What size table for my banquette?

Hello -- we are in the midst of a total kitchen renovation in our 1918 bungalow. We've gutted the room completely -- down to the studs on the walls, and even had to remove the flooring and the ceiling to address structural issues! At one point you could stand at the doorway to the kitchen and see down into the basement and up to the ceiling of our daughter's room above! However, things are coming back together and I'm starting to dream of the details. Our cabinetmaker is building us a corner banquette (finally an eat-in kitchen!). We need to buy or have made a new kitchen table, but I can't figure out how big it should be. The banquette will be L shaped. I'm sure there is a formula out there to help us figure this out, but I can't find it. Anyone have any advice?

I hope you're having fun! The table should be at least 30" wide and allow for 24-30" long per person. We mocked up 30" and 24" for each person, and the 30" seemeed much more comfortable especially for haning out. Don't forget to have him slant the back. On page 26 of Tuanton's "Build like a pro: Remodeling a Kitchen" is a side bar on the "Geometry of booths".

Also, you should really get a trestle table so to give people room to "scoot in" -- especially around the corner.

As a very general rule, allow 24" of linear space for every seating area as a minimum. To get an "L" shape, you'll probably have to go with a custom table you will have to commission. One other consideration...width should generally not be wider than 48" as it makes it difficult for diners to pass food across to one another without leaving their seat. I've taken a lot of cr@p for doing what you're wanting to do. My scale is a bit smaller though. See the unusual spot in the island? That's where my banquette will go. A bench against the island seating two with a half circle-ish shaped pedestal table and two chairs. We had a banquette for our kitchen table in the old space and I knew I wanted to work in a kitchen table spot in the new kitchen. I couldn't make a space large enough on the perimeter for a table during our whole house reno so got a crazy burr in my bonnet to inset the banquette in the island. Many here think I'm nuts, and I think one of the reasons I haven't finished the area 14 months later is because I am doubting my vision now. DH works for a restaurant supply company so has a custom booth maker ready to build this for us. I told Marcolo if it didn't work after it was done, I would just never post a pic and would live in shame forever. We'll see......

How big is your banquette going to be? I think a pedestal table is the way to go, if that will fit your usual crowd. We are planning our banquette around our 54" glass round top pedestal table. In fact, if anyone else has a similarly-sized table, what are the dimensions of your banquette? I just saw in the Ballard Designs catalog a freestanding corner bench (about $1,000) -- do any of you with banquettes have views on the pros and cons of such a thing?

I've always referenced this graphic. It recommends the table overlaps the bench seat by 4-5". You'll need a 113-115" trestle or double pedestal table.
