alternative to Fancy Feast

Due to the recent expansion of the pet food recall, I'm looking for a canned food with no wheat gluten that my fussy cat will eat. She only likes the Fancy Feast with gravy flavors. They all have wheat gluten. I believe it is the wheat gluten that makes the "gravy". Sometimes she only licks off the gravy and leaves the meat morsels.

I've tried more expensive brands and she won't eat them. (Which is funny because for dry food, she mostly eats Evo, which is the most expensive I've seen.) Does anyone with fussy cats have a recommendation? Hopefully for a gravy food?

Margaret, I have the exact same situation. Just this morning I separated all the FF that has wheat gluten and am going to throw it out. I am checking every label of everything that goes into my dogs and cats. So far my dog food is okay...dry lamb and rice Nutro Natural Choice. I am going to try another brand, but not sure which yet. I have 24 cans of FF that do not have wheat gluten.

I'm doing the same. My cats will only eat Fancy Feast as their wet food (I split a can between the two of them each morning). I just checked my remaining stock, luckily only 4. Two had wheat gluten and two did not. They seem to like all types of Fancy Feast, so I'll go stock up on non-wheat gluten types tomorrow and dump the wheat gluten stuff. My cats also like cat treats and I'm guility of giving them too many at times. I had four big packs of cat treats and all contained wheat gluten as a primary ingredient. BTW I posted in another post that my cat Basil has just been diagnosed with hyperthyroid. He has been losing weight and doesn't look well. I really hope this is indeed hyperthyroid and not from the food. . . The coincidence of both things occurring at the same time is unsettling.

You have one really great setup for rearing them! When you bury water bottles do you just put large stems of milkweed in bottles? That along with putting homemade cage over entire setup seems to be great way to rear a number of them even when not on vacation. If one has as many in different stages as you've got you'd have to make a few cages to separate them as you already have. I'm not flush with Monarch cats so don't think I'd need as many cages. I found one yesterday and brought it inside but saw another today on same plant. Was running around all day so didn't bring it in but your setup could work for raising more cats of like stages in outdoor setting. This sparked my interest because I had to stay at my father's to raise a few BSTs since that's where the butterfly garden is. Cleaning couple times a day, feeding and sheltering from direct sun/rain kept me tied down but a setup like yours would allow me to raise them and get home more often like a "normal" person...all relative, of course! Thanks for what I think is great alternative rearing arrangement. Don't think my milkweed is as healthy as yours. I've got 3 incarnata milkweed and bottom leaves keep yellowing and falling off. 3 Tuberosa milkweed are new and kind of small but would do in a pinch if I run out of incarnata which is where I found 2 cats so far. I've fed and keep watered the incarnata but leaves still yellow and drop. First year growing anything as well as trying to rear these little guys so not very astute about identifying and correcting plant problems.

Livvysmom is correct about questioning the inclusion of sweet potatoes etc in cat food. Cats CANNOT digest ANY plant materials, period. Therefore all you are doing by giving a cat food with plant products is wasting your money, and not helping your cat. To those who want to know, The definition for meat by-products by the Association of American Feed Control Officials is: The non-rendered, clean parts, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. It does not include hair, horns, teeth and hoofs. It shall be suitable for use in animal food. If it bears name descriptive of its kind, it must correspond thereto. Carnivores, including cats, eat WHOLE prey, which of course includes lungs, liver, spleen, blood, bone, fat, stomach, and intestines. There is no good reason in the world to exclude these HEALTHY and NATURAL parts of animals in pet food. Now that is not to say that any particular company lies about what a meat by-product is. And pets with food allergies should not get foods with meat by-products listed as an ingredient because the food could contain a protein source that the animal is allergic to. But there isn't a reason in the world why a healthy cat can't or shouldn't consume by-products. In fact, they SHOULD eat these items because that is how cats evolved- eating WHOLE prey. The bones and brain contain the most taurine, an essential amino acid which can cause blindness and heart disease if not included in the diet. IMHO, any food such as FF that does NOT have items such as sweet potatoes and whatever IS a step up from any food that does contain those items. I'm not saying FF is the best cat food out there- frankly if I had a cat I would feed it WYSONG as I do my dogs when they are not getting homemade food. But I think that FF and similar all-meat diets are better for cats in particular than any food containing waste products such as sweet potatoes and carrots that cats cannot use at all. Only if they do not also include artificial preservatives and flavorings. I don't like guar gum in pet food either. But better a little guar gum than a bunch of veggies and fruit in cat food.

Gabby, my now deceased Siamese cat, ate nothing BUT Fancy Feast. She particualy liked the Mixed Grill variety. For a special treat, I would give her a jar of Gerbers Baby Food every week or so. Veal, Beef, Turkey, Chicken, she loved them all. She could be outside 50 yards away and still hear that "special pop" of me opening one of the jars. She would always come running for that sound. She has been dead for 11 years now, and still can't bring myself to own another cat. I took in my niece's cat when my niece died, and after her cat Tyson's demise, I let my daughter get a cat which we still have. It's just not the same and never will be. I will never own and bond with another feline. I am on a morbid roll tonight. Too many "dead memories" are invading my already fragile mind. No where to dump, no one to talk to about it. So, I am "unloading" on anyone brave evough to have actually read this far. Sorry!!!!!

I don,t know if the classic pate has changed but I know tthe grilled fancy feast liver and chicken canned cat food has definitely changed. Color is different and it smells different and my cat wont eat it any more.. At first I thought I might have gotten a batch that was mislabeled but I have tried two other batches from different stores and they are the same. My cat says Yuk, and so do I. Think I am gonna switch to another brand for a while. I did try some flavors of Weruva cat food. Its more expensive but has quality ingredients. Lots of flavors and varieties. My cat doesn,t like all of them but I did find a few that she will eat and I am happy to pay a little more if the ingredients are quality and she likes it.

Margaret -and all - the EVO brand by Natura also has canned foods. A "gravy food" might be hard to find without gluten. I have one boy who goes on a rampage if he doesn't get his grilled fancy feast (a cuts 'n' gravy food). So far it has been safe, FF (Purina) maintains that their foods have not been contaminated (EXCEPT Mighty Dog 3.5 oz packaged dog food.) Regardless, we are not allowing it any more as of yesterday.
We will mix a little water with the non-gluten-containing foods (tender beef feast, gourmet chicken feast, tender beef and liver feast, and tender beef and chicken feast varieties of Fancy Feast) to make it gravy-like.
I do want to move to a raw-food diet with my fur-kids, but until then, and in the transition, FF non-gluten varieties will have to do.

I just switched my Emma to a product called Blue Buffalo (pricey). She is very picky but she loved it (ha!- you might know!) For awhile I will give this to her. I usually give her Purina Pro loaf (I think they call it) for her wet food and add water. No "gravied" wet food for her. It troubles me that at Petsmart yesterday, they had all the Purina Pro at half off.... I wonder .....
Don't know what to do about her dry food.
