Grammahony's grandson on Hospice

I just got an IM from Leslie ( Grammahony ). She told me they put Nate, her 17 year old grandson on Hospice because he's having problems breathing, and they put him on morphine to keep him sedated so he doesn't get anxious because he can't breath. This has been going on about a week. His parents were wrestling with the idea of going on Hospice. It was to much for them to watch him struggling so they went ahead and did it. Leslie is going over to where he is in a couple of hours. She's babysitting another grandson right now and can't go immediately. Monica and Jeff , Nate's parents, said no visitors except Grandparents right now.

He can't talk, walk, eat anything but liquids. He wanted to go to prom which is on the 27th, but Jeff said he probably won't last that long, and with him being on morphine he won't be awake either. They're keeping him sedated 24/7 for his breathing. He has been such a brave young man with an awesome outlook and a strong will to fight this dreaded disease.

Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they face this.

I will continue to pray for Leslie, her grandson and his family. Just thinking of what they're going through makes my heart hurt. I wish I could do something to ease their pain but I know from personal experienc that we can only ask for courage and strength to face whatever comes. ((Leslie))

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts and prayers. Mom is failing faster than was projected. We are probably looking at a weeks at most...unless she breaks out of this pattern of decline. The nurse comes this morning, so we will know more then. The terminal agitation is ramping up. Several grandchildren were in this weekend. She went from actually having a good conversation with one on Thursday to blank stares at the ceiling and incoherent speech on Friday. The oldest and most faithful grandson flew in from Boston to experience Friday only to come Saturday morning, and after she got oriented, he was blessed with a real conversation with her. They said their "I love yous". By Sunday when we returned from church early afternoon, we saw the the huge decline. Two more grandkids came and had to say their tearful goodbyes without Mom being very aware. A married grandson and his wife, from 5 hours away, saw her Sunday morning and my brother thinks mom knew they were there. Systems are starting to shut down more, but we are still feeling blessed to be able to have her here to care for. I'm so sorry. Give that baby all the love & warmth in your heart. I sort of know what you mean about grieving for him even as you look at his little face; when my Aunt Lillie was in the hospital at the end of her life, I knew she was gone from me, even though she was still "there". It must be much more intense when it's a little baby. You might post on the Caregivers Forum; it's for people who are caring for chronically or terminally ill or disabled loved ones, & there are a lot of warm, caring people over there who can help you with your day-to-day life as well as the "big picture" issues. sending you & the baby thoughts for strength, love, protection, & peace.

Jan 21 2015 i lost dad to stage 4 small cell carcinoma on March 10,2015 I lost Mom to stage 4 B cell lymphoma! In my fathers case We were told, 6 to 8 weeks, he only lived 7 days from the date of his diagnosis! Mom wasn't given a diagnosis, she lived only had 6 weeks from the day my dad died! My mother was admitted to the hospital the day my dad passed. Thanks be to God she was able to be there,in a chair by his bedside the entire time. Sad part, she was in horrible pain and she never complained not once! They (Dr's) thought she had cellulitious of the calf, boy were they wrong! We never saw any of this coming! My mom and dad were my everything! I'm 35! I know to some that seems old enough right, wrong. I just became interested in the subjects that they were found of, I have so many questions, I had so much more to learn! My birthday is less then a month, no special phone call or card this time! My entire world shattered in 6 weeks! Ironic thing is, a dream I had 5 years ago! Myself, my 2 sisters, our mother and a husky man with no face were all at a funeral! At first I didn't know whos funeral we were at. I thought in a panic like feeling to myself ,is this dads funeral, looking around I saw no casket,I saw no pictures and I immediately called down. I thought is this Moms funeral, confused now I was looking around for a clue to whoms funeral i was attending. It was then I noticed my Mother limping in the archway with her cain in a blue dress! The colors around me were extremely vibrant, blue, white and purple flowers everywhere, there was an archway filled with vines that were just about in season to bloom. Noone else was attending this funeral but us four and the man i could identify. StillI didn't know who's funeral I was at. Suddenly I felt a terrifying feeling, I slowly looked behind me and my 3rd sister stood behind me. Her arms were draped in front of herself folded just so nicely, she had a sober, still and expressionless face. She was dressed in a classy, fitted black suit. The jacket looked as if she was the only person in the world it could have been tailored for. She was radiant, her hair was gold blonde more beautiful then I had ever seen in actuality! I felt a immediate sense she had been watching over us! As I sat there, my other older sister, the second youngest to myself, was overcome by despaire and overcome by grief. She just sat and shook violently, as if she were sick from her nerves inside and out.I looked down and saw her fancy stocking socks, black Rib knit cuff over the knee socks, and her white sweater.Why they left a impression I would understand at the time. My eldest sister stood talking to the man, I couldn't see his face. They stood at the front left had corner of the room, while mom walked toward them. I had that dream three times that night! Just 6 months after that dream, my sister died from cancer and was cremated.I never got to say good by to her, I was unable to get to her funeral! On January 21st 2015 it snowed a lot. On the 30th of Jan,the day we burried our dad, the temp was -2 degrees, my sister was shaking,sitting next to me she leaned over and I saw her knitted rib cuff socks! On March 10 th 2015 my mother passed, my sister was wearing the white sweater . On March 18th 2015 it was 72 degrees, my mother was burried in a blue dress! My eldest sister talked to my uncle that day in the front left hand corner of the room! My mother never quite made it all the way to them, just like in my dream! I guess I could say I had a dream, but it's one I can not awken from! My mom and dad are both gone! I know they are with the Lord and for that I am greatful! I am just lost without them!

Thank you everybody. This really brightened my day. It was a long one. Mom and I spent most of it (9:30-5:15) at the hospital. DSis has had a fever ever since surgery. Today it went to 104Â°. They put her on a cooling mat, and it did come down to 102Â°, last I knew of. She's still on the ventilator, and sedated. They keep her sedated until they can take the vent out. They did a broncscopsy (sp) and a CAT scan today. Everything looks good. They'll be growning cultures from the broncscopsy, and that could take 4 days. Then Mom and I went out to Olive Garden for dinner. We each had 2 glasses of wine. I don't think we even ate 1/2 our meal, after the salad and bread sticks. I always do that. Well, next year I get medicare. My sister just went on it 2 days before she had surgery. Bless her heart. Leslie

I am so sorry but I am glad they called Hospice...It's such a good thing. I have already talked to my husband about calling Hospice when it's that time. Sending prayers for the family...It's so hard.

When my Dad was sick with liver disease, he got Hospice care. They were wonderful, providing counselling to him and Mom, they were fantastic. One night he complained of a headache and they rushed over with aspirins.They helped him remain in his own home. When his last day came,they hooked up Morphine and let him pass peacefully. I decided then, it's the way I want to go. Again, my prayers are with Nate and his family.

My youngest son is a senior, and life is consumed with talk of prom right now. Hearing that Nate just wanted to attend prom...well...it brings me to tears that he cannot.
