What is your creative process/steps ?

I am new to the digital world, but I have always loved photography.

I feel very "uncoordinated" in the steps AFTER I take a photo. We just came back from Hawaii and I am trying to get organized on the steps I need to take. I feel like there must be an easier way then what I am thinking - I haven't attempted it yet, and maybe I am making it harder than it has to be. (?)

I have the photos in a file in "my photos". Out of the 150 or so, I need to go through and delete any of the ones that I know I don't want to keep.

Then I need to decide which ones I will print. I use Costco - not a home printer. I will be enlarging some to frame.

Would I put them all in a file in Photoshop and go throught them and edit them, then when it comes to Costco do I take them from the photoshop file? I hope you know what I mean when I say I just don't know in what order I should do things, so that I am not duplicating steps. I feel like this is taking me soooo long to do.

Do I only use Photoshop on the ones that I am editing? Then I would have 2 files and that seems awkward and difficult to keep straight.

So I am interested in how you organize yourself.

I normally just use MS Office Picture Manager that comes with MS Office 2003 package. I like this tool because it's simple and easy for editing. It also allows you to crop, compress, resize and rename files in batches.

Then, I would burn the selected photos on a CD and just bring it to a local 1-hour photo for prints.

Be awared that some of their machines don't like file names that are not continous or have some of these: *, &, %, #, etc.. In other words, if you rename the jpg files, use only alphabets and numbers and run them together without any spacing.

This is what I do because 1. saves space on computer hard drive 2. never lets the original photo be damaged.

I take the memory card to Woodmans and get a CD (only a CD not prints) made. Cost $2.00. Bring the Cd home and run the photos I like thru Photoshop. Put the photos I want prints made of into a flash drive and take to be printed or sometimes just upload to Snapfish. Then I file the CD somewhere with all the photos. Only the ones I put into Photoshop are on my hard drive.

It gets 30 mpg with mostly city driving. Feel GREAT driving. Love it. My bike barely fits inside, but only when taking front and rear wheel off. This is the same as in the trunk of what used to be my honda, but this time, both back seats are down, and there really isn't much room inside anymore, when the bike is in it. whew, long sentence! "It makes little sense to me as why people would take such a winding road of using drawings from one dealer to purchase a different brand of cabinets from other dealer." You'd think wouldn't ya? But it happens all the time. After all the design is free right? Over the years I've had, and seen other KDs have, clients walk off at the end taking plans to another dealer who now doesn't have to work much, solve details, etc. So discounts the job. Hence some dealers want retainer. The majority of dealers don't ask for a retainer. Many that do want it up front to do any work. Some don't want to scare clients but want to be covered so charge in stages, a small sum to start and establish price, then more for finals. It sounds like that is the model your place uses since 500 is only adequate for a really small simple job. Places that ask for a full retainer up front want much more. I realize you believe you have a finished design already. Based on average experience, the dealer may not. It is rare for someone to walk in with a plan that doesn't require a good bit of work and revisions. I can't tell without being there. Hollysprings says hi end shops charge retainers. While I do plenty of hi end I also do lots of little jobs. To me it is a matter of respecting what I do. I am convinced that it makes for a better relationship with the client. I do retainers, after the second design meeting. By then I've been to the site, a scheme is chosen and clear pricing is provided. Typically I have 12-20 hrs in by then. I get 10%, commit or shop. I always release drawings -drafts (and parts lists with itemized prices) from then on. There can be as many revisions as needed. This is not the typical model uused by anyone else though. Occasionally I will release a draft without a retainer: when it doesn't matter, not much work is put in, a referral from a pro, or I really trust the client. In your case I might but hard to say. Finals are more work, should be few if any revisions, and require a final site visit. They come at the end. (I've done plenty of jobs where the finals were 8-10 pages, 11 x 17) I get paid by when you buy cabinets, but I sell kitchens. Kitchens involve design, details and service - all included but not free. Someone suggested that renderings, design and such are provided in the hopes of selling the job. That is how many dealers work and I believe it accounts for some of the problems folks see with lackluster KDs. Not unlike- Your boss asks you to put in a week and half on a project, but won't let you know if your getting paid until your done. Edited to add: There is a legal liability attached to drawings. I know of one case where client took drawings from dealer A, bought cabinets from dealer B, had problems and sued BOTH dealers. And won the suit against both. Are you DIY? Or, do you have a KD and/or GC? If so, ask them how they work. If not, there are also many resources in the Library that would help. Here's what I've learned from our experiences...a very, very general synopsis of events: Generally, you would make the infrastructure changes first. This includes changing doors/windows/walls/ceilings as well as rough-ins for plumbing and electrical work. Preliminary electrical & plumbing work will need to be inspected prior to closing up walls and installing cabinets. In our case, we wanted the tile to go under the cabinets, so we put in the tile floor before the cabinets and appliances. Those who do not want to tile (or put other flooring) under their cabs & appliances sometimes wait to do the floor after the cabinets have been installed. If you do this, be sure the flooring under the cabinets & appliances will be flush with the planned finished floor...this is so (1) you can easily install/remove appliances and (2) you don't lose counter height. Some people paint before the cabinets go in...we primed walls & ceiling and then painted the ceiling. But, we're waiting to paint the walls b/c I'm still not sure what color I want to use and need to see everything installed first. Cabinets go in b/f appliances, of course. Then there's crown molding and light rail and cabinet lights (inside/under/over). Backsplash can be now or later. Appliances go in after the cabinets are installed. Then there's the toekick, furniture base, shoe molding, etc. All the finishing touches. Final electrical & plumbing inspection. Do NOT take this as gospel...it's just a general outline of what was done on our project...YMMV! HTH!

Blueostrich's advice about taking your time is a good one, and I think figuring out what you like is definitely the first step. I think one of the hardest parts of coming up with a design is limitless possibilities. Knowing what you like helps narrow in on where you should go. In addition to living in the space for awhile, I like to do mockups or pre-visualization. Either with drawings, Photoshop, or Sketchup. Sketchup is the most useful to me but the most time consuming. Admittedly it's not for everyone, but it makes it easy to see approximately how things will work, spatially, and makes it easy to swap elements in and out. I find that the design always evolves from the first thought. I either change my mind or refine it over time. So not having the time or money to do something you want immediately I actually think can be a good thing because it gives you an opportunity to sit on it. Renovations can be expensive and it's good to have a very clear picture of what you want and what the final product will look like, in my opinion. I recently renovated a small bathroom, and I'd say I spent about 6 months thinking about it and picking out materials and furnishings, and about 2 months on the actual labor. For inspiration I use some of the sites you mentioned, as well as furniture magazines which often have their furniture staged in spaces that can be used as inspiration. I try to DIY everything I can. Not only can it save money, but it feels good to have had a part in bringing the design to life. The only times I've contracted stuff out is if it's simply going to take me way too long (I have a full-time day job and a kid after all), or I'm worried I'll severely screw something up. While I probably could have attempted any of these, I've had plumbing, flooring, and tile work done by professionals because they are experienced and can accomplish it much faster. Sometimes with larger tasks it can be worth the money. I'll throw in, with any project, but especially if you plan on relying on DIY, it will always, always take longer than you think. And probably cost more, too.

Because I'm teaching a beginning digital photography class this week (one time only, for seniors), I asked about people's storing/editing procedures on another forum. I was surprised at the wide range of preferences.

Like Bean Counter, I put my photos on a CD commercially (Walmart). But first I use a card reader to upload them to Photoshop, where I resize selected images and save them to a CD for emailing or uploading to my Flickr or Photobucket pages.

If you save selected images to bring to Costco for printing, do not resize them. Save them onto a CD in their original size.

Good luck! You'll figure out what works best for you eventually. :-)

One thing I found out, after I switched to digital is to burn my own CD's on my computer at home. Or if you cannot do that, make sure wherever you take them to be put on a CD has the capacity to store them in the same size your camera shoots them. Walmart resizes the size of your file to a much smaller file. For example, I shoot with a Canon Digital EOS Rebel XT (8.1 megapixels), and I shoot on the largest file size. When I download my photos, they are usually between 3 and 4 megabytes for each photo. When Walmart finishes burning your CD,each picture is downsized to less than 2 megabytes. At least that is how they used to be, unless they have upgraded their system. So anyway...my point is to be very careful that wherever you take them they burn them AS THEY ARE!!!

I bought Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 to make music CDs and just recently started using the photo section of it and I love it. I print my own and also started printing some of my favorite travel photos to hang, 8X10s, 5X7s, etc.. I needed some pictures to decorate with and thought why not use my own. I am doing a picture frame that holds 9.... 4 X 6 pictures of the Panama Canal to hang. I will put them in the order that we went through the Canal. I do not enhance them to make the picture prettier, I like them to be natural, just like it was.

I don't take them to be printed because they often crop them to the size you want and they crop parts I don't want cropped.
