From my spring orders, the most unusual: Errinerung an Brod (rambler) Inermis Morletii (rambler) Umbra (gallica hybridized by Paul Barden) Incantation (small shrub rose, also by Barden) Geschwind's Orden (shrub) Norland Rose (climber) Break o'Day (Brownell HT) Andrewsii (spinossisima) Alika (gallica) Prairie Flower (Buck) Sweet Fragrance (Grandiflora by Ping Lim) Omphale (gallica) Daphne' (gallica) Heinrich Karsch (polyantha) And for every one of these (plus the other seven I haven't listed because I see them talked about all the time) I must find a rose already in the garden to remove, pot up and give away. No expansion, that's my self-imposed new rule and that will make planting twice the work, I think! Oh well, a good number of these will be small bands that may not go in the ground yet this year. We'll see how they do in pots for a while. :-) Anne

Terracing can salvage lots of previously unusable space. I know. My yard is so multi-level that I have terraces all over the place. Kathy- I bought a packet of seeds last year, started them in some of those leftover nursery packs that had annuals in them. Planted them out when they got big enough. Broke each thingy into four and lined up all the plants. They grew and bloomed and NEVER stopped until a hard freeze. We had such a hot summer with record heat and they bloomed thru it all. I rarely watered them either. This spring I was pulling them up out of the daylilies there next to them and tossing them, I have plenty over there along that row.

Zone 5, the soil really needs to warm up for pennisetums to take off. You're actually borderline on the hardiness for Pennisetum Little Bunny. They may not survive a cold winter in zone 5. That aside, if they were planted a month ago at the end of April/beginning of May, the soil just wasn't warm enough yet for them to really establish and take off with new growth. Give them a chance now to see what happens during June. Other than that, if temps, light and water are good, then I usually look at soil issues next.
