Diaharea in 10 year old female

The vet told us our 10 year old sheppard needed to lose weight both to lose weight and to relieve the ear problem she's suffered from for years (fungus or brown discharge, her ear hurts to be cleaned). We've tried a couple recipes from the BalanceIt site but Misty wouldn't eat it (she is table-fed-spoiled). Then we got dry/can food from the vet and gave only that but after a week she developed diaharea with some blood in it. Then the vet gave a recipe of beef/oatmeal/2 green veggies and she's still suffering from diaharea. Mom switches to just meat to calm the diaharea but Misty still has it for a day or two after the change. Misty also seems to strain but not go much, which makes me wonder if she's got cramps or if that's normal for diaharea (I assumed it was just lots of loose stool, not lots of straining with little water).

The vet has suggested Mom give Misty Kaopeptate but I'd like to hear from people here regarding the situation. Is this still a result of sudden switching? Should mom go back to her old table fed ways and switch slowly from that to a new diet? Is it possibly the cabbage in the meal (50% meat, 25% oatmeal, 25% of 2 green veggies). Misty's ear is so painful Mom can't clean it. Any ideas of how we should proceed?

Table fed - can be good or it can be bad, depending upon what's coming off the table.

I would probably give Misty a couple tablespoons of canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just pumpkin) it can help with diarrhea and calms the digestive tract.

Did your vet give Misty some ear drops? I couple drops of the magic yellow stuff (what is that?) rubbed in twice a day, until it gets to a point where its comfortable enough to clean...

Other things, straining? Assuming they've checked her anal glands?

Blood, parasites?

I'd probably not feed cabbage as a green vegetable, I would do beans and broccoli - something more firm, more fiber, less gassy... cabbage kills my gut too.

IMO, she's gone thru a lot of diet changes and that can cause digestive upset, but I'd be concerned since she's had the diarrhea for so long.

I'd have the vet check the ear again if its that painful since your description sounds like Misty needs more than an ear cleaning. A badly infected ear would be enough to cause her to be ill.

Did the vet say to add cabbage? Some dogs can have digestive problems with cabbage so I'd eliminate it from her diet and add green snap beans instead. You may also try adding a small amount of pumpkin to help calm her stomach.

My son has ADHD, and is very active. He has trouble sleeping,which surprises me, since he plays so hard all day long. I tried the bed alarm,but he wasn't allowing it to work. Every time he used it, he wet it about 10-15 minutes after he went to bed(yes he went to the bathroom right before bed). It was almost as if he was forcing pee to come out so he could hear the alarm go off. The problem is, once the pad is wet, you have to wait till it's dry again to use it again. He's still wearing pull-ups, and wets almost every night. Tonight, only 5 minutes after he went to bed, he let out a little yell, and when I went to go see what the matter was, he said his sister turned his light on(not the case). I looked at his bed, and it was soaked with urine, and he had a pull-up on, plus he had his Nintendo DSI open in the middle of the bed!He has snuck the DSI into his bed many times, and he loses it for a day, but, tonight I told him he lost his DSI for a week! I was furious, because I knew he peed intentionally, and his pull-op obviously wasn't fully covering him. I don't know what else to do. He has to "want" to quit pee-ing the bed, I can't force him to quit. Does anyone have any advice?

I also have a 10 month old Havanese puppy. These are sometimes referred to as "velcro" dogs, as their attachment and bond with their human is very strong. They want to be with you constantly and will follow you from room to room, even into the bathroom! They also tend to get stressed out if left alone for extended periods so if you work all day and the dog will be left alone, this is probably not the best breed for you. They can become destructive and psychologically impaired if left alone much. Havanese are also highly intelligent and easy to train. They don't require a lot of exercise but appreciate a good daily romp outside as well as regular walks. And they LOVE toys....of all sorts. Stuffed toys with squeakies, balls, chew toys, tug ropes. And they like them best if YOU play with them with the toy - keep-away, fetch, tug of war. These are wonderful, playful and very affectionate little dogs that want nothing more than to be with their human all the time!! 😊

I just loved the box car chilren when i was a kid. i know you asked for series, but Holes and how to eat fried worms are both great books to read. if she likes a mystery, 'The Cat who....' books might not be too far beyond her reach. I read the original Tarzan books at that age and was captivated. as well as nacy drew and the hardy boys. also the series about budding astronauts "Tom ???" after that i slid into Narnia, and then the lord of the rings. Horatio Hornblower would be great, (but O'brian's Master and Commander series was a heavy, but wonderful read for me this past year) I also remember a series about a boy named henry, he as always in trouble(or was it a Homer?) diggerb

Parker,I have been thinking of the same thing too--about the cold, particularly about the damage that was caused to it in 2010. I think the fertility of the tree might have been greatly compromised because otherwise the foliage growth seems to be prolific. In fact, I have had to trim off the branches every year up to 3 ft from their tips. Trying to keep it from growing taller and broader was a chore .. lol. Right now, it stands at least at 16 ft if not 18 ft. This all happened after the tree died down to 1/3 of its original size. Before the freeze, it was about 6-7 ft tall. I think something weird must have happened that made this tree to behave in a way that is most unpredictable. My other lychee trees although are slow in catching up, they do eventually put up a show of a full crown blooms. This year, I'm so happy to see my Hap Ip and Sweet Heart in full blooms. I'm thankful that my Brewster regularly fruits, although it seems to be showing a year of heavy alternate with a year of light bloom. This year, it's going on a light bloom mode. Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all will go well as I also have to keep down the web worm infestation. So far, the BT we're spraying seems to be working. It's not a chemical, but a kind of a bacterium culture that the larvae from the web worm feed on. It makes them sick so they'll stop eating the young floral parts. They have been eating my Sweetheart every year until we found this wonderful spray. We're also spraying it on our mangoes as they also attack them. If you keep some lychees in your yard, it would be nice if you share pix of some of your plants.

If the dog has fungus in the ear they should have given you something to clean it with. We use Maleseb, but there are other medications as well. The meds need to be applied everyday and the ears need to be cleaned everyday. Bulldogs also get the ear fungus and the best thing to do is use the meds consistently otherwise the fungus comes back and irritates the fur babies.

Having recently experienced some of those symptoms with our female shepherd, I'm extra-sensitive when anyone says they have a shepherd with diarrhea that won't clear up. That's a hallmark sign of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). Although any breed (even mixed breeds) can get it, at least 50% of the dogs that get it are German Shepherds (or closely related breeds like Shiloh Shepherds). EPI symptoms are listed on the attached link. You might want to see if they sound familiar. If so, you'll want to ask your vet for the cTLI test, since normal blood tests can't detect EPI.

The ear trouble isn't necessarily indicative of EPI, although some EPI dogs seem prone to yeast infections in their ears.
