I took this picture last week. The lily is much more beautiful now. I will try to get another picture tomorrow.

After what I thought was compulsive checking for lily bugs (and squishing them), I just discovered 3 lilies whose lower foliage is being devoured by the larvae. YUCK!! I hand picked off what I could (double YUCK) and sprayed the area with neem oil. I hate these bugs!

I have lilies a couple of feet high now, and no lily leaf beetles! For the last few years I've only seen a few beetles each year, if any, (and I quickly kill them if I see them). I don't spray until I see them and then I only spray the beetle itself with something like permethrin or Bayer's Advanced - whatever is closest. It's probably due to the parasitic wasps. The beetles and their larvae only eat stems and foliage - the bulbs are unaffected. So no need to dig up and clean or move :-) And the lilies should come back just fine next season. If the beetles are present in your area, there is not much you can do to deter them. Other than avoid planting lilies :-) Hand picking is the most effective if laborious solution. And there are some insecticides you can use but most will be broad spectrum and affect other, more beneficial insects as well. Neem oil is pretty benign and together with hand picking can reduce larvae as well as deter adult predation.

Outside, the golden crocosmia are much better behaved than the more common orange ones. The two varieties I have are not bright yellow, but more the color of the one I posted. One has grayish foliage, the other is green. They are very slow spreaders, in my experience. I find Lucifer to be well behaved, as well. I suggested it because the sites I looked at said it was hardy to z5, but Nicole's site says only hardy to z7. I don't know how altitude affects the zones. But I think the suggestion of a chartreuse foliage plant is great, too.

That lily is absolutely beautiful! Do you know the name of it? I have a dark amber one but it is not as clear and rich a color as yours. In New England, mine aren't growing yet. Thanks for sharing that one. Makes me wish Spring would hurry along sooner here.

Very pretty red lily. I planted some last year and they grew almost five feet tall. They were huge.

Thanks everyone, and at the same time, I'm sorry that I can't help with a name. I dug these from an old homestead where my brother lives. The house has been gone since the late 40's or early 50's. I also got several tea(?) roses and many other unidentified plants from there, and even some other lilies, which haven't bloomed yet.

I really like these and they seem to really like it here. The scarey thing is, is that I was not going to take them, as they were just bulbs when I found them. I accidentally came across them as I was digging up some other plants, and decided to see what they turned out to be...what a surprise, and of course, very glad that I kept them.
