot where it gets sun most of the day and it's clearly happier. It's finally blooming more than just one lone bloom once in a while.

I have been a bad rose mommy to this rose plus it got heavily eaten by deer but made a great comeback. It will get an actual rose bed I promise. (Ps. the long grass is for my baby yard bunnies, who were born under my Cream Veranda)

Agnes is outstanding here, Magpie. It is one of the first to bloom and does rebloom. Great scent and heat tolerance. Mine are 8 feet tall. They do sucker which is fine with me. This is a gorgeous rose.

Sheila, I appreciate almost all sense in roses even those some may consider bad! I found Agnes' fragrance to be odd, but then was not surprised when I looked at its parentage R. faetida. However, this was in a greenhouse setting and I'm wondering what the scent is on a Inground plant. Fascinated me.

Vapor, I did not notice this with Agnes. I really could not smell lilacs here. I did not have Covid 19. I think it is my allergies, or the dry air here.
