Stuffing mix tweaks without putting it in the turkey?

I have requests to make bread stuffing but no one actually likes it cooked IN the bird. I like the shorter cooking time of an unstuffed turkey anyway.

I have a bag of pre-seasoned stuffing, what can I do to make it more interesting? I followed the recipe on the bag last year, which seemed to consist mostly of melting great quantities of butter, adding chicken broth, then the dry mix, then letting it sit. I added onions and celery and in my opinion, it was still just soggy bread. Bleeah. I have never liked bread stuffing myself under any conditions (really donÂt like bread much), but even I could tell it was boring.

I am not up for making stuffing totally from scratch, as I have too many other dishes to make. Anyone have any easy tweaks? Chopped apple? Raisins? Nuts? And how should it be cooked/baked?

Thanks!
