Rouladen (pic) Sorry didn't like pickles!

I made the rouladen......... OK...... This is ME (Hayjud)

So ........I didn't exactly follow the recipe (as usual!)

I used cube steaks.

The pickels were Hamburger pickles.

I added onion (glad I did that)

I didn't have bacon, so used ham (as per Moni, our official German.)

DH loved the Rouladen, I thought the pickle was too strong.

I made Spaetzle to go with it, but DH refused to even eat that.

I also cooked shreaded cabbege and a couple red pepper rings to serve with it. That was good.

I know it wasn't a very good try with that many variances.

I love rouladen...but I use the dill pickle in mine...and find I cant even tell its there with the end result

Thanks Smoochas!! Honestly, I really don't know what I'm doing,lol...I'm one of those that cut...and then wonder if I've done the right thing? Josh is giving you the right advise. I really need to follow his advise for the next "whacking"...He knows what he's talking about. PG is right about rooting taking so long especially in this heat. I had a small cutting that took over four months to start putting out a "few' tiny roots and that was in the fall/winter(which is the best time for me to root Jades) ...its very hard to have patience believe me I know. I wasn't blessed with much. Don't give up and good luck!

Oh yes, this is a great thread, LOL. Let's see, I made some completely tasteless corn and black bean salsa, the beans just seemed to absorb everything and it tasted like eating paste or cardboard. Anyway, it was a bad idea. My pickles are always soft, except Linda Lou's sweet pickle chunks. And, as Readinglady pointed out, everyone doesn't like the same things. I don't care for dill or sour pickles at all, but Dad loves 'em, so I make them. One batch, every year. The remainder of my cukes become sweet relish and those sweet pickle chunks that I love. My worst canning experiment wa the mincemeat. Yes, the real stuff with beef and "2 pounds of suet". It was mincemeat like Dad remembered all right and every bite would coat your mouth with that lovely layer of tallow. Ewwww. It was awful and I could feel my arteries slamming shut. I've never made a spaghetti sauce that my girls liked as well as they like Prego, but that's them, LOL. I think the roasted red pepper spread needs some hot peppers, it's too bland without them. I made some really good kumquat chutney but can't figure out how the heck to use it all up, it just doesn't "go" with a lot of things. Then there was the dandelion wine..... Annie

I had pillows made by an upholster. I made my out of 2 different fabrics so I can switch with the seasons - with the welt cord a contrasting fabric. Here they are with the wool plaid for winter. And here with the khaki linen. Older pic but only one I have with old couch... On my club chairs I had kidney pillows made the same way but they are tufted with a button of the constrasting fabric. syllabus, I have a hard time with pics, but will tell you what I bought and what I did I got the the stuff at Lowe's paintable wall paper, tile look quart of Valspar ultra premium interior satin finish in the steel gray color a pint of Valspar signature metal & patina glaze a quart of Valspar signature clear protector faux satin finish I painted with a brush the steel gray let it dry and then I put the glaze on in a circular motion with an old sock then seal it so that it is washable with the sealer I did it all in one day, but my kitchen backsplash is only 22 ft. this costed less than 35.00 good luck! If I did it again I would go a shade or 2 lighter than the steel gray, I think.

As most recipes are just guidelines, you can adlib a lot in a recipe like that. I did make a couple with the pickle, but I also spread all of them with caramelized onions and mushrooms. They were all delish. With the Spaetzle, try frying them in a little olive oil till they are hot. That's what did it for Deej. He thought they were corn and just loved them. I could also see sauteing onions first, then adding the spaetzle for a couple of minutes. Would make a huge difference in the flavor.

Frying the Spaetzle sounds a lot better. I was using one of the many choices from All Recipies.

I think the hamburger pickles have a very different flavor from just dill pickle. I thought they were the same.
I think I put far too much stuff in the steak. It was over-powered.

It was a fun experiment, but I don't plan on trying it again.

Pronounced:

Roo (like in rooster)
la (like in singing la la la LA)
den (like at the end of garden)

The next Ethnic (LOL) thing I want to try is Pasties from the U.P. of Michigan. First I need to learn to pronounce that RIGHT! There was a article in our newspaper about them, and I saved it. That is a future adventure.

The spaetzle is like a thin pasta batter that was pushed through something with holes in it. I used my steamer pan. Let it fall into boiling water. It was too soft for our taste. Maybe the frying it after it was cooked in the water would have made it much better.

We make rouladen as our Christmas Eve dinner. My gramdmother started the tradition. Yummy.

I make Sauerbraten and Spaetzle and always serve it with Sauerbraten gravy. It is really good that way. Your Rouladen looks good. I leave the pickle out of mine. DH's mother & grandmother (from Germany) recipe doesn't include it. I also buy jars of pickled red cabbage and serve it with that. I like it better then Sauerkraut.
