I Didn't Used To Like The Blooms

Since this is the first season I have paid attention to hosta, its only natural that I notice things for the first time. Those front yard, full-sun hosta I see everywhere always looked ratty at bloom time. Negative influences. Poisoned my perspective.

Some of my hosta have nice blooms!

Guacamole is new and the blooms are tremendous. Large and fragrant.

Halcyon has been around awhile but this year it was transplanted by the front door. The blooms are blue-violet and very pretty. They stay relatively low which helps the look.

I'm waiting to see how Krossa Regal will look. He's almost ready.

Which of your hosta produce outstanding blooms? Pictures please.

ALL OF THEM ... if .. as you note .. you take the time to study them ...

take a flower off ... remover the sex parts [no use walking around with a yellow nose ... been there.. done that ...] ... and tear one side of the petal.. and unfurl it.. so that it lays flat..

you will be amazed at the patterns and designs of the purple and white ...

this is how schmid displayed them in his first and older tome ... i will check the species articles at the library ... see below

I presume you all who decided on HVX on that leaf also looked at the leaves of 'Captain Kirk' in the Hosta Library. Being not an expert, and hesitant to shoot from the hip, some of the library leaves seem to have such 'dark green bleed on the veins' too, possibly this is a characteristic of this cultivar at that development time. Anyway, I don't know if that one number being off can really make that much difference, but I'm thinking it did. Yes, it can. That's why I'm always preaching that the typical paint/color consumer has no business getting involved with the formulas and colorant listings on the label. This is why "cutting" formulas by a percentage is a ridiculous concept - it sounds so precise, but there's nothing precise about it. And altho people speak to having successfully "cut" formulas, it's intangible, unspecific, and not applicable information beyond their own experience with their specific can(s) of color. Whenever you cross brands, take a chip from one brand and have it matched somewhere else, it's not going to be exactly, perfectly, literally just like the original brew from the original brand. Some colors could qualify as a "spot-on match" and others maybe not so much - this also depends on who ya ask if it's a "match" or not. Some people can see sense "what's off" about a color that's been matched in another brand and other people don't see any difference at all - looks the same to them. Color acuity and tolerances are not one-size-fits-all. If it doesn't take much to satisfy your expectations for wall colors, then that's awesome. If you're a little more picky and color sensitive, then that's awesome too. There's no need to reach for or settle for whatever color is most convenient and easy. You might just have to take a lil more time and work a lil harder but most things worth doing requires effort.

I like orange and am more drawn to those tones than something cooler - like pink. I rarely am in a room with pink that appeals to me. My former house had a terra cotta sponged application in the living and dining rooms and I loved it - probably for too many years but the walls had not lost their interest and charm to me. Realizing it may not appeal to the masses however, I painted all a fresh medium beige with all white crisp woodwork before listing the house for sale (just three years ago so I don't know if I was ahead or behind decorating time) and that gave the home a whole new vibe....sold in the first week ;)

Congrats to your friends! My story is much like Zalco's only I was 31 and no squab. ;-) We had been trying for years to get pregnant again. Took us 5 years and a lot of fertility drugs to get the 1st one. We had been trying for awhile and had almost given up for the next child. I had been taking fertility drugs again, but never had a cycle, I mean NEVER, so I really didn't think I could even GET pregnant. I was 5 months along before I had the pregnancy test. I'd been working on getting fit again, and had lost about 35 lbs and plateaued on the weight loss, and couldn't figure out why. One would assume that I would have know what the signs were having been pregnant before, Nausea, hard abdomen, etc. But nooooo.... when you have no monthly cycles, you don't think you are PG. I was also considered "high risk." But when you don't realize you're PG, you continue to do things you're not supposed to, like mow the lawn, climb up and down ladders to get on the roof, and to paint and all kinds of risky things. When my doctor giggled and told me I was pregnant, I told her I wanted a note from her saying I never had to mow the lawn again!! LOL 3 months after we learned I was expecting, we had an 8 lb girl. I was pre-eclamptic (with both babies actually) and a c-section was necessary. My blood pressure bottomed out on the surgery table and all I remember was when I was coming around, the Doctor was telling my husband, "no more babies." My children are not quite 5 years apart. 18 years would be quite the adjustment for me.

For the first time I saw plain old Hosta Ventricosa,in bloom, this year at our Connies sisters house.WOW!
That deep purple flower with the green leaves was just stunning.
I just had to have one,so now i do.
No pictures,sorry, i hope some one can show you how pretty,massed together.

I think the issue with the flowers being "ugly" is that they stand so tall (in many cases) and look awkward to some eyes. However, I have daylilies around my hostas, and so when the hostas bloom, the taller foliage of the daylilies, along with their blooms, provide a beautiful backdrop.

Also, keep in mind that the flowers are edible!

Hummingbirds sure love the blooms, especially Striptease for some reason...they can't get enough!!

Here are some pictures of hosta blooming in my Minnesota garden last week and today.

Some of my hosta are in a mixed border.

Can anyone identify this very large (6' wide X 3'+ high) hosta?

I like hosta blossoms and daylilies together.

Blooming hosta are pretty with coneflowers, too.

Wow! You definitely have the touch for perennial gardening. Not to mention photography. You have some beautiful blooming hosta.

I think the bloom is better in the shade here.

Your pictures are so wonderful,are you one and the same who posted the picture of th bee in flight?That one was amazing.
I love the blooms on hosta also,although you have a special knack for capturing their true beauty.
I have a lot of,what I thought, were HoneyBell,that are not in bloom yet, i will post a picture in the next couple of weeks,really pretty.
