Best anti-dander shampoo - owner allergic to dander

We just got a female beagle puppy for our 14 year old son for Christmas. It has been quite a few years since I had a dog. I am allergic to animal dander and always used anti-dander shampoo and conditioner with my other dog.

Can anyone suggest the best shampoo and conditioner to buy to use?

I've learned a lot on other subjects from reading this forum, but haven't seen this subject addressed.

She is an indoor dog and is getting attached to me, but my allergies are really kicking in and I need to do something pretty quickly.

I am not going to be much help, but you know that the dander is not the fur. Is it true that for you to be allergic, you are reacting to microscopic particles rather than what you can see? What you can see will not go into your nose.

I suggest that you keep the dog in a few or couple of areas of the house, but not the whole house - especially never allow her into your bedroom. You might want to keep another room for you and watching TV.

The areas for the dog should have tile or flooring rather than carpeting. You might want to purchase an electrostatic air filter. We change the filters on out AC - heater every week, but we have 2 goldens.

I'm not familiar with specific shampoos but they do make dander control products you wipe the dog with. I think one is called Allerpet-D and it worked very well for my sister

I suppose that since you are allergic to their dander, any anti-dander/seborrhea shampoo will work for your purposes. Although be careful about drying your cat's coat out too much. May need to use an after-bath moisturizer like Humilac to replace the essential oils in your cat's coat. Have you tried allergy shots? My dog had terrible allergies and they worked for him. But I have a human friend that has tried them several times and it didn't help at all. From what I understand, they work in about 50% of dogs and humans. I hope you start to feel better. I'm allergic to horses, but unfortunately can't avoid them sometimes in vet school. Knowing when I'm going to be exposed helps, because if I pre-load with diphenhydramine, I do OK. But then I can't sleep for 2 nights. I'm one of those people with a paradoxical excitement reaction to antihistamines. Lucky me. If your drugs are not working, then you may have to switch them. Sometimes drugs just stop working- your body adjusts to them or whatever. There are several vets at school who swear by Singulair for their horse allregies, but it didn't help me at all. Must be one of those things. I know allergies are such a PITA. Please con someone else into bathing and especially drying your cats for you, else you will just blow up with allergies. Good luck.

UPDATE: I'm now off prednisone and the asthma seems to be subsiding. I guess all the measures we've taken (steam-cleaning carpets, HEPA filter, allergen-neutralizing spray, washing walls, opening windows, etc.) must have reduced the cat dander to a level my body can handle. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and advice. At the same time I have to wonder why many people were so quick to insist on drastic solutions. (I should add that my husband agreed -- he was ready to rip out the carpets from day one.) To me it makes sense to tough it out for at least a couple of weeks, assuming there isn't a true health emergency. I suppose I have a reasonably high tolerance for living with low-level misery, as long as there's an end in sight. If things had taken a turn for the worse I would of course have taken appropriate action.

I grew up with asthma and eczema due to environmental allergies. Also have a serious allergy to peanuts, one of my first memories is refusing to eat a peanut butter sandwich because it gave me a tummy ache. Still have environmental allergies and peanut allergy and have added allergies to tree nuts, melons and avocado. If I eat a lot then it's bad, if I eat a trace then I have a mild stomach ache that lasts for weeks. It mimics hunger pangs so I eat and eat. Awful. Terribly allergic to cats but if I give the dogs a bath every few weeks I'm fine with them. Apparently I'm reacting to the pollens and such that get into their fur more than the dander as their licking annoys me but doesn't cause any problem. A couple times a kiss from a large dog has caused a reaction though. When I was commuting to college by bicycle I could ride through a mild asthma attack, that was wonderful. Sometimes I can walk through one nowadays. There's a Ukrainian physiologist who developed breathing patterns to correct the panicked pattern that asthmatics do, suspect that is what was going on when I rode or walked through a mild attack. It isn't supposed to work but it does for me.

One size does not fit all. Each person has to take in consideration all the things that matter when considering getting a dog at any age. There are financial, health, where you live, and family obligations to think about. We are both 65, still young enough but have health problems. We have a 16 YO Dachshund and when she goes, that is it when it comes to pets. I have Parkinson's and with an older dog it has become more difficult. She is a tripping hazard and because of my disease I have almost fallen a lot of times. She likes to be next to me at all times. She can't help getting under my feet as she is almost completely blind and deaf and has arthritis. She is on medication but still can't do stairs, even the 3 out front. It is very difficult for me to carry her up and down the stairs. DH has put railings by all the stairs and it helps but is not a guarantee against falling or dropping her. DH can't be around all the time, we have 2.5 acres to take care of, and she has to go out every 2 hours. And then there is the financial end of it. We have spent thousands on her over the last 16 years and I love her so much I would do it again, but I don't want to have another 'money pit' pet. You never know what you are going to get. I would love to get another dog someday, but I feel it is not practical for us. I would like to volunteer at the SPCA, like I did when we were between dogs before, but they probably won't let me because of my Parkinson's. I couldn't do fostering because I would grow too attached and wouldn't want to give them up and there is all the reasons above. And also we are considering moving into a condo in the next 5 years, so it might be against the rules to have a dog. There are many reasons not to get a dog as you age. It doesn't mean you don't want to do so, it just means you are facing the cruel hard facts of life.

Sammy- I have always had only tile or similar flooring since I was allergy tested and found that I was allergic to dust,animal dander, and many other things. At the time I had a dog and loved her so that I refused to get rid of her. I have the extra air purifier machine and change the air filter religiously on the furnace/air conditioner.
After my dog died I never got another.
11 years later my 14 year old step-son begged so hard for a beagle that my heart couldn't say no. She is not allowed in my room but I am still exposed to her as I just retired and am home all of the time. She seems to radiate straight to me when I enter any room she is in and wants to get in my lap. (Of course I can't ALWAYS ignore her because of those pitiful, sweet, begging eyes!!!!!) The anti-dander shampoo and conditioner worked wonderfully with my other dog, but it has been so many years that I can't remember what the brand name was. I was hoping that someone here may have experience with a good brand and could give me a heads up on it. Thanks for all of your suggestions though.

Lisa- thanks for the info on Allerpet-D. I may try that first before going the shampoo-conditioner route.
