Vinyl floor - what did you get?

I have looked over a variety of floor options and have decided to replace the current vinyl with a new vinyl. The old one is 20 years old! There are a lot of options out there so I am interested in those who chose vinyl

- what did you get (company, color, etc.)
- how is it holding up / do you like it
- installation (is it glued, floated, etc?)

I am really liking some of the stuff by Earthwerks but not seeing much about it past their website and a few flooring sites that recommended it.

I put vinyl plank flooring, the highest level of stuff from Trafficmaster that they sell at Home Depot. I just put it in the entryway. I like it a lot. I think I need to buy the special cleaner, because the salt this year is doing a number. I don't think there is damage, just constantly mopping.

We saw the exact same floor in a restaurant in St. Louis that had been open a year. We asked the owner if it was the stock stuff from HD, it was. He seemed happy with it as well. I had never installed a floor, so it wasn't easy for me. If I had to do it again it would take a couple hours, not a day like the first time.

We have Earthscapes vinyl in our mudroom. It's glued. It's a very nice product. It has different levels of products/warranties. We bought the top, most expensive one. I didn't want it to look bad in 5 years. We got a light gray slate look. It never looks dirty, but it is usually dirty since we track in so much snow, dirt, whatever from the outside.

tdpillo - Please excuse my harshness, but I think you are judging before asking questions. For the record much of our home is DIY. My husband and I did all the hardwood floors, did the majority of subway tile. We did all the grout and mortar. We also did at least half of the millwork throughout the house. We did our own concrete stairs outside in 3 different places, did the scoring on the concrete slab in greatroom, will also do the staining and sealing when the time comes. We did almost all the paint prep. Will do ALL the painting, did the crown throughout the house, did the columns, did the beadboard. Will do the T & G in the outside breezeway. Will set all the finish plumbing fixtures and do final cleanup and all the landscaping which is extensive. I have 11 children, and yes this is a large, expensive home. We absolutely had a budget. If I wanted the house of my dreams I knew we would have to do the work. We also had an incompetent builder that did nothing so we had no choice. Our current home is also a house we re-did everything. We had a smallish (2200 sq. ft) home that had basic apt. type molding everywhere. Formica counters, lino floors etc. We re-did all woodwork, counters, floors, etc. We now have a lovely home to sell w=hen our other home is finished. People can DIY and get these results. It is not impossible. But with such a negative attitude it would be hard for sure. I see something and I want to do it. I have learned so much just getting my hands dirty and saying I can do this. Our current home looks beautiful for a very small amount of money. It can be done, you just have to want it and do the work. I searched out bargains, deals, and internet finds regularly. I do not think someone is destined to mediocrity because of money. Life is what you make it, not what your stuck with.

Very preliminary plans here so much is subject to change. Splurged on land -- paid about 50% over planned, but got the land at 66% off original 1.2 million list. Since it is paid for, it is no longer a consideration. Probable Splurges: Interesting ceilings in main living area (not sure what yet) and 9' elsewhere on main floor. Maybe a nana wall (or similar) between kitchen and deck to maximize light (only natural light directly in the kitchen). Integrated plaster walls (although that may not end up being much of a spurge over good Sheetrock finish) because it is common in comparable new builds in the area (and not advertised as an upgrade). Large covered decks. Back if house -- Living room, deck and MBR will be cantilevered with basement patio below. ( probably not complete cantilever because it will be supported by stone columns) Nice fencing, but because the back yard is small, we won't need too much of it. Radiant hot water in floor heat throughout (again not much of a splurge because SIL in the business). Exterior must be 1/3 natural stone. Probably a nice chandy for the dining area, but the rest can be pretty basic. 8' doors in main living area. Undecided: windows, definitely want efficiency, but I can work with standard sizes; cabinetry and countertops, want nice and soft close, but flexible on wood type and finishes. Last time we shopped for granite for the ski house even though we budgeted for class 4, we found we really liked a class 2 stone better. Save: flooring (2) hardwood floors don't have to be anything special -- I have seen many midrange that I like, tile, again I have seen midrange options. I like. Carpet in bedrooms, office, closet and staircase except to the first landing because the rest is enclosed. Simple trim work (but also a splurge a bit t be sure it is beefy enough) Plumbing fixtures, I prefer simple and basic. Appliances -- been there, done that, on higher end appliances and really, I see no real advantage over my 10,000 range at home and my 2,500 one at the ski house and I cook a lot both places. Pantry storage will cost much less and pantry counters (as wll as laundry room can even be Formica. No fancy shower heads. No AC -- it's only needed a few days a year in our climate and we can survive without it. Upstairs guest room can have 8' ceilings. Of course, all this is subject to change -- we are waiting for the next plan revisions before we really start sourcing.

The exterior materials of window parts play a big role in price and performance but it's dangerous making assumptions based on material alone. I tend to agree with JDS that poor quality vinyl should be avoided and phased out. There are high quality vinyl windows available that come with factory finished dark colors and can still outperform the aluminum clad or fiberglass competition. Energy performance is mostly about the installation, IGU or glass package and the window unit's airtightness. Be sure you are meeting 2012/2015 energy codes when it comes to U-value, SHGC and the blower door test results that windows and doors so heavily impact. It might be cost-effective to beat code here. Double hung or sliding door and window styles tend to be the least efficient when it comes to energy performance. Longevity or durability is mostly about installation and how the various window unit parts were assembled. Materials and finishing processes matter but probably less than the window maker's reputation. Thanks to the many homeowners and professionals on this forum for providing feedback with this all-important quality. The biggest problem with most vinyl is that it expands and contracts much more than the glass parts. This can wear out the seal between frame and glass more compared to other choices. I think most vinyl windows use weep systems to handle the eventual leakage, a good thing but concerning when preventing unwanted air and water entry are two of the biggest unspoken goals when building.

"....it's only 16 years old". Hmmmm. Is this sheet vinyl, vinyl tiles or first generation vinyl planks? At 16 years old, I would say your floor has hit the end of the road. Certain situations in the home environment will reduce the longevity of a floor. Some of it has to do with environmental controls. Some of it has to do with the material chosen. Some of it has to do with the type of install (full spread glue down vs. perimeter glue down). And some of it has to do with the subfloor....other issues might have to do with maintenance (cleaning schedule and materials used). If you add up all the "little" things that reduce the life of a floor, you can achieve a floor that has "died" 10 years before it "should". Many floors have a 20 - 25 year life span. Some vinyls used to have a 15 - 20 year life span. It all depends on what you started out with. I would say it is time to have it all dealt with...right now. If you want to keep the bathroom and the cupboards to save yourself $200 - $500, then feel free to keep 16 year old vinyl that will fail in the next 5-10 years. As for floor heights regarding the carpet, only you can decide what you want to do. It sounds like the vinyl was raised so that it sat at the same height as the carpet. This is common - carpet is often 1/2" or higher where as lino and vinyl are 3mm (1/8") at best. I would say it is time to look at dealing with everything. The product is most likely beyond repair. Even if you repaired it, you would pay several hundreds of dollars just to get another 3-5 years out of it. Those hundreds of dollars would go a LONG way in purchasing and installing new flooring. We went with Mannington Adura Trulock vinyl plank flooring in spalted maple. It is click together...no gluing or nailing needed.

We've had it about a year and LOVE IT. It is not hard to stand on and has held up beautifully. It looks like new.

We wouldn't hesitate to purchase it again.

We actually have Duraceramic vinyl tiles in our bathrooms. It's grouted and has held up very well!!! I would do the again. They are warmer than ceramic, and not as hard.

We used metroflor-appalachian series...it is glued. We love it...have hsd for 2 years and with 2 boys and 2 large dogs is holding up beautifully.

My Mom (in her 80's) had her kitchen totally remodeled in Sept 2012. After they tore out the old 1970s floor, she had a very smooth subfloor put in and then had full glue Armstrong Cushionstep Best sheet vinyl in Peruvian Slate- Pebble Beige installed. Her cabinets are a honey maple and her counters are Silestone Halley.

The floor has held up beautifully! It is super easy to maintain, looks beautiful and feels nice under foot. She is very happy with it! My Dad can be a little messy, so ease in cleaning and durability was a given. They both love the floor and wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

Thanks! I think I am finding I like the vinyl tiles the best but I am not opposed the the sheets. So many choices!

I definitely want a lighter color and the ones that look like travertine or marble are really lovely - especially the titles. Tarkett has some of those that are really pretty.

I have "luxury" vinyl planks from Starloc as a floating floor over 20 year old vinyl in my kitchen; they were installed about a year ago.

They've held up to a boisterous dog's nails and enough of my abuse. A corner of one of the planks is slightly peeled up-- it's tiny, but I can sometimes feel it with my foot if I catch it right- don't know where that came from. I dropped a drill loaded with a bit, and the bit broke on the floor and caused a bit of damage- you can't see it necessarily due to the pattern, but can feel it if you walk over it. Stuff happens. I'm happy with it- it meets expectations for the price I paid and the quality of product I bought.
