I got a chance to practice portrait stuff on my girlfriends cousins kids....let me know your honest critique!!!

Well, I know nothing about shooting people professionally, Ash, but, I like.

#1 and 2: The child's head is backlighted and the face dark. Could have used a fill in light or flash.

#3: Not good

#4: OK. The background is difuse and does not detract from the subject, a good technique.

#5: Just ok.

#6: Lighting problem. The face is the main subject and it is too indistinct. Could have made use of fill-in light or reflector. This is a difficult lighting situation. If you expose for the face, the background will be a white-out and will probably ruin the feeling of the photo. You are correct in positioning your subjects such that the bright sun does not cause them to squint and be uncomfortable, but as shown by these shots, you have to somehow deal with the resulting lighting.

Hi. I looked at all your photos. #1: You seem to understand the conflict between the pond and safe play. Children are magnetically attracted to water. Can you let the pond go dry? Maybe you love it, but it's not easily containable for safe play. Also, maybe you love it, but it's in an awkward location. If you are serious about improving the usable area of the yard, maybe it's time for the pond to go; create a more cohesive design with provision to include a water feature in a better location in the future, when the boy is older. the area directly fronting the "sitting pergola" seems a good area for installation of a small play structure that may be underlaid with rubber padding. #2 "Nice looking" -- from what the photos reveal, this will not be difficult for you. #3 The silly drop in the fence doesn't need remediation for safety or use of the garden. Maybe it's not the best feature of your garden, but it's not harmful, nor is it unsightly. #4 Entertaining, sitting, cooking outside. I see a covered BBQ and I see a deck with a (non-operable?) hot tub. If you can part with it, be rid of the hot tub in favor of using the lovely deck for dining. Or, expand the brick area near the BBQ to cover the pond and improve that region for seating. #5 Select the sunniest part of the yard and build a couple of raised beds for your veggies.

ThatÂs a very nice, organized little garden you have. Give it some time. Most vegetables take a couple of months or more to produce. Patience is what gardening has taught me. Although that fence is providing wind protection, it may be shading your plants too much. They need AT LEAST 6 hours of sun. The more, the better. The exception is lemon balm which likes the shade. You may want to gently move the peppers and tomatoes back into pots if theyÂre not too big and try a container garden that can be moved to a sunnier spot in your yard. You may also want to invest in a moisture meter (Home Depot or Lowes usually has them). How much water they need depends upon how much light, heat and wind exposure your plants get. Also, IÂve seen many forum members on various sites complaining about chilly spring weather. That may have slowed growth. Tomatoes (and peppers) donÂt like cold weather. IÂd take it easy on the fertilizer until theyÂre a bit bigger. Too much ferts can fry a seedling. Good luck!

Hiya Tomato and all, Thanks for the links and candidate ID's! Sorry it took a couple of days to reply--it's been a hellacious week at work. I'm really looking forward to spending some time in the garden this weekend (despite the chill in the air). Anyway, I think you're correct about the Shamel ash ID, thanks. I thought it looked like an ash, but didn't realize that Shamels were evergreen in the low desert. This plant certainly has been evergreen. My old work had some nice ash trees nearby but they were (are) deciduous and always dropped their leaves. I guess my little mystery plant is a self sown Shamel ash, thanks again. I'd better relocate it ASAP then as it's right on the edge of the patio Thanks again, tomato, gardeners are so generous with information, I'm always learning something every time I log in here. If he wore it here in Santa Cruz, CA he would probably have paint throw on it. They are really anti fur here. I can see that for exotic animals but mink are just rodents raised for their fur. My Mom had a mink stole when I was growing up. I loved to just pet it. I now have a teddy bear made out of mink fur. Clare

Number 5 is my favorite, I like the pose, expression and lighting.
I agree you need a fill flash if the sun is behind them, Andy.
Very cute kids, for sure, they make great models!

I too like number 5 the best, a neat angle! Yes, I use fill flash outdoors, it does help.

do you use the onboard flash, or an attachment? i tried my onboard on a few shots and it looked too weird....light coming from the back, and a lit up face looked way unnatural...

You can enhance all of those photos using a computer program if so desired, but I like them the way they are.

Nah, didnt try that Joan...im such a noob to people photography that it didnt occur to me....hardly EVER use the flash...

Oh well....they're young....I'll have more practice! :)

Wouldn't diffuse flash works well in this backlit situation?
It should bright up the face but not giving the flat look of a direct flash, is that right?

I've also seen my friends using external flash detached and hold it to the side in order not to get direct flash.

By the way, I just bought one of those diffuse box to put over the pop up flash. It works great and soften the light a bit too.
