You did the very right thing!.....sometimes when young birds are touched, the parent will not except it any more.

Here is the bird the way I wanted to post it, hope it works. After looking at some other photos which were much larger, it dawned on me that you don't have to upload your photos if you have somewhere to host them, which I do.

Good shots. The last one is better. I have that problem when I resize and some are so small I can hardly see what they are. Compared to the way they were originally.

Doris, Eric, isn't that hair funny? I don't know what you call it. Thanks much for the nice compliments; I think I have a handle on the picture posting.

I will try to post photos from time to time, but if you expect folks to look at yours, you should take the time to look at more of theirs, and I'm so busy doing post processing and so many other things, it's hard to take the time.

I hang out a lot on dpreview and once in awhile post and look at photos on a family values type group on usenet, alt.binaries.photos.original.

All my life I have had cameras, set them on auto and shot that way. Once I got on the internet and started reading up, I learned so many new things I wish I had known back in the days of film. Better late than never. I consider myself a lightweight compared to some of the marvelous photos I've seen others post, but I'm doing fine where I am. Have had offers for paid shoots, but am certainly not ready for anything like that except as backup.

Once it starts being work, it isn't as much fun any more :-(. I LOVE the freedom and creativity of shooting what I want, when I want, and how I want.

And I do screw up shots now and then, am still learning, will always be learning!

And I am not posting any more dinky photos because they just don't cut it. I can understand why the site has to restrict the size, but it ruins the whole picture to size it down so much.

I do like it when people post shots from certain places and themes I can't. Especially quaint shots from New England and a few other special places to me.

Alice(insocial - my real name is Alice), do you mean Steve's Digicams? I gave up on them. If you mean something else, please let me know. I have won on a couple of photos, but that is not my main motivation, it kind of was for awhile when so many were getting kudos on POTD's. I never think about it any more when I am taking a photo. I will get an 8X10 for my album next batch.

My sister thinks I should offer some to magazines. I don't know. I really have more fun sharing on the net.

Konrad, thanks ever so much. I knew I had a good one when I finally came to this one, and in the original the colors are flatter so I did a number on it in Photoshop. It took 8 shots and this was the eighth. I bumped up the ISO to 800 and that was what did it. Some would consider the DOF a little shallow.

I love my little bird, I guess that's all that matters now :-).

I will try to share my rainbow barn tomorrow. I've got to go out and see if I can put up some brackets to hold a window box I just bought and planted. It says the brackets hold 36 pounds; I think with water in the soil it is more. I'll try to find an extra bracket at the hardware store, bought the last two Lowe's had.

Hey, I like that caption! Maybe I will do it just because you suggested it. They usually want them out of the camera, and I shoot RAW now (.CR2). Won't worry about it tonight and will read their latest rules.

Ho, my planter. I didn't want to drag out the extension cord and my drill, so I tried to drill the holes with hand screw starter. Promptly lost one of the screws to the brackets and couldn't find it. Came in the house and found a longer set that would work, but my screwdriver is getting stripped. Then I decided the holes weren't deep enough, so I came in the house to find a drill bit and electric drill, and ran my 2 cords out the window. Together they weren't long enough.

So I went to the hardware store for the third time this week and got a THIRD section to extend my extension cord, some new phillips screwdrivers, a set of screws (for ONE screw) I lost trying to clean my light fixture glass whatever they are to replace the lost one. I went higher on the ladder than I usually do. Loosened all the thumb screws and couldn't get the shades, that's what they are, or whatever off. I have no clue why, even took out the light bulb. Looked and looked for the screw on my hands and knees and cannot find it. When I vacuum, I will. I'm exhausted.

I think I am majored screwed up today. I don't know why I had such a run of bad luck. I also stumbled and spilled out all the plants I got half price I was going to put in the window box, had to gather them up and put them back in their pots and trays. I finally got them in the planter, but they look sloppy and I like to do them right. Maybe they will fill out.

If I wait for some guy to come and help me, it will never get done. I am NOT handy with tools. Sorry to dump on you.

I haven't been able to take many photos lately which is less stressful. This summer I have to have a lot of repairs made and will not be able to get them all. It is really making me a nervous wreck trying to keep so many things going.

I did what you suggested and used your title. Thank you for that. They have changed the rules making it much better now. You used to have to send the original out-of-the-camera version but could do some minor adjustments, but then they cropped them and you had no control over the final output, especially with sharpening which is critical.

Now you can crop your own photos (they want a minimum of 640X480), still make minor adjustments, so I just sent the same one I posted here because it is 800X600. You can still send very large files, and they will resize/crop, etc.

My DSLR camera does not do much in-camera sharpening (the Nikons and others are a little better in that regard), but Canon uses a different filter in front of the sensor which does better noise reduction, but also makes your photos a little softer so you have to use USM in Photogshop if you want it to look right. If you sharpen a huge photo and it is later downsized, that is not such a good thing, so I was happy to see that they now allow more leeway with submissions.

Well, it may come to nothing--I think they are flooded with entries--but I'm glad you did it anyway.
They have never accepted mine, either. But it's kinda a challenge to me. Maybe I'll post the last one of mine that they didn't choose.

Please do post it starting a new thread, people won't find it on this now old thread. Maybe you should keep trying; I tend to give up too soon.

I would like to see your photo(s). Go for it! I do have a lot of nice photos, but they are the choice ones out of hundreds of pictures I have taken now since Jan 2003. I am finding that to get the best possible shot, I have to take several if there is time, watching my histogram and settings.
