I'm not really understanding how the pillows would solve the problem.

Maybe instead of pillows to make it more sit-able, use a small ottoman or a pouf for your feet?

The pillow will go at one's back, resulting in the seat being less deep. I'm using "deep" to mean from the front of the sofa to the back cushion.

Here are some pics. I like the very small fringe on some of these, which would look nice with your fabric...and especially like the ones that have two different types of pillows, one plain or coordinating stripe, one stronger pattern like yours (unless you plan on doing just 3 big pillows). One concern I have it how slippery leather is and if the pillows aren't going to need continual adjustment; will they slide around when you try to sit on the sofa? Just a thought.

I think you are right about the constant re-adjustment. I'm in the position of trying to make something I really really dislike work. DH was dead set to have a leather sofa ("they last forever" - which I think is an excellent reason NOT to have one). This sofa was the least offensive leather sofa I could find. I sat on it at the furniture store and thought it was comfortable. But living with it is different.

I paid too much for it just to toss it. I would gladly give it to one of our children for use in their homes, but they don't want it either!

...and, yes, I would like some cheese with my whine ;-)

Just to throw some ideas out...Could you get a long lumbar cushion made out of the same or a coordinating leather? Or maybe buy one of those body pillows if they are the right length and do a simple cream cover out of fabric with a nubby texture.

Can I ask where you bought the sofa? I have the opposite problem with sofas. I can never find one that is deep enough for me and my dogs to fit on. I love the look of your sofa and would like to check it out!

A border technique that I have used for pillows is to use a solid color fabric that picks up a color in your main fabric. I cut strips from the solid fabric that are 2" - 2 1/2" wide (depending on how wide a border I want), piece together enough to run the perimeter of the pillow fabric, then iron it in half long-wise, with the right sides out. You then have a long piece of 'trim' that you use like you would fringe, etc. You have to work the corners a little - I create a pleat that allows me to turn the corner.

I like this method of finishing pillows - it adds a little more finish to the pillow, but is way more economical than fringe or trim.

SP, interesting idea. You make a pleat at the corners rather than a mitered corner?

I ran into that with two of my sofas (you'd think I would have learned, he?) -- one leather and one fabric -- and the back pillows seem to 'slip' equally on both.

If you want all of your pillows to be in the same fabric, you could do a mix of shapes and trims in a symmetrical arrangement -- I'm thinking five total, like the first picture of Olychick's that shows. For example, use a plain border fabric for the two next to the center, and a fringe for the outer two. For the center pillow, either a fringe, or border and fringe combination.

What's your preference for simple versus mix'y?

bbstx, I find that the pleat method goes a lot faster for me -- I can make the pleat 'on the fly' as I sew the pillow cover.

It is really just one inverted pleat at each corner, usually about 1/2" , just enough to give me ease in the border to turn the corner, if that makes sense.
