Retractable Downdrafts for Island Cooktops?
Comments (12)Thanks for all the good feedback. I did speak directly to Thermador and they verified that the finish on their retractable vent system will match the frame on the cooktop. I decided to go with the 14" tall vent instead of the 10". It will do a better job covering my tall pots and it has a few additional features. Both of Thermador's vents use a screw drive system versus a cable pull. I did get a hands on look at their 36" model on display. The mechanism that pulls the vent up and down seems a little noisy but within reason. Vent noise on low setting was pretty quiet. Medium seemed to match the noise level of my current GE downdraft and the High setting was definitely LOUD. I noticed they had a 36" Bosch vent on display right next to the Thermador. It was actually a little quieter in its drive mechanism pulling the vent up and down, but I will stick with the Thermador to ensure proper compatibility with the cooktop....See Morecan a cooktop fit in a standard depth counter?
Comments (10)Probably will fit, but a lot depends on the specifics of your installation. When planning, be sure to think about the interior size of your base cabinet. A 36â x 24â base, made with 3/4 material would have a 34.5â x 22.5â interior. Only a little larger if 1/2â material is used. My 36â cooktop specified a cutout of 34-3/8â wide. My cabinet boxes are being made with 3/4â material. I noticed how impossible that would have been in a standard 36â base, and ordered the cooktop cabinet 38â wide (36.5â interior). As long as your cabinet has enough width, rather than centering the cutout front to back on the cabinet, consider how far from the leading edge you can place the cutout comfortably, and push it back a bit. Don't forget the backsplash takes up space as well. According to the MIA* the cooktop, sink, and any other large cutouts should be rodded by the granite fabricator. I would hope that would help prevent those narrow areas from cracking. I've linked to the MIA publication on fabrication standards. About 10 or 11 pages in, there are illustrations showlng where rodding should be placed. (*The MIA, Marble Institue of America, is considered to be the standard in professional stone fabrication.) Comments (29)Arezab, I would love to hear your opinion of your new range once you've had a chance to use it. I have been very pleased with my electric Jenn Air downdraft range (original to house, so appx 20 years old), and planned to replace it with a dual fuel model. (Gas lines already exist.) Downdraft on my electric cooktop has done a terrific job - no complaints at all. However, I am concerned about the impact of the downdraft on the gas burners - simple physics indicate at least some impact on flame, whereas that was a non-issue with the electric burners. I am also curious to know if you feel the quality is still as good. Many have reported since Whirlpool purchased the Jenn Air brand, it is just not the same product. Good luck with your remodel. Hope to hear your opinions, once your new range is up and running!...See MoreIs a downdraft fan more satisfactory with an induction v gas cooktop?
Comments (2)Effective venting has more to do with your cooking than the fuel you use. Regardless of the fuel, you will have odors, grease, smoke, steam, etc....See Morejjohio27
