Bike ride in the desert

Nothing spectacular, straight out the camera during a bike ride. Some co-workers and I have decided to enter some races later this year. We have been doing this 17 mile trail twice a week.

Yesterday, we had a late start then one of riders folded his front wheel like taco. We lost all sunlight and it was a little intimidating through all of the cacti. One decided to reach out and touch me. I had needles from buttock to ankle. The terrain looks flat in these pictures but that just happens to be this part of the trail.

awm : thank you for the sweet and supportive wishes. I sure hope your ride goes well. Two of the folks I am with have done that ride and loved it. We are indeed fortunate in the support we get from our families. tina thank you too. I will keep up the updates as it helps to clarify things in my head too :). I am glad you are enjoying it. golddust. we had flashing lights but it was just a miserable set of circumstances....hopefully not to be repeated. Glad you like my TALL tales. Sue yes it never has stormed today but we have had a fine time. We walked several miles to go to a Dollar Store and to stretch our legs. Time for a nap I think. Your trip sounds wonderful. I bet you will always cherish that time as will I this trip. Most likely won't do another as I don't want to leave DH this long again but this one time it is good. More later. c

Good bike shops also sometimes have nice bikes that people have traded in when they upgrade. The staff goes over them to make sure everything works properly, and sell them for a very reduced price. So you might not get the exact color you want - you could always have it painted at an auto body shop (or bust out the spray paint) if it meant that much to you. Also, you can call the local police department and ask if they have a bike auction. Many jurisdictions auction off stolen bikes that were never reclaimed by their owners, with the money going to a police charity (like college scholarships for children of officers killed or disabled in the line of duty). A triathlete I know got a $1k+ racing bike for under $100 at a police auction... he was about the only one who knew what it was and snatched it up. All it needed was new tires from sitting in storage for months. I miss riding a bike, but my balance is shot. There are stabilizer wheels for adult bikes but I think they'd just look too goofy. My PT says adult trikes tend to be tippy.

There are several groups and they are taking different routes. He originally was on the Rocky Mountain group but they asked him to switch to the Ozark Mountain group. His mother and step dad have rented a house in Alaska and will be there when they finish the ride to celebrate with all of them.

Only an idiot would do this and I speak from experience. Many years ago, I hopped on my son's bike and took my Afghan hound for a run. Bad move, a very stupidly bad move. She bolted, I was thrown from the bike and had a major concussion. It was like a soap opera. I had amnesia. To this very day I can't tell you my name...just kidding... but I lost three days of my life. This happened on a Monday night and two days before I had bought a room size braided rug at John Wanamakers for the new house we had just moved into. After my fall, I walked into the living room and gasped..where did this rug come from? So , no a very bad idea. Another tragic story concerning dogs and accidents.....my very best friend from age 13 and a big animal lover too had a mastiff who weighed 160 pounds. About four years ago she took the dog out at midnight and the dog pulled her over and she smashed her head on the walk. She was unconscious for a few hours, came to and her husband took her to the hospital. Over these last years her condition deteriorated into Parkinsons and a year ago she was put into a home and last month had a feeding tube put in. She is flat on her back and cannot speak. So people , be careful with your dogs.

I had my mind on other things, like finding my way out if the desert at night.

This area is also open range for cattle. The are wild and not scared to charge you, either. I tried to take a picture of one but started yelling at me as soon as I stopped the bike, then he started to trot over to us. We booked it!

Very nice! Looks like a great place to bike ride, in the daytime of course. There are many different kinds of cactus, but I think most of them bloom in late Summer.

I see the saguaro has a woodpecker hole in it.

Great photos and looking forward to seeing some more!

My wife chalks this up as boys being boys. This actually isn't my crash, but we were playing "double dog dare" on some steep drops, so I had a lot of influence on it happening. Amazingly, all that Paul recieved was a black eye. Erin does wish I would find hobbies that were less dangerous.

I saw a clown ride a bike like that in a rodeo once:)

Good thing you make Paul wear a helmet. How's the weather over there?

Konrad- I will do my best to leave some cacti out for you. It has become joke around the riding group about my attraction for them, or their attraction for me.

Kt- I wonder if that clown rides the same trails we do? The helmet; Paul actually forgot to bring his helmet and tried to ride without one. I had an extra and convinced him to wear it. We may do stupid stunts, but I like to be safe when doing it. Safe and stupid!
