Rouladen (pic) Sorry didn't like pickles!

I made the rouladen......... OK...... This is ME (Hayjud)

So ........I didn't exactly follow the recipe (as usual!)

I used cube steaks.

The pickels were Hamburger pickles.

I added onion (glad I did that)

I didn't have bacon, so used ham (as per Moni, our official German.)

DH loved the Rouladen, I thought the pickle was too strong.

I made Spaetzle to go with it, but DH refused to even eat that.

I also cooked shreaded cabbege and a couple red pepper rings to serve with it. That was good.

I know it wasn't a very good try with that many variances.

I love rouladen...but I use the dill pickle in mine...and find I cant even tell its there with the end result

We just canned some kosher dill pickles and some of the jars didn't seal so we put them in the refrigerator over nite and the next morning they looked sealed. The little pop up was down and concave. Do you think they are really sealed? I took one out and took the ring off then turned it upside down and it remained sealed, what do you think? Every jar we put in the refrigerator looks the same as the one I took out.

I'm not sure what it is but it's very pretty. Is it fragrant? Does it rebloom? Do you know how long it's been there? How many winters has it been through? So many questions. :-) It definitely looks modern, like a Hybrid Tea. Do the blooms have any yellow, like on the outside petals? It doesn't look like it from the pictures, but sometimes the yellow doesn't show up.

I had pillows made by an upholster. I made my out of 2 different fabrics so I can switch with the seasons - with the welt cord a contrasting fabric. Here they are with the wool plaid for winter. And here with the khaki linen. Older pic but only one I have with old couch... On my club chairs I had kidney pillows made the same way but they are tufted with a button of the constrasting fabric. That little angel couldn't have done anything that bad. That's the same thing I said about our little Great Dane angel when I got home from work one day and saw this...and dh was at home when this happened. I told him he can't just look at a computer and/or tv screen all day and think nothing is going to happen around the house. Sorry about the fan boxes, but we are expecting an electrician one day this week to install them. ( I'm even sorrier about the love seat ) I'm not going furniture shopping until I'm sure he is through eating it. Linda

As most recipes are just guidelines, you can adlib a lot in a recipe like that. I did make a couple with the pickle, but I also spread all of them with caramelized onions and mushrooms. They were all delish. With the Spaetzle, try frying them in a little olive oil till they are hot. That's what did it for Deej. He thought they were corn and just loved them. I could also see sauteing onions first, then adding the spaetzle for a couple of minutes. Would make a huge difference in the flavor.

Frying the Spaetzle sounds a lot better. I was using one of the many choices from All Recipies.

I think the hamburger pickles have a very different flavor from just dill pickle. I thought they were the same.
I think I put far too much stuff in the steak. It was over-powered.

It was a fun experiment, but I don't plan on trying it again.

We must have replied at the same time.

Pronounced:

Roo (like in rooster)
la (like in singing la la la LA)
den (like at the end of garden)

The next Ethnic (LOL) thing I want to try is Pasties from the U.P. of Michigan. First I need to learn to pronounce that RIGHT! There was a article in our newspaper about them, and I saved it. That is a future adventure.

The spaetzle is like a thin pasta batter that was pushed through something with holes in it. I used my steamer pan. Let it fall into boiling water. It was too soft for our taste. Maybe the frying it after it was cooked in the water would have made it much better.

We make rouladen as our Christmas Eve dinner. My gramdmother started the tradition. Yummy.

I make Sauerbraten and Spaetzle and always serve it with Sauerbraten gravy. It is really good that way. Your Rouladen looks good. I leave the pickle out of mine. DH's mother & grandmother (from Germany) recipe doesn't include it. I also buy jars of pickled red cabbage and serve it with that. I like it better then Sauerkraut.
