Lights for Front Entrance, Over Garage, Post (Pics)

We bumped out the front of our house 5' last year and ended up with a new front door and front steps, among other things. I am turning now to outside lighting, would appreciate input on choices.

Here's a closeup:

The room to the left of the front door is DS's bedroom. My thoughts are to place sconces to the left and right of the door. There is 13'' of space on both sides. Lights would be on a dimmer and I'd prefer not to have too much light (so DS doesn't feel like he lives next to a runway).

Farther back:

I also need to add lighting between the garage doors, and on a post, farther down the driveway. I have struggled finding lights which match, which I like, for all three places.

(Landscaping is next... ignore large rhododendron, that will be moved this Spring).

Here's the post in a shot from the end of the driveway; how house used to look. Wow, seeing the pictures next to eachother for the first time, I feel like we've gone from Charming to Cold. Hopefully, it's just because the exterior is so bare looking. Other thoughts?

I'm also thinking that I don't need to match the front entrance fixtures to the others (because they are fairly far away), but will match the one mounted between the garage doors, and the post light.

At entranceway, should I match the door hardware with the fixture color?

What a nice addition to your home - you must be very happy to have all that extra space!

The only lights I like are the first ones. Two and four feel too modern. Three and six feel beach cottage to me. Five is craftsman.

Have you considered having lighting (like recessed lights of some kind) put in the overhang by the door, instead of trying to squeeze in lights on either side? I think it will do a better job of lighting the whole recessed entry, washing it in warm light.

Also wondered if you had considered adding shutters to the two lower windows on the left side, and perhaps a window box under the window on the right by the garage?

Thanks les917. With respect to light#1, should I go with the antique nickel (and try to match hardware of the door) or the warmer, oil rubbed finish?

Recessed, or overhead lighting is a possibility but I was concerned about too much light shining into the bedroom to the left. Did you really mean recessed (i.e., flush with ceiling)?

The windows on the left wing used to have shutters; these were removed during the renovation. I love the new trim work detail and am not sure we'll be adding shutters back. (Then again, they would be white, which would be a different look than before).

Gee, thanks everyone for all the kind words. Designing the room and the farmers porch was a lot of fun with the software. My contractor even had me print out copies to use for the permits. cady, you are right; I am sure I will actually save money on heating with the addition, because it is better insulated than the old house (even though there is blown-in insulation in all the old walls) and because those two, drafty plank doors are gone. They looked cool, but they were terribly inefficient and were not even used as entrances. As for a house tour, Id love to host anyone willing to drive all the way up here. With my travel schedule and location Im never able to attend all the great functions everyone coordinates on this forum (sniff). There are five bedrooms (and two barns), so plenty of crash space. August is the best garden show time up here, because all the big players e.g. phlox, rudbeckia, echinacea, heliopsis, etc, are in bloom. Unless everyone likes snowshoeing in the winter. claire, pokeberries I have in abundance. I should take some pics of them before they die back. Now, regarding cadys ideabeing a bachelor, I am intrigued by the idea of having a tarted-up hussy at the house, at least for a while. Is it possible to rent a variegated Artemisia? White wood asters sound nice. I have something that looks kind of like a faerie garden. There is a path off of the lawn through a copse of evergreen trees down to the pond. It is not very large, but it is kind of cool, with almost an enchanted feel. There is not much under the trees except for ferns and a few struggling brambles. Id love to add some woodland plants that could provide some interest and color. Any ideas? diggerdee, we dont have termites up here, but do have carpenter ants. The wood pile is now up on pressure-treated posts, so it is probably safer than it was when it sat right on the ground. But, I do spray around the house perimeter as a precaution. When we tore into the old walls, we found some evidence of carpenter ant activity, but it was not recent and didnt affect the integrity of the walls, fortunately. As for repair of an old house vs. a 1950s cape, Id have to say that they dont make them like this anymore. The house is pretty much built like a tank. Except for the fact that it is irregular in its measurements and has the original horsehair plaster on most walls, it is great to work on it. martinetct, your husband is totally spot on. One of the exterior walls (on the el that houses the kitchen and garage) was/is 2 ½ inches wider at the base than at the top. Try lining up trim against that. And, the floor in the kitchen slopes such that the new room is level through the French doors into the kitchen, but there is a 3 ½ in step up into the dining room (yet you dont notice it in the kitchen). The wall behind the farmers porch weaves like a drunken sailor, which made it fun to line up. And, of course, nothing is level and nothing is square. But, thats part of the fun and certainly part of the charm of an old house. As for the windows, they are Harvey replacements with the grill between the panes. Not practical to try to match the existing windows. When I bought the place all the storm windows were shot and all the main windows needed to be reglazed. I had the option of having the work done or just replacing the windows for the same price. I wanted to keep the look, so opted to have the old windows redone. But, even with the new storms, they are not very efficient. And, they are a royal pain to clean, they stick in the summer, some are missing hardware so dont stay open, and in general they are not fun. Now that weve put in these matching vinyl replacement windows that have a snug seal and that tilt in for cleaning with no grills to get in the way, I see how much easier they are to use and to maintain. Despite the cost, I think that, once I redo the kitchen (this winters project) I will bite the bullet and have all the windows replaced. True, they are real 12 over 12, but they are not original to the house (they are the kind that have the two metal buttons on the sides you push in to open and that lock into slots in the frame at two locations). There is only one place where there is original glass over the front door. The door is original and even has the bar across it to fend off attackers (as in "Katie bar the door") as well as the original skeleton key still in the lock. Over it are six small panes of glass. They are wavy and bubbly, and I believe have been there from the beginning. As for the original family being upstanding, yeah I think they had some money. The rooms are really big for a true colonial with the all the front rooms on both original levels being approx.15.5 x 14 feet and wainscoting pretty much everywhere. There are closets in almost every room, and if you remember that the British taxed houses based on the number of rooms and considered closets to be rooms, the owners either had a lot of money to spend, or, being in northern New England, just thumbed their noses at the British and figured no one would ever collect the tax from them. I prefer to believe the latter. I'll pass on your congrats to my contractor. I may come up with the ideas, but he does all the work. He was my house inspector, a carpenter, and it turned out he liked to work on old houses. We hit it off, and he has done all the improvements (or GC'd them) over the past few years. Another project I did not mention was one we did the first year I bought the place. It is a tradition that my entire family comes up for Thanksgiving two parents, sister, brother-in-law, six kidlings and a dog. It is an invasion on the scale of the Allied landing in Normandy with similar, if not greater, logistical requirements. Anyway, I needed places to put everyone and the house only had three bedrooms on the second floor (one space was converted years ago into a master bathroom, a guest bathroom and a laundry room). So, I talked it over with my contractor and we took that attic and converted it into a finished third floor. There are two bedrooms and a full bath with tub up there. It hardly ever gets used, except when my sister visits and we throw all the kidlings up there. We kept the massive roof beams exposed and used V pine for the ceiling. It looks pretty neat. We did get rid of the trap door to the roof, since it was covered anyway by the metal roof, and we also eliminated the musket holder in one of the windows that was there to steady the gun for plunking Indians or British, I assume. People have asked me if the house is haunted, especially since I live alone (not counting Cord, The Wonder Chow). I figure I am at least the 12th generation to live in it, so there is some history in the place. But, I have never been bothered by anyone or anything. Before I bought the place, it was in a state of semi-disrepair and no one had lived in it for a number of years. I figure that, when my whole family, from three to eighty two, is gathered around the dining room table for Thanksgiving laughing and talking, the house is happy. Anthropomorphic and stupid, I know. But, I feel like a steward and hope to eventually pass on the house in better condition than when I bought it and ready for another 200+ years. The concrete pillar things are weird... would it be possible to paint them same color as the brick (the mid red tone) to help them blend in to the background? And yes with the grey door and roof I think the brass looks out of place and silver tones will look better. And I think I'd go with black trim!

Selling the first set of purchases is no big deal and buying again is no big deal. Remodeling/refurbishing and ending up with less than you could have had for that paltry reason IMO would be...regrettable and unnecessary. (People often do that--design a $30K+ kitchen remodel around a refrigerator they happened to pick up on sale for $1200 at Home Depot. Or a sink from eBay that was too good a deal to pass up.) A nice thing about small kitchens is that everything can be wonderful close and available. I love that your refrigerator is only a step away from everything. And since you're actually quite happy with other issues, I think you're wise to...be happy with them. I just want to say that if THIS issue of centering the sink has been such a wishing and hoping one for you--you probably really should move it back to an "is." Where it would fall on others' priority lists is irrelevant if it matters to you, and you can find a way to have both that and a layout sufficiently efficient to please you if you work at it. Nobody who explains how the relationship of storage to DW should optimally be would ever have suggested my layout. (Confession--I knew what I wanted would require considerable deviation from optimal patterns, so I never posted for suggestions that wouldn't get me what I wanted.) My version of a centered sink was windows--lots of them--instead of upper storage cabinets. Putting the DW on the end of an L counter (and no, I was not relocating everything to change that), sink to its right, a narrow drawer stack beyond that, then the corner, plus an island with blank side facing the DW, meant I had to do plenty of mocking up to make sure it'd work. I did and like it fine. I put storage for small, bothersome stuff like silverware, cups, and glasses very close by where it could be most easily unloaded, starting by unloading from the left of the DW to the outside of the island, then moving over to unload from the right side. Larger stuff that could be stacked and carried, like dishes and pans, went farther away--briskly stacked on the island a couple feet from the open dishwsher, shoved across the corner and stored in big, spacious drawers on both sides of the aisle over there. Your kitchen is so small you can find a place for everything sufficiently close to the DW if you wish. Nothing's far, after all. That cabinet to the left of the stove is perfect for plating and serving, and it's a casual pivot away from an open DW on the right side. You could install drawers there and put silverware and stove tools up top, dishes (including serving) next drawer down, some of your pots and pans or your baking dishes below that. Glasses might go in an upper cabinet to the right of the stove--convenient to the sink. Cups might go there or wherever coffee/tea happens. Etc. Whatever cleanables would go in the upper cabinets between sink and fridge would be set put on the counter and moved up when the DW door is closed. Big deal.

Thing is, the garage is a part of the whole house and landscape -- you can't really make decisions about it in a vacuum. You need to consider the space you have available (and that's more than square footage -- it also includes slope, approach, corner vs. plain rectangle, and more). Where you place your garage will impact the location of your kitchen, laundry room, pantry, and more; for example, note that changing the garage in your own example greatly affected your back deck. Your neighbors may share the same view, same orientation, same climate, but none of them share the same lot; two lots may sit side-by-side and have different details that push them towards different garage choices. Think about this too: Your garage and driveway will probably require more space than your house. These aren't small decisions. First thing to consider: I see that you're only considering all-the-way-in-front-of-the-house garages ... or completely-behind-the-house garages. Yet you say you have a lot that's not particularly large, but is certainly large enough to consider other garages. Consider the range of options: You're already considering a side-entry garage in front of the house, which is called a Courtyard Drive: Pros and cons: - If you approach this house from the left, you see the attractive front door; but if you approach from the right, you'll be faced with a big, flat expanse of garage, and the door'll be hidden. Also imagine driving up to this house from the right -- imagine turning into the driveway; it'd be a difficult turn. - Note that this garage and driveway dominate the front of the house. You'll have little space for landscaping. Since it is so prominent, you might consider making the driveway something special -- stamped concrete, cobblestones, brick. - The driveway is short, which would be less expensive. The downside of a short drive is that you can't handle many guests. And if you do have guests, their cars are literally in your front yard. - This could be good for elderly or infirm people; everything's very compact. - If you're on a corner, you could have a drive-through garage with doors on both sides. - Lots of people don't like this out-front garage. It does shove the least attractive part of the house to the front, and on many houses it looks like an afterthought. - I personally like these Courtyard Drives only if the house is placed on a very small lot. In situations like that, the size of the yard clearly makes this a practical choice ... but when you have plenty of space and lawn all around, it looks weird to squish the garage in so closely. Garage to the back, either attached or detached: - You'll need a longer drive, which costs more money. You'll also need a "back up pad" near the garage; that is, unless you are willing to back the car alll the way down a long drive. - In the particular house you showed, it means that your kitchen window view will be ... a driveway. - If you're in a snowy climate, you'll have much more to shovel. - You lose your side yard to the driveway; this means less space for landscaping. No trees to provide privacy between you and the neighbor. - This garage eats into your back yard space. Less space for kids to play, less space for a pool or whatever you might want -- and most of us value our back yards more highly than our front yards. - With this type of garage, you'd probably go with a single-wide drive that widens as you reach the garage. - This drive could be straight (like this picture) or could make a 90 degree turn into a behind-the-house garage. Such turns aren't always easy, and they do require significant space. - I think the biggest issue with this drive is that it's confusing to your guests. Do you expect them to pull all the way forward? Stop halfway? Once they leave their cars, they don't have a view of the front door, which is uncomfortable for them. If I had this type of driveway, I'd ALSO want a half-circle drive (or something else) that was meant for guests -- but that eats up the front yard and costs more money. You didn't mention side garages: - A side garage is a halfway point between the two extremes you mentioned -- but you need a lot that's wide enough to handle the extra width. On a one-acre lot, a house with a side garage may appear more "balanced" or "better proportioned" than a more narrow house with a front or back garage. -This type of garage could have a front-facing door or a side-loading door. As I said above, if you want to make a 90 degree turn into the garage, you need plenty of space to make that turn. - The above example shows a garage that's essentially "even" with the house, but you could set the garage forward or back 10-20 feet or so, if your lot or other needs dictates that it's better. Something like this: Some garages are integrated into the footprint of the house: - These garages add to the footprint of the main house, often pushing the master bedroom upstairs -- something you may or may not like. - The doors could face forward or could face the side -- with the same pros and cons mentioned above. - One problem with such a garage is that it's tough to keep the rooms above the garage warm (with all that cold air underneath), and the rooms above the garage will hear the door opening/closing. Finally, don't forget that if you have a sloped lot, you can have a basement garage: - The big negative here, of course, is that you have to walk upstairs with groceries, or just to reach the front door, making it a less-than-ideal option for elderly or infirm people. So, no "vote" for one or the other. You can't say that one's better or worse; rather, the garage has to be developed as a part of the lot and house plan -- but do consider all your options, not just the total-front or total-back options. I suggest you spend some time reading /studying pictures online of different driveway and garage configurations. Consider how they'll appear from the road, and consider how they'll impact your family entering from the garage and your guests entering from the driveway. Moving down the thread, I see that you're considering this house plan: Note that with this plan, you can keep the doors as they're shown, or you can go to a front-facing garage, but a Courtyard Drive as you've suggested won't work. Why? The porch is in the way and the garage is "recessed" about 8-10' into the bulk of the house. No space for a driveway. Also note that if you're talking about enlarging to a three-car garage (Why? A yard building is cheaper storage), that'll change the whole equation. I was driving DS to a friend's house. We drove up the street, and by the time we saw the house number on the house, we had passed the driveway. The approach is northbound, the garage faced south and stuck out in front of the house. Big, handsome house, and you couldn't see it AT ALL because of the garage. All you saw was garage door and asphalt. Seemed like a waste. If the garage faced the other way, it would have created almost a courtyard with the front door, but with plenty of room (big lot), and the back of the garage could be landscaped. Now, the driveway did "branch off": go straight and then turn left into the garage, or split off left to go in front of the house. all that to say, there's a lot to think about with garages! That is soooo common! And it comes from making decisions in a vacuum without considering the lot!

Yes, recessed. I think it adds a warm glow to the space without seeing a specific light source - kind of makes the whole entry area glow at night.

Given the house colors and the hardware on the door, I would be more inclined to go with the antique nickel.

We have a good number of recessed crees, inside, so I am familiar with the concept and how they're installed.

However, for some reason, I am having a hard time finding pictures of outside recessed lights. les917 / anyone -- please recommend models/brands.

Also -- any other comments/suggestions regarding the outside lights? Should I be posting in the lighting forum?

We have the exterior recessed soffit lights on the front of our house and I love them. I once heard a contractor refer to them as moon lights...which is a good name since they give off a soft glow yet produce more than enough light to see the area. The max wattage on ours is 40W. Our entry is 20'+ wide and we have 3 lights there, and I believe there are 8-10 lights over the double garage doors.

There are many types/styles of soffit lights available so you may want to go into a lighting store and discuss the options. I know that LED lights are now available and we're considering switching over to those but I haven't researched how that light looks compared to the incandescent we now have. It would definitely be less wattage! If you put in the soffit lights, be sure to install timer switches.

For DS's window you may have to get some blackout lining.

Gotta ask.......why didn't they put in outlets for the lights when they built the addition?

I hit the summit button too soon! Wanted to add that I have to agree with Les that lights on each side of the door may look squeezed into place. I would bring home one light, have someone hold it up and see what you think before you start cutting into the walls.
Another option would be to add a lamp post close to the entrance when you do your landscaping. If you decide on an additional landscape lighting, I suggest you talk thru this with your electrician so he can wire 'for the future' when he's out there. It'll save you $$ in the long run.

Also, I would place the garage lights to the right and left of the garage doors......no light between the doors.

Good idea about holding a light up in place. I like the idea of lights as 'eye candy', but I agree it doesn't make sense if they are too big. Electrician (and carpenter and plumber...) is DH ... part of the reason why we're doing things in stages.

I like your idea of lights to the right and left of the garage doors - hadn't thought of that.

Any feedback on lighting choices/colors? Thanks!

It depends on your taste, but since you have a traditional home, I'd use more traditional/transitional light fixtures. Personally, I wouldn't use the pewter since I think its color will disappear against your gray siding. Either a dark bronze or black would show up nicely.

Check out LampsPlus for ideas on the entrance. If you have the height, consider a hanging light. If not, look at their 'close to ceiling' lights.
There should be no problem mixing the darker metals with your door hardware.

Your door is beautiful, so a light would just detract from that IMO. We have 4 recessed lights in our porch area. It's a clean look and good light. Also agree to have 2 lights on the garage. Great job on the addition. Landscaping w/color will warm your house right up.

atkillery -- thanks for the lights, check off at least one thing I don't need to return :) V. useful to have the visuals. But where is DH holding them up?

In the front entrance area, we will do either sconces (or far more probably, thanks to input from les917, annz and jab65) recessed lights.

I think no to the hanging light -- not a lot of height there.

marti8a and jab65 -- many thanks for the kind words. It's been a long process. I especially appreciate the reminder that landscaping will warm the house up, but know there are many other things we can do. (I love GW!)

I honestly cannot define what a traditional/transitional light fixture is. But I can say I LOVE this fixture for the garage (both sides) as well as for the post in the driveway.

Am I too far off base on this one? Presenting... lucky number 7...

There are two glass options available with number 7, natural bronze with an amber glass -shown in the picture of the lights mounted on the wall, and also natural bronze with a clear glass (shown lower). I prefer the amber glass, but would like input from the forum - which do you think would look better? Thanks, oldbat2be.

Although No. 7 is lovely, it might be a little European rustic for your home.

However, if you go with it and if it takes incandescent bulbs, the clear glass would be a better match for your home, which is really more of an American style than European. The incandescent bulbs will give the light a nice warm glow at night. Clear bulbs rather than frosted will show off the texture of glass better.

Thanks tinker_2006 and Chibimimi. I really do want that nice warm glow at night, which is why I was leaning towards the amber glass, which is what I thought was pictured on the walls. Now that I look more closely, most pictures of the amber glass look like this, unlit, which is not what I would prefer:

Now that I look more closely, I see that only the clear glass is offered with the candle bulbs (as displayed in the picture).

I think I'd better call Troy-Lighting for clarification. Chibimimi, you may have saved me from a costly mistake (i.e, 20% restocking fee).

Your beautiful house is just asking for Hubbardton Forge lights - They have a couple models which should solve your light issues - warning - they do come with a price tag!!
I picked out 2 possible ideas - but can't import from the catalog, so will have to send the link

Both lights are dark sky complaint - so less light pollution.
I like the first style for your house - for the porch, you could one on each side of the door (medium or large and allow the light to go up and down as light pollution not as much of a problem on the porch.

Then at the garage - go for the matching version but put on the top cover to prevent light from going up.

Just a caution on LED outside - if you have snow - the reflection off the snow lights up the world!!! The city put in LED street lights and the first night I looked out and thought it was just dusk - but was 9:00 at night in the winter!!

HF also has traditional lights but based on your concern about the bedroom next to the porch - I thought these would work.

If you already have ORB finish, I would match with the HF.

I would not worry about "matching" the post light - This is where you could bring out the house style.

Thanks a2gemini. I definitely see that the first product you linked, could work, but I'm still waffling.

Here is latest moodboard. Can anyone suggest lights which I have not considered, but which would work well over the garage doors (one each over each bush, on both sides of the garage).

Last -- size? What guidelines do you have for size? This is space available, here.

Oldbat - How did you get the HF to copy - I finally did a print out and scanned it in.

I used the large one on the front porch and the medium by the garage. I could have used 2 large ones by the garage but cost was a factor (we also have 2 on the deck and one by the side garage door)

We put the house number under the one light by the garage so people could find us - when on the front porch under the vestibule - no one could find us.

I did an alt+print screen, then pasted into paintbrush, then added to my mooodboard. These lights are definitely growing on me....

Yes, the lights grow on you. I wasn't sure when I ordered them but everyone loves them.

Thanks a2gemini, those lights really are perfect for your house. I like how you trimmed them out in white. This seems such a major decision... I am wondering whether I've spent more time over these or on a kitchen countertop surface.

You have a beautiful home and I love your woodsy setting. You are getting great recommendations on lighting, but I would like to make one other suggestion. When you do your window box and perhaps shutters (I like the idea of white), seriously consider removing the two shrubs flanking the garage. They just appear too rigid/boring for such a pretty setting. Replace them with planters with colorful annuals to add some color - potted mums would be yummy in the fall. Your new garage lights can shine on them!

oldbat - I know the feeling - I am in the middle of a kitchen remodel and struggling on the backsplash and then GC wants kitchen color to paint - I am going to tell him Whoa Nelly and wait until the cabinets and backsplash are in first!

I do like Tuesday's suggestion. We used to have the same shrubs and we pulled them out. I am putting new items in this spring but not quite there yet - so it looks a little bare.

This is probably going to be no help, but I just have to say I love what you did with the front door.

This will be of even less help, but what if you did the same thing over your garage door as annkathryn has over hers.

I love your front door! I like number 1 in the darkest finish and number 5. :) Your door is kinda craftsman looking to me so I think 5 would look good. I wouldn't do silver with the grey cause i think they would blend in too much :) Your transformation looks awesome!
