Harvest Canning Jars where do I find lids?

I purchased 2 Harvest canning jars at a good will today, thinking that my lids for my Ball jars would fit, but my other jars are wide mouth. The Harvest are quart and pint size, and the measure across the top is 2.5". I searched eBay with no luck. I don't can, but uses these jars for sauces and salsas. Any ideas where I can find replacements? I somehow think that tin foil will not keep the contents as fresh and certainly not as appealing.

Are these the typical canning jars, or perhaps the old size that was referred to as a "63"?

We discuss old canning jars on Harvest regularly, and ebay is one of the places that people use as a source for old lids.

Do you have a regular lid that you can check to see if it fits because it sounds close to a normal canning size jar to me.

The first place I would try would be the local hardware store.

When I got it, it was horse pasture on a hill. My garden spot was in the middle on one of the terraces they created when the pasture was created. Long and narrow, 20 ft x 60 or more long. I believe it was all trees at one time. I don't really know. In the "old days" they used to burn or bury all their trash. I figure at some point, these were buried or got buried over time. They weren't deep either. Not more than 6 or 8 inches. The other place they used to dispose of things were in outhouses. Relic hunters look on old home sites for old outhouse sites in search of old glass bottles and relics of the past. I doubt there was an outhouse there, but that dirt might have been excavated when terracing or clear cutting for the pasture. I dunno. Of course, it could have been from years of passersby tossing things in the woods at the time and they just happened to land there. Or maybe it was an old moonshine still site. The jars, if in good shape with no rim nicks or cracks of any kind can safely be used IF the 2 part lids will fit on them. Many of us use really old jars. Some of us use them only for BWB recipes rather than pressure canning but some will also use them in pressure canning as all you stand to lose is thejar of contents if they don't hold up to the pressure. The lids are another problem. The bail top jars and gaskets haven't been 'officially' approved for decades now because of the questionable quality of the seals. Like many of the other old time methods of canning they fall into the Equipment and Methods No Longer Recommended category. Only the 2 piece flats and bands are 'officially' approved. But some of us who have some of the old bail type jars do still use them for really high acid foods like pickles. Most just use them for dry storage items like dried beans and such. That type of use is approved. Personally I wouldn't trust them in pressure canning or with low acid or border-line acid foods. If you are just getting back into canning after several years it would pay to spend some time exploring the NCHFP website for all the latest guidelines and information. Start with the FAQs there. You know Dick laughs at me when we travel...and I go "Ohhhh...a WalMart!!" Well, I can find the odd canning jar that I can't find here. I don't know about NoVA but I can also find things at the Annapolis Farm store. I bet there might be some of those lurking in VA still. And what about Wegmans? esp the one out Reston way. btw, on this note, I got some 12oz canning jars in Shoppers for $6.99 about 3 weeks ago. I happened to be in Safeway for my final 99c peaches and checked their jars. A fr*ckin" $13.99 a box!!!!!!! And...do I have to go to Canada to get those small 125ml (2oz?) Bernardin jars? Maureen

No they aren't hot-fill only. They are used for things like jellies and jams that are BWB for short periods of time. Note the description says "not FOR LONGER WATER BATH (> 15 minutes) " so no more than 15 mins. Can't say how many people may be using them for home canning since they are expressly NOT recomended by NCHFP. I suspect there are still far more of the great-grandma-did-it-this-way bunch still doing open kettle canning than there should be. But if they are using them then technically that is fine for short BWB use. As for commercial canners using them with their very different equipment and different guidelines, I can't say. But it still doesn't mean they are doing open kettle canning. Dave

Yep, hardware, Agway or Wal-Mart always seem to have lids in the right size for any jar I pick up. Good luck!

Well, good luck! I was trying to replace my GEM jar lids (3") too but had no luck. I have searched places from garage sales to the Goodwill Store so far I found nothing. Now I use them to store dry ingredients so the lids won't rust any more. Al

Bernardin does still sell the Gem jar lids (78 mm) but what're impossible to find are the old WWII 63 mm lids and rings. Those extra-narrow mouths were made to save on metal as a part of the war effort.

I'd say the odds of finding any of those are very slim.

You could enter a saved search on Ebay and they'll email you if anything turns up. Save the search for a year and it's possible something will appear.

Is it not the normal size lids? I have some jars that I think are harvest & they are just the smaller size lid that you can get anywhere. I often save my Hellmann's mayo jar lids to use when I open something & don't use it all at once for short term storage. Somehow I just prefer a one piece top.
