OMG! This week's finds.

So I picked up some antique, 5 and 6 panel doors at the Community Forklift. The kind that have the horizontal panels, frequently used for kitchens or bathrooms. 1940s or 50s. Love 'em. Am looking into having a few stripped.

Then, I went around the corner to Habitat for Humanity. OMG. If anyone is looking for a kitchen, there are some BEAUTIFUL cabinets that look like this:

There are several 42" tall cabs, with 2, 42" glass cabs with glass on both sides! See thru cabs! There are gorgeous base cabinets and a bunch of nice 24"ers. There's a beautiful curved cabinet that would probably be on an end.

I don't know wood, but I want to say it's some kind of cherry. The grain is gorgeous.

Wow. If you're in the DC/MD/VA area, these are just beautiful. $500.00!!!! For all of them.

I am so jealous of your door score! It sounds like a wonderful place and I only wish we had one near us... sigh... We do have a Restore, but it is more than a half hour away, so I was not able to haunt it regularly. I did score some good stuff, but could have done better if I lived closer....

I don't know where you live, but 'round here 30-45 minutes' drive is nuttin'
My stores are 20 minutes minimum from me.
But I plan an hour's hike to Baltimore to check out what they've got there! :)

Fishers are bigger than skunks but smaller than otters. They have a similar long shape to that of otters, mink, and weasels, but they all move in a sort of hunched way, though the skunks are much slower than their slimmer relatives. Fishers tend to look sleeker in the winter and may look a bit ratty in the summer when they are shedding. They range from about 2 1/2 to 4 feet long, with minks being smaller, and weasels the smallest and otters the biggest. Out here in the boonies, we see all the members of this family at times, though none of them often. If your dog is with you, s/he should be fine as fishers don't really like being around people. I know cats are in danger from fishers, but not sure about small dogs.

I was typing up my response above when montana and sue responded, sorry! I do like the wood hoods but I do also like the stainless hoods. I also really like the mantle hoods. I have the same problem with granite ... I like almost every one I see. Too bad I'm not building several houses, haha ! The website for kitchensource is great. There are so many different style hoods to look at there. Thanks ! If I went with the Omega National hood (which looks just like the one that was option 3 above from the KD), what would you suggest for the looks of a custom topper ? I have played around with different ideas for that hood but have not come up with a very good one yet. According to the KD, that one has to attach to cabinets to the left and right, correct ? (we are using cherry) Got a phone call back from KD. We will save $800 by not having them provide any kind of hood, so that's money we can put towards other options if we do stainless or a different wood hood. He had an idea for the stainless hood and the problem with the duct from the ceiling not lining up with the hood's flue. His idea was to have a metal worker "box out" the top of the stainless hood to hide the pipe. I mocked it up in my 3D program and also the custom hood pictured in the original post (the hoods below may not be exactly to scale but this gives a good idea of it, and of course the wood hood would match the cabinets). AWM: You're so lucky that you have a high tolerance for messes; I'm just the opposite. But, it sounds like this will be less messy than I was expecting. Thank you! Funky: I took your advise and called our Anderson Windows design consultant and he told me basically the same thing, "Don't worry. We'll take care of anything you forget to do or can't handle." And, they do bring their own drop cloths. To my defense, I call the local company as soon as they opened this morning, and left a message with their secretary(?), but no one returned my call. Maddielee: that sounds good to me! And, thanks for the coffee and cookie idea. I'll do that. OP: I've been worried about dust and dirt, as I still remember the daily dust when our kitchen was being redone. I'm glad to hear that it will most likely be a lot easier! Debbie B: I'll try to take some After pics, although I'm not sure that there will be much difference in how they look overall. Carlsbad, eh? No offense to your brother, but that town needs to get some better hotels and restaurants. Still, the caverns are incredible. Thank you all so much for the info and for the reassurances that this will be easier than I'd anticipated! It sounds like the Anderson Window installers will pretty much take care of everything, and in a very professional but laid-back manner. I seriously feel so much better now.

A citrus world tour would be fun! I've seen photos of hundreds of different lemons they grow in Italy. And Australia has some cool looking citrus as well, not just finger limes. To be able to taste and see the worlds ways of culture would be wonderful. Laura, I know what you mean to be slimming down. Mine are so large it is getting hard to move them in and out of the greenhouse. So I am looking at replacing some of my larger ones with smaller plants. Basically starting over. I have a Clementine that will probably not be replaced, as I haven't gotten fruit on it for the last three years. Probably due to having to cut it back to put it in the greenhouse! But the fruit weren't that great to begin with, I wound up juicing all the fruit. I am sticking to lemons and limes, mostly. I've tried oranges in the past and they just didn't taste that good to me. Could have been the cultivar, but they tasted watery and bland. I have Ponderosa, Meyer, Variegated Eureka, and Lemonade Lemons, Key, Red, Finger, Kaffir, and a Thornless Key Lime, along with Calamondin, Buddha's Hand, Clementine and a Seedling Minneola. And I'm in the process of rooting a cutting of Lisbon Lemon. Oh and a Meiwa Kumquat. And six of those are LARGE! The rest are relatively young, so not huge yet. Lol. Way too many for my small greenhouse!

our store is about an hr from me - that's a long haul 1 way for me... and my old car. I'd hate to break down or get a flat so far from home. my doc is about that far from me also and I always hate going to see him for that reason (I like the doc!).

yep, this getting great goods used and cheap is addictive! I just love it. Mine's mostly been limited to a GW about 30 min away from me.

I'm hoping to get up the courage to go to the restore sometime soon.

Christine!! I've missed you! I was thinking about you because we have these really pretty victorian doors in our barn.....TALL, complete with doorbell, but the original glass is gone.

Glad to hear you are just out finding ALL the good stuff.... I think you should organize a GWK expedition!!

I'm noticing most people are giving away the really short, 30" vanities. So they have them in many shapes, colors and sizes. I also noticed this week an over the toilet cabinet thing.

Just look up Community Forklift.com. It's on the MD side heading in towards Bladensburg. I know, I'd never go there at night, either. [LOL]

remodelfla, who told you! If I melt the string, it hardens when it cools. I can then at least use it as a base for caulking all the mis-cuts I make on the saw!!!

Oh, Nancy! How beautiful. You can't use them? How tall is "really tall"? Normal doors these days are 80".

Ok guys. I now have about 12, solid maple, 6-panel, unfinished, exterior (thicker) doors available for trade. OMG! They're not drilled for door hardware, but that's not a biggie -- if I can do it! I'd trade them for what I paid for the reuse, antique doors.

I only paid $55 for 36", $40 for the 32", $35 for the 30" and 30 for the 28". Anyone need new, modern, beautiful doors? Only kind of kidding. I hate to donate these babies when they cost $120-150 a piece!

This has got to be my one real splurge. To trade out doors I already own? Materials bought before our fire? HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA I've lost my MIIIIIIIIIInd!

Desertsteph, plan a doctor's visit and a reuse visit on the same day. That way if you don't show up, the doctor's office will know to send out a wrecker or the blood hounds.

I'm going back today to pick up pavers I bought last week. They exactly match the ones I've had stacked in my driveway for 5 years that someday I'll build a patio out of! Yeah! A palate for $60? I'm on it.

Expedition, yes!! I have this silly image in my head: one of those golf cart-like tour trolleys with Christine sitting up at the front with a crackly microphone, facing all the passengers: "On our left we have a real find..."

You guys would have to balance on the tines of the fork lift.
But I admit, I'd be so excited *I* would be crackling.

I would be sad if no one found it as fun and fascinating as I do.

I'm meeting someone from here at the 'Fork today, actually. I haven't heard from her, so if she shows, it'll be FUN!

Then? In the week? I'm going up to Baltimore to the 2nd Chance. I just can't stand it and have to see what they're keeping from me.

The doors are at least 86"tall, and really pretty. They are dark, old paint or stain, I don't know. I need a 2'2" x 6'8" door since my GC cut the hole in the wall, and THEN couldn't find a stock door to fit!!

Sign me up for tthe tour, please!

Nancy, I'm confused.
What's a 2'2' door? Is that a 26" wide door?
The 6'8" is 80", which is standard.
Framing out that door should allow him to bring it to 24" wide.

OTOH, come on over to the (dark side) reuse centers. I'm finding doors in the weirdest sizes! I just installed a 33" French door as a pocket door for my den.

I think he needs to look harder or use more creativity!

Yes. (Nancy actually wrote 2'2".) For reasons that make no sense to me, windows and doors are often quoted in feet+inches. I much prefer to just use inches, but, hey, that is me.

I figured out my confusion.
We're saying feet (2'2') not inches (2'2"). I definitely read 2'2'!! That's be an odd door to say the least.

Any chance of the GC making the door taller?
I'd hate to see beautiful doors like that go to waste.
The wood alone must be gorgeous!

I'm thinking of cutting open some pocket doors to raise the headers to use some beautiful doors from CF. Just a thought.

Christine, yep, 26 inches. It is an exterior door in a little bumpout on the front porch.....my brilliant idea to have a way to let myself and the dogs in without going through the front door. I turned this bedroom into my laundry/ mud/ dog and cat room. I can have one custom made, for way off the budget, but I would rather find an old one!

These old doors from my barn are a pair of entry doors, probably 72 inches for the pair, and they weigh about 200 lbs each. I will try to get a picture for you!

Clueless, those are some fantastic stoves!! I love old......

I think your idea for the bedroom, though, is brilliant. Do I remember you debating over a mud-type room vs. formal dining room. Was that you?

I wish I were close. Would love to see your barn. I know mine's full of crap, but one man's crap is another man's daily duty. Or something like that.
