want a traditional AND modern white kitchen, help!

My house have lots of traditional elements in it,a totally modern kitchen won't fit in, but I love the modern look. To put the two things together, what elements should I pick?

So far, I decide on using IKEA lidingo white cabs, a dark concrete countertop, stainless steel appliance, and want to pick a really modern staight line stainless steel hood. One thing really bugs me is I like the look of glass door cabs on each side of the hood,but lidingo glass cabs door has mullions (is this the right way to describe it??) or panels, quite traditional, will this glass door looking right next to a real modern stainless hood? Can't picture it. :(

Just say, it will look weird, my next quesions is can I find a glass door with no mullions and has the same color as the lidingo white, with frosted glass??

And sink! what kind of sink will give a subtle modern vibe? Have no clue, suggestions please.

Then, finally, what backsplash should I pick to pull everything together, even more clueless here.

Quickly, I love (really love) your vision.

1) Get the IKEA door. You can remove the interior panel and have your local glass shop put in any sort of glass (patterned, clear, etc.) your heart desires. You are NOT restricted to IKEA's choices.

2) What about a stainless apron front sink? You get the traditional shape but with a more modern, "industrial" material. ???

3) Your backsplash can wait. Let all the other pieces come together, and then trust your eye about what else your kitchen needs.

Can't wait to watch your kitchen come together!

some additional details of my kitchen: my home is an apartment in an 125+ year-old 11 story brownstone landmark building that has a traditional and complex exterior. i chose traditional cabinets in spirit of the building's original design and chose pearl white as the base to contrast my other aspirations for the modern and efficient. i had a tough but fun time researching and purchasing everything myself (down to the Hubbell electrical receptacles). it was not easy settling on the statuary white marble and i kept worried about staining and etching. to the full credit of discussions in the Garden Web kitchen forum, i've gained enough confidence and courage to go for what i really want : ) the Emeco Kong stools were love at first sight for me in a furniture store. they are military grade and almost entirely handmade of recycled aluminum. i wasn't sure how they would complement my kitchen. but being the reckless hothead that i am, i bid the bullet...as the whole apartment renovation was a dizzying dose of self-indulgence.

I agree with Pam about the function things, but, at least where I live, having the kitchen fit the style of the house, aesthetically, will have the greatest visual appeal. Make the whole house cute! Use the original kitchen as a style cue. Sochi phrased the plea not to lose the MCM as personal--I'll extend it to the rentability. Renters want function function function since there's nothing they can do about anything. Having the whole house read as a single style makes it so much easier to furnish and live in, and makes the house make sense to the renters when they're walking through while it's empty. I've lived in a '30's beauty of a rental with an unadorned, clean '70's kitchen, which wasn't bad. It was all function, white slab cabinets, white tile, and newish appliances. The kitchen had no charm but had lots more function than the '30's kitchen would. Lots of cabinets. Separate cooktop and ovens. Garbage disposer and dishwasher. So that was fine, if unexciting. The rest of the place was really cute, and had the original hardwood floors and walk-in closets, plus original tile and huge tub in the bathroom. Then there was the early '60's place with the panelled wall in the living room, panelled den with built-ins, and pink kitchen. Original, very clean, appliances. It was cute! The whole house was cute. The original kitchen, with it's display cabinet peninsula was cute. The panelling was a bit of a gulp, but it was clean and unmarked, and went so well with the style of the house. My furniture looked just fine. And the kitchen was very functional, other than too wide an aisle. Lots of cabinets, and more in the laundry room. Okay, as a former renter? LOTS OF CABINETS!! That's the ticket to pleasing a renter. And cute. Renters want the place to look like something. Keep that MCM thing going. Anyway, slab cabinets are easier to clean between renters. :) I also have experience from the landlord perspective (including surveying the competition), which also says that closets and cabinets are worth extra $$$, but generally, you'll get your rent based on location, pleasantness of surroundings, space, upkeep and storage. Utterly bland will rent at full price. Too much character (e.g., mauve walls or anything "weird") won't rent well, but a little style with neutral colors goes a long way.

I went back and forth on this too. At first I was afraid the polished nickel would be too 'shiny' but instead it brightens the area and goes well with our SS appliances. If you don't have cabs in yet - wait. No need to hurry this decision. Are you doing SS appliances? I think that makes a difference too. Everyone's kitchen (materials, lighting, etc) is unique. So go get a few you both like and put them up next to YOUR cabinets in YOUR kitchen. We're mixing it up a little... On top of the granite (dark) we're going with satin (brushed)nickel - ie. faucets, soap, airswitch. The pulls are polished nickel (on light creamy grey cabinets) Glass knobs with polished nickel accents will go on the upper glass cabinets. Best of luck and ENJOY! Erica, this is not just decorating advice, but life advice. If you care a lot about decorating, and you are not going to be happy living with that table for the rest of your married life, then find a nice way to say "NO" now. Or negotiate an end-date. Getting sentimental over something like that table, which is not an antique, not a family heirloom, is something that is in your marriage's best interest to nip in the bud now. I'm speaking from experience. You know what's worse than taking in a table that your partner is sentimental about? Telling him years later that you want to get rid of it. Because now he's going to be even more attached. That said, if you want to accommodate someone's sentimental feelings about giant pieces of furniture, congratulations! You are definitely a better human being than I am! If it's just a place-holder until such time as a table with a style you both like can be acquired, then it is going to be very nice to get that table.

Here's a Lidingo kitchen with some modern elements. With Lidingo, I think a curved hood like this might look better than a flat hood-- it's softer.

Thank you, rmkitchen! About the glass door, can the white panel be taken off too? I mean the grid which divide the glass into 6 little squares?? If this can be done, that will be great, one big problem solved! I was thinking about stainless apron front sink, but it will be next to a stainless front DW, will this be too much stainless? Should I get a white DW? Though, I'd love to keep all the applance the same color. I guess the backsplash can wait, though it would be nice to have some ideas. :))

I wouldn't just assume that you can remove the center panel to insert glass. I happen to have a Lidingo door right here, and it is *not* traditional frame-and-panel construction. The back is entirely smooth. Maybe the door started life as a thick panel and was routed to create the door design?

I'm not sure whether you can remove the panel from a Lidingo glass door, though. Maybe so.

Mandy, if you want a frosted glass upper, use the Avsikt door. It has an aluminum edge, though.

I don't think the glass or the mullions can be removed from Ikea doors.

I am getting a Ticor zero-radius sink for my kitchen. We had it in our other house and it was really great. galaxytoolsupply carries them.

Ooh...I love that Lidi white kitchen morton5 posted. Simple, clean, and modern, but with touches of warmth from the floor...and I like the mullions, too!
