Not very Good Thanksgiving This Year,

We were joking yesterday,I had lapband surgery in April so I can get kidney transplant.I love thanksgiving.I guess put turkey,stuffing in blender,have creamed turkey.....Im cooking dinner too this year.

Why would you have to have blendered chicken? i know at least 6 people who have had lap band surgery within the past year and they all are eating real food after a week or so.
Just eat tiny bites...I can't imagien cooking and not being able to taste what I am cooking.

This little sacrifice will be more than worth it in the long run. Keep saying that over and over again. Just think of the weight you will lose and then the life saver -the kidney transplant. I think once you get your mind wrapped around it, you will not have a problem at all. By the way, could you just chew up a couple of bites of each item so you get the full flavor then spit them out into a bag? I think I'd be willing to do that. My prayers are with you.

Thanksgiving memories '50s and'60s Mom had seven sisters and brothers each with their own kids. Grandma's house was the go to place for Thanksgiving dinner. The yard was about an acre it seemed and three quarters of it was garden. Corn in the back row, beans and peas, potato hills and squash, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, turnips, onions and much more. Rhubarb and ground cherry bushes were around the front edge. The chicken house was full and eggs were plentiful. All of this bounty went into Ball jars and ended up on the shelves in the root cellar. We drove from Urbandale to Shellrock the day before or early that morning. Cherries and apples from our yard were packed and brought along to make pies. Velma, our Mom, Dora, Marlys, Leola, Margaret and Roberta were vying for their spots in the kitchen under the eye of Grandma Lena. It was a very busy kitchen. There would be as many as twenty kids out playing games in the yard while the men watched the football games. Some of us would pick ears of corn and peas right from the garden to munch, mmm so good. Some years we would head to a local pond and fish with our red and white bobbers on bamboo poles. Grandma had a huge round oak table that could be extended with three centre boards. the dining room was the largest room in the house with a coal burning stove. There were two or three card tables set up for the kids and a side board to hold the food dishes that would not fit on the table. Some of us kids were put to work setting the tables. The smells from the kitchen were overwhelming by this time and the men would try to get tastes of favourites as they wandered in to the kitchen for another Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. They could be charming when entering the Women's domain to steel treats. When we all sat down to eat the conversation would be about what had happened in the last year with each family. We were the furthest away and learning these bits of news was always interesting. The meal would linger for an hour at least or more then the older kids would have the job of cleaning up the table and washing the dishes. Men would retreat to to living room for more football while the women took over the dining room to continue the family news. The latest knitting or needle work was passed around while all the kids lives were reviewed. Napping was in order for those affected by the triptophan then the local families would return home. we usually stayed over night and left the next morning as the drive was long. Have had and been to a few Thanksgiving days since but none on the scale of the ones I so fondly remember. We make our own memories of special events as we progress through our lives with new friends family and acquaintances. Make the best of your holiday this week and savour the experience. Hiya, Denise. It gets regularly down to the low 40's. In 25 years, I've seen frost on the ground maybe 7 or 8 times. Some years, thats because I'm not up 'early' enough. Having your kids grow up is good! Vera, long time no talk! How is college going? My son is back home, going to trade school, and has a girl friend. Very Big Doings for him. That kerrii variagate should look familiar. That is the SLOOOOOOOWEST growing plant I own. H. austrailus is growing up the tree as we speak. H. pubicalyx is wending its way through. H. obovata is starting to thread its way. You saw what the kerrii had done. My carnosa I seem to keep moving just enough to keep it from permanent lodgings. Thankfully! H.c. Krimson Princess is heading north, AND setting buds. I just have to add the vine that is reverting is setting buds oh, so much quicker. I really was chuckling and doing the Happy Dance, until I stepped up on the ladder and figured otu that lead was growing so quickly, and setting buds so quickly because it was ALL GREEN!!! But, there are little 'microphones' all about the place. Now I just have to develope patience, and a belief they will get the job done before it cools too much... I've had a bit of difficulty with something that lays eggs that hatch into worms, that poop pink, after eatting mostly pink flowers for however long until I discover them. Krinkle 8 is terribly susceptible to these, and I would REALLY like to know who/what they are?! This year, I've had a lot of butterflies and moths just taking advantage, left and right. But I DO like the G. fritterlaries.

But what this 170,000-square foot facility on Choctaw Drive doesn't have as the holidays start is food. The situation has gotten bad enough that the charity, which serves an 11-parish area, is putting out public calls for extra help, for extra donations of food, and especially for money to purchase additional food. High-profile disasters, including hurricanes Florence and Michael, as well as the ongoing wildfires in California, have diverted the supply of donated food as well as drawn away cash donations that might ordinarily have gone to help hungry people locally at Thanksgiving and Christmas. “You would ordinarily see all of these shelves full,” said Mike Manning, pointing to two tall, long and nearly empty stretches of metal shelving at the rear of the facility. These shelves is where the the charity normally stores its dry, canned and staple foods. Manning, president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, said instead he is flush with candy, a relic of the Halloween holiday, pointing to a big box of M&M bags. “We’ve got a lot of candy,” Manning said. “That’s not what we need.” About 30 volunteers, several of them employees of ExxonMobil, were on hand Monday sorting donated canned food. Many people brought their families. The empty shelves are not visible from their work area. Katie Skiles volunteered on Monday with her father Joe and brother, James, but she said she has worked there by herself since she first volunteered more than a year ago. “My parents made me come,” Katie said. “Now I love it.” A senior at Lee High in Baton Rouge, Katie, 17, said she was not aware of the food shortage. She said she might talk to the National Honor Society at her high school about doing a food drive. The warehouse currently has about 1 million pound of food in its inventory, about half of the normal inventory, Manning said. One million pounds of food is also roughly what the food bank distributes each month to its 100-plus member agencies, he said. And to top it all off, this is normally a time of peak inventory, when the food banks stock up in order to have sufficient supply for the early months of the year. “I’ve never see it this bad going into the holidays,” Manning said. Besides recent disasters and the resulting “donor fatigue,” another food supply factor is the shrinking donations over time from commercial grocers who carry less excess inventory than they used to, Manning said. To help restock, the food bank has asked local schools to do special food drives. What would help most, though, are cash donations, which people can donate online on the charity’s website, Manning said. “We are kind of held hostage by the national situation, unless we can get sufficient money to purchase food,” he said. It doesn’t necessarily take much money to help. Manning pointed to palettes full of canned vegetables without labels on them. These cans, when they have commercial labels, cost 70 to 90 cents a can at the store, but without the labels, they cost the food bank between 5 and 10 cents a can. Manning said he’s talking about having a more formal fund drive around New Years to raise money, but he’s been too busy to pull together anything more formal sooner. “We’re in firefighting mode right now,” he said. “We’re just asking for help.”

For sure I want to get rid of the rug. It is just an old indoor-outdoor garage sale rug that I just threw down to have something. The print over the fireplace is an Andrew Wyeth and is special to me and I will definitely keep it. I want new rugs for both the couch area and dining area. Maybe some throws/pillows to warm up the green furniture, new lamp and something in that empty corner....maybe wall shelves? I'm up in the air about wall decor. You guys are really helpful.

I'm sorry to hear that you'll be "off your feed" over the holidays, but I agree with bcskye: this will be worth it in the long run.

Depending on whether you're really able to eat anything by Thanksgiving, it can be fun being creative with traditional holiday flavors: maybe a turkey, Brussels sprouts and sweet potato soup (with plenty of fresh sage) that you could eat a few bites of, etc.

Good that you had the surgery in able to prepare yourself for a transplant. I hope you have seen good results since April. I know someone that had a different type of stomach surgery. She can eat pretty much anything......just really small amounts.

Happy Thanksgiving! Hard to believe it's just around the corner.

I've had three secretaries have surgery to lose weight. One eats pretty much whatever she wants, but in small amounts. The other two can't eat sugar or very much fat, and eat small amounts regularly.

Hopefully by Thanksgiving you'll be able to eat at least a little bit of dinner.

Good for you for taking the necessary steps toward that transplant. I'll be saying lots of prayers for you for success.

Well first I should say Im on dialysis 3xs a week,no one in our area that the drs know of had lapband and dialysis same time even Hershey medical center so its watch and see.They told us at class there will be things I cant eat and the next person will, I have problems with chicken.I had a fill Thursday can only eat like 3 bites thats it.

I'm sorry to hear about that, bulldinkie, but I agree with bcskye too about "keeping your eye on the prize" -- very few things are more precious than good health (maybe nothing). Maybe you can just chew the food very long and thoroughly and really savor it. I think this is what we're supposed to do anyway (not that I do!) It will also digest faster so that you can eat more food!

Bulldinkie, where in Pa are you--you mention Hershey Med, so maybe not too far from me. Sonopoy is so on target--health is number one, so do what you have to do. But let me know--Ma Williams ever-so-excellent cream of turkey soup, flavored with thyme/parsley/sage from my herb garden could be on the way.

Oh dear, bulldinkie, you sure have a lot going on. As other members have said, your good health is worth everything you're going through now, so that you can look forward to Thanksgivings for years to come.

Stay strong, remember this is temporary, you just have to get healthy first!

This kidney thing was hereditary.I found out when I was 18 when my mother died,Ive been doctoring since I was 18.The dr said I would die by 40,Im 55.Ive been thru soo much,for so long I know where Im going.
