allison...contact your nearest shelter..NOT to have the cat taken there, but to find out where the local rescue groups are. There is a rescue group that takes in pets from elderly people that have to go into nursing homes and are teribly upset about what may happen to their long time companion. I can not remember what it is called, I used to when I was a forster mom for rescued dogs. I will research it for you. Thank you for caring!!!

Also call the cat's veterinarian. They often will help in these situations. My DM's cat came from a vet's office........very similar circumstances.
As lisa said call rescue groups. Any chance you could foster the cat while they try to place it thru PetFinder?

I can't help--I'm nowhere near AL, but I'm sure there must be rescue groups in that area. The poor thing is probably so lonely and frightened. I also second the suggestion that you contact her vet.

We know about our local animal rescue groups but they were hoping to place her with a "friend of a friend." She placed her two dogs by placing flyers at the vets. DD2 told the son today she would be happy to take flyers to several. I think they were going the "friend" route to make the mom feel better, but she was taken to the hospital today so they need to change the plan.

I found out this morning that the son is staying at the apartment sometimes so the cat isn't alone all the time. He's still in high school so I don't know how often.

Normally, it's very hard to get an adult cat even in the door of a rescue group, due to long waiting lists, if they even do waiting lists. However, I think this is a perfect situation for a rescue group. It sounds terrible and cynical, but this is the kind of story they love to play up. The worse off the animal or the surrendering owner is, the more likely they are to take the animal in and promote it on t.v. or where ever they do their promotions. There's a shelter in my area that's big on this kind of thing. So, in this case, there's a high likely-hood of a shelter taking the cat in and finding a good home for the kitty.

The benefit of going through a shelter is that they usually screen the adoptees, and do their best to make sure the pet goes to a good home. Flyers posted around can invite anyone, and believe me, you don't want this cat going to just anyone. "Just anyone" can include laboratories, people that want barn cats, etc. I was at a rescue event one day when a mother came in desperately wanting to take a kitten home with her right then and there. The group had a kitten that looked just like her kitten that got out and was run over by a car while the child was at a friend's. The mother wanted to replace the kitten before the child returned. Of course, the group said no way. So, you have to be careful.

i disagree, besides the fact shelters are dumping grounds for unwanted pets, they support bad foods, supply the pet food workers with cat/dog carcasses from their freezers, and the fact that the cat is de clawed and will be seen by young families is sad simply because I think it sends bad messages to children, that de clawing cats is okay, that when you get tired of your pets you can simply dump them here. The fact she's black only makes things worse for her. Black cats find it even harder to find homes because of supersitions, and are more likely to be picked up by satin worshippers/bad people to be use in cults.

People should think about the animals when they adopt pets. I hope this cat lands in a good forever home, give her away to the adult children or to friends is my advice to you.

Also try Craigslist. This has been used successfully by people I know to adopt as well as find homes for pets in the local area.

And to the previous poster's point: My friend who fosters cats always avoids posting adoptees in the month of October if the adoptee is a black cat. She will hold on to them until November to ensure an appropriate adoptive family and avoid ill motives.

I recommend you read the dates of the post, so as not to bring up old stuff that has already been answered or taken care of.

I friend told me this thread had be resurrected. It was a hectic time last February - the owner/woman passed away that week. DD2 did find a loving home for the cat - an older woman whose cat had passed away a few months before. DD2 spoke with her several times since and the cat is doing well.

Though its sad to hear of the death of the owner, its good news to know that the kitty found a good home.
