recipe: looking for: easiest way to make caramel apples
Comments (3)If you have your heart set on dipping the apples, you won't want to try this. But for fall festivals at my church, we've sectioned the apples, then put them in a dish with the caramel on the side. Use one of those metal apple thingys that removes the core & cuts the sections at the same time. We've melted the caramels in a crockpot - takes a while, so you have to plan ahead. My sister is able to buy caramel in big slabs (4 or 8 lbs., I forget) at a craft store (dare I name it? - Ben Franklin) where she lives. That would save unwrapping the caramels. I prefer the taste of real caramels to the caramel dip you find next to the apples at the grocery store....See MoreAnyone have a below counter microwave near the stove?
Comments (5)I don't have a range, I have a cooktop, but I do have a 6" cabinet b/w the cooktop cabinet and my MW drawer. Ours is near a water source (prep sink) and the refrigerator. Most things we MW come from the refrigerator or freezer, so this makes the most sense for us. Here's a pic of my cooktop + 6" pullout cabinet + MW drawer. The cooktop is on the left and my spice pullout is b/w them. It could have been a tray cabinet instead, but I already have plenty of tray storage above my ovens. Here are both 6" cabinets that flank my cooktop. The pullout on the left holds baking sprinkles, food colors, etc. (The one on the right is the spice pullout I mentioned previously.) Hopefully this one shows the setup a little better:...See MoreMartha Stewart's Cream of Caramelized Onion Soup---Has Anyone Made It?
Comments (18)The onion soup I referenced above suggested using a combination of yellow and red onions, I get it is more visually appealing. The same could probably be done in the Martha Stewart recipe. ETA: I was just thinking about the caramelization of the onions and then looked at the recipe on the website and it confirmed for me what my problem with that soup would be. That muddy brown color to me in a cream soup is not appealing. A sprinkling of parsley would help some, but I am a visual eater and that color would be off-putting to me, no matter how good it tastes. Just something to think about if any in your group are similar....See MoreHas anyone built Southern Living’s/Mitchell Ginn’s Smythe Park House?
