Calling all fondant experts

I hope there's someone around tonight that can help.

So I'm attempting to make my first-ever fondant covered cake tomorrow for hubby's surprise 40th. He'll be out in the morning for a few hours, which will give just enough time to finish it (hopefully!).

I just finished making a marshmallow fondant. It turned out very nice. Smooth and doughy, and not too tough. I'm looking forward to rolling it out tomorrow.

Earlier today I made a batch of vanilla buttercream, but I'm not sure if there's enough of it to fill all the layers, coat the outside, and decorate it. I do not have time to make more.

Here are my questions...

Can I skimp a bit on the buttercream on the outside, or does the fondant need a generous layer to stick? Could I substitute a canned frosting?

Any other ideas for filling the layers? There are 5 layers altogether. So I could maybe do buttercream for two layers, but what between the other two?

Any tips that would reduce the risk of me ruining the cake would be appreciated!

I'm attempting to make the beer stein cake that Annie posted over in Conversations.
