Bird in a barrel...

This little bird stayed until I stepped closer...THis was also with VFW Memrial...it's from a naval ship and don't know the name of it...

My kids had a ball on one of those at the local VFW post. It was not welded so that it could not move. One would sit on one side and work the traverse (left and right) and the other would work the elevation (up and down) making the gun barrel move in all directions. They have since came and got it and replaced it with a much smaller yet similar type of gun. When they sat it on the stand, they welded it all up so that nothing would work on it.

Not sure which model of Anti-aircraft gun it is or the shell size. It looks like a 75 MM. They were placed in shallow pits along coast lines and around military bases to protect against bombers.

A funny thing I have learned about such displays. When WW2 ended. The military had so much equipment left over that they did not know what to do with it. So they LOANED it to cities/towns, originations like the VFW, museums and such. The ones receiving the items for display had to build a place for it to be displayed. Get the word loaned. The US Government could at any time come and get the item without giving a reason. That is why that you rarely ever see and old piece of military history such as a combat tank or Amour ed Personal Carrier up for sale by anyone, Just small vehicles such as Jeeps, Hummers and trucks. If you do buy such an item. It is a long hard task for the seller to prove that they actually do own the item. Yet you can buy military equipment from countries as Russia, Poland, France, Britain etc etc through brokers and private individuals for once the equipment is used up or released from military duty the government of that country sales it to brokers whom will resale the stuff to just about anyone.

I know that I am a little crazy. But I have always wanted a Russian BMP ever since I saw one while in Germany on border patrol duty.

They can be found in great shape and with very little wear for sale for as little as $25,000 to $40,000 US.
Small price to pay for something to play with that cost about $600,000 when new.. lol

I learned not to keep any containers of water uncovered when I was gardening near my compost bins and heard a scrabbling sound. In one of the buckets of BIM was a little chipmunk swimming for his life and trying to climb out. Have no idea how long he was there but he sure ran away fast when I tipped the bucket and he could get out. I wondered how the BIM affected him. Haven't yet put meat or any dead animals in my compost. DH throws them (mice or marmots) in the woods for the predators. Not sure if this is wise but he refuses to put them in the compost.

Rain barrel: mosquito control

Mosquitoes can go down the gutters and down spout. They can lay eggs in a bottle cap of water. I use the dunks in my pond. Fish can not eat the eggs and mosquitoes fast enough. I use them in my rain barrels also. But in a pinch I have put vegetable oil on a rag and suspended it in the rain barrels. It smothers the eggs and mosquitoes. I also use the BackYard spray. We are in an area that has lots of mosquitoes. A lot of lakes and ponds and swimming pools. Horse troughs, goats etc. That have to have water for drinking.

Ugh, that's terrible. It's funny too because I just bought a half whiskey barrel and was filling it up because I read you have to soak them for a while before planting and I was worried something might fall in and drown. I was going to put a pot upside down but my boyfriend thought any critter would be able to get out. Now I know. I think squirrels deserve just as much right to be in the garden as the people who moved into his territory.

Hi Walks....that's a weird keyboard quirk that you have there...Don't be embarassed though....this turned out to be the most popular thread in perhaps the history of TSL..way to go!.......As far as my daugther, it's a permanent visit. A combination of missing her mother and things not going well at school here...She's a senior this year and I hated to see her do it (my entire family has tried to talk her into waiting just a few more months) but she has her mind made up. She is enrolled in a school down there now but with different graduation criteria, she is looking at summer school in order to get her diploma. She has driven me crazy the last few weeks but I think that this is the best for both of us. I'll start the next "How was..." thread unless someone beats me to it and put a "6" in there in honor of you..gigglin' As far as cats go, this one that I "inherited" is going to have to be shaved before long...it's a long hair mix breed that's starting to mat up and no way am I going to try to clip it out...heh
