Vintage Westbend Ovenette

I just brought home a vintage Westbend Ovenette from a yard sale...$4. I'd never seen one before, but they were apparently quite popular with folks cooking in Airstreams and other campers. Supposedly, it creates a small, stove top oven over a burner, capable of baking cakes, muffins or pies (tins come with) or roasting meats.

I've all the parts shown in the web-pic, but alas, not the recipe booklet.

I thought it might come in handy for camping trips, but also over my outdoor propane burner during the Summer months when I really hate to turn my oven on.

Any experiences with this set up? Recipes?

I have seen something like this being used by campers over a Coleman stove. I would check camp cooking sites.

Here's a link to the manual, though it's been uploaded a page at a time. Just right click on each link and "save link as" and save to your desktop.

    Enjoy

Wonderful! Thanks Momj! Nancy, that's a good idea about checking camp cooking sites, I'll have to search around.

I'm looking forward to playing with this. :D

Take pictures of whatever you make in it.

The Girl Scout in me would love to experiment with that!

    Score!

That is so neat, I would love one for our new camper. Heck it would be nice to use in the house during the summer so you don't have to heat up the house to make some muffins:)

Yeah, Stacie, I was thinking that...plus, the pans provided only make 7 muffins, which would be perfect as it's just my husband and me...as long as I have the right recipes.

I looked them up on ebay, and it seems I got quite the deal.

I'm thinking that with practice, it might also be good for those times when I'm trying to put a multi-dish meal on the table and suddenly realize that the required oven temps of one dish don't mesh with those of another.

All the pans fit nicely inside the main "oven" so I can see how it would be really good for the limited storage space most campers have.

It will be interesting to see how accurate (or inaccurate) the little temperature gauge on the top is. But heck, I've made perfectly good biscuits, cornbread and coffee cakes in a fry pan over a camp stove, so I guess I'll have fun with this too.
