Any stress on the plants can cause the misshaped cucs. It could even be incomplete pollination. I typically see more of that discription as the plants age. If the incidence is very high then it is usually time to yank the plants. Don't take my statement as an indication of doom. Likely cooler (or very hot) weather caused a problem when the first fruits were developing. I've been picking for a few weeks now from tunnel grown cukes and Just wanted to point out that the first few weeks always yield a very low percentage of misshaped cucs. Just expect more imperfect cucs as your season progresses and plants age.

Glad to hear everything went well with your surgery! You are much more better behaved than I was, but then again didn't have spinal surgery either! This year my toms took off fast and it was cooler even this April/May then last year. I saw my first gulf frit yesterday and released my third anise swallowtail yesterday as well. I was so excited because some years I don't see any gulf frits at all and last year I was thrilled when in July I saw a female gulf frit laying eggs on my passionvine, or at least what was left of it because I had just cut it severely back because it was taking over some pipe vine and I hadn't seen any gulf frits to speak of in a couple of years. In fact, I had just cut it back again earlier this week since I never expected to see one for a long while. When will I learn to be a bit more patient? But things look promising. Murray
