Pasta Shapes, what do you call them?

So many shapes and sizes of pasta out there.

We've called them so many different 'pet' names. For instance, Penne Pasta has been dubbed "finger noodles" by my son when he was little.

Spaghetti is known as long noodles.

Rotini is known as culy, twisty noodles.

BUT today I came across the cutest name for bowtie pasta - Butterflies!

Ya know? If you look at it, it really does resembly a butterfly!

So..... what do you call your pasta shapes that is different than most call theirs?

My son calls Rotini "scribble-scrabble noodles." ;-)

When our kids were little they couldn't remember all the names so everything around here was called "macaroni" no matter what shape showed up on the table! We've continued the tradition; but now it's with the g-kids. :)

I have heard folks in Texas complain about the wild ones there. Don't know about Savannah, but here near Atlanta the seedlings are only occasional (I've seen maybe two total) and, unlike what texasflip says, they are vastly outcompeted by Ligustrum here. It makes sense, perhaps, that the warmer climate of Savannah might make them more common like Texas. FYI, distinguished from chinese privet (ligustrum) on sight because Ligustrum has opposite leaves and Ilex (holly) has alternate leaves. True boxwood (Buxus) has opposite leaves.

Calling all gas powered pasta lovers

I am more interested in heating coffee water for my wife in the morning. We just switched to gas for the control, but I was surprised how much slower gas (propane in our case) is. with electric, I barely had time to stagger around and find the Milita bottom or a cup, coffee, filter top holder, filter, coffee and equal; then grind the coffee and load it before the water was whistling up a storm. With the new kitchenaid gas cooktop, I can also give the dogs a bisquit, unload the dishwasher, and feed the dogs before I get a gentle whistle, that at least I can turn down immediately. I had never heard of duel fuel tops but it sounds great.

I have 4 "wall pocket" type pieces that I purchased from a local artist about 10 years ago. The artist called her pieces "flower slippers". I actually put real plants in them. They only hold a small amount of dirt but the plants have been growing in them for years. I believe I have only changed out the plants once. I am not really a plant person so I don't know the names of the plants but they are succulents. You might be able to put dirt in you pieces and grow real plants in them as I have done.

Pill bugs, sow bugs, rolls polices what ever you call them?

I think you can only delete or edit original posts within the first hour, but no problem. About pill bugs, is there really a problem? From the link above: "Pill bugs can do some damage in the garden, specifically to young, newly planted transplants, but are rarely a problem where well-established plants are concerned. Pill bugs spend most of their time eating dead and decaying material in the garden. This is usually considered a good thing. My garden is full of them and my compost pile even more so. "The natural role of the pill bug is to eat dead and decaying things so they are actually helping things along in the compost pile. If you think pill bugs are eating your garden because you see them quite often, it may be the sneaky slug coming out after dark doing the damage." I grow mostly perennials and they are not damaged by pill bugs As for control around seedlings which they will eat 'Bug Bait' works well. Also there is a bug bait made with iron phosphate that's said to be natural, there's been complaints that it doesn't contain the bitter substance that keeps pets and children from eating it. You can also just leave them like I do. Their numbers will be much less when the ground dries out a little.

Hi There! I'm not a regular, but thought I'd chime in. The Italian name for what we call "bowtie" pasta is farfalle, which translates into English as butterfly. I've never understood why we call it bowtie rather than butterfly!

We had "Scroodles" or "Screwdoodles" and "Bisgetti" and "Tubes" and "Butterflies"

Whatever you call them, I love them all. It is all I can do in the grocery store these days to keep from buying one of each!

Bsgetti was what my brother called spaghetti, but I see he was't the only one!

I call them by the name on the box, I guess. My favorite is orecchiette, or little ears.

cannelloni little tubes
fettuccine little ribbons
linguine little tongues
manicotti pipes
mostaccioli little mustaches
orecchiette little ears
ravioli little turnips
rigatoni little stripes
spaghetti strings
tortellini little fritters
vermicelli little worms

One of my daughters called spaghetti "passgetti".

Meredith will sometimes still say bsgetti ! Bowties were "Butterflies", Egg noodles were "white sauce noodles" and elbow macaroni was "cheese noodles".

Like Tricia, we've just called it all macaroni. Except spaghetti, which we called spaghetti, LOL.

I don't remember ever in my childhood eating any kind of pasta except elbow macaroni and spaghetti. My girls never liked pasta very much either, except Ashley ate (and still does) Velveeta Shells and Cheese. Ick.
