Would you like soft cookies or crispy cookies? I have a recipe for soft sugar cookies and one with cream cheese that makes a crunchy cookie with great flavor.

That recipe doesn't look like it has enough liquid, a few tablespoons of milk might save it....

Nancy/WizardNM started a post for Holiday Cookie recipes. On there she posted a recipe for cream cheese cookies to be used for cut outs. That's the recipe I'll be using this year for my cutout cookies.

Btw, your recipe looks like a typical glorified shortbread recipe. That can be quite a bit of flour for that butter in order to make them roll, but it could also be that the butter wasn't soft enough and/or creamed enough with the sugar. In any case, Nancy's recipe is a tried and true so I'd try that one.

I'm sure everyone has their favorite, but this is the one that's worked best for me. You don't have to chill the dough, and the cookies don't spread, so they keep their shape (and taste good too.)

o 1 cup butter
o 1 cup sugar
o 1 large egg
o 2 teaspoons baking powder
o 1 teaspoon vanilla
o 2 3/4 cups flour

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a large bowl cream butter and sugar together with electric mixer; Beat in egg and vanilla. Mix flour and baking powder. Adding 1 cup at a time, combine ingredients after each addition. (You will need to add last 3/4 cup by hand. Do not chill the dough as it will be stiff.) Divide the dough into 2 balls. On a floured surface, roll dough out to 1/8 inch thickness. Using any cookie cutter, cut out cookies and bake for 6-10 minutes or until light brown.

MJR....add a little milk to your crumbly dough....the recipe I use is pretty much the same one but calls for 2 T milk...and it does make a difference.
Flour is so variable...that it can oftem make a crumbly dough...I don't add flour to measure...but until it feels right...soem times a little more sometimes a little less.

Hi everyone. I'd like to share my sugar cookie recipe. They're simple to make, and everyone raves about them:

Sugar Cookies

2 cups flour
1 ý tsp. baking powder
ý tsp. salt
þ cup soft margarine
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup sugar
2 eggs

Mix flour, baking powder & salt. Mix everything else but eggs (add them one at a time). Mix with flour. Chill 2 hours. Roll, cut and cook at 375ú for 10 minutes.

The recipe sounds fine to me. Try adding the milk like Linda suggested and work it in with your hands.

Did you use a food processor to mix the dough?

thanks everyone. i like the shortbread type cookies as they are always very tasty and hold up well. i had a recipe for aunt doe's shortbread cookies which i got here on this site.

I always thought sugar cookies were pretty tasteless until I tried this recipe from Taste of Home:

Prep: 15 min. + chilling Bake: 10 min./batch
Ingredients

* 1 cup butter, softened
* 1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese, softened
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 egg yolk
* 1/2 teaspoon Spice Islandî Pure Vanilla Extract
* 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
* 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
* Tinted frosting or colored sugar

Directions

* In a bowl, cream butter, cream cheese and sugar. Beat in egg yolk
* and extracts. Combine the flour, salt and baking soda; gradually
* add to creamed mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 3 hours or until
* easy to handle.
* On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8-in. thickness.
* Cut with a 2-1/2-in. cookie cutter dipped in flour. Place 1 in.
* apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 375ð for 8-10 minutes
* or until edges begin to brown. Cool for 2 minutes before removing
* from pans to wire racks. Decorate as desired.
Yield: 4 dozen.

They are tender in the center and melt in your mouth!

I'll share my jam rings recipe. Easy to make and pleasure to eat. This is a recipe from year 1936.

thanks everyone for your input. I remade the dough tonight using my kitchen aid mixer and OMG....what a difference. The dough is beautiful.

So, the moral of thes story is to use the kitchen aid whenever making these cookies!
