Keeping pie layers separate

I found a Kraft Recipes pumpkin pie recipe that I want to try. It has a bottom cream cheese layer and a pumpkin layer on top. A few of the comments about the recipe mention that the pumpkin layer sinks into the cream cheese layer.

I'm wondering whether there is something I could do to prevent that. For example, is there some sort of layer of sugar or something else I could add before the pumpkin that would keep the layers separate? I was thinking of spun sugar, but maybe there is an easier technique?
