do what dave said ... but what he didnt say was.. and i will yell .... DO NOT MOVE THEM NOW ... its just too close to the heat of summer.. it is stressed from one planting.. and we dont want to stress it ... as the heat grows in july/august.. if you are in z5 MA ... you would do it in either late sept/oct ... when the other trees leaves turn colors. .. or immediately after ground thaw in spring.. thru the end of april ... which would give it 8 to 10 weeks to get the roots pumping water.. before the heat of next summer ... there is nothing to do about those trees .. short of buying the lot.. etc ... but i sure dont like the one giant one.. that seems to overhang your house ... which might be an optical delusion of the camera.. in the last pic .... its above a green conifer .... either the juniper or GG ... if it could fall on grass.. ignore it ... what i think about with those pix.. is the heavy machinery that was needed to build your house .. which looks rather new.. and the long term impact of soil compaction and root crushage.. on those giant old trees.. i would suspect long term .. 10 year .. decline .... ken

Stacey - I've been meaning to thank you for your review a few weeks ago of The Objects of Her Affection. I always read your review threads and this one especially intrigued me. So went over to amazon, checked a few more reviews, and ordered a used copy. Am now reading it and like it very much! The combination of all of Sophie's problems and a plot revolving around a museum of art - with wonderful descriptions of art objects and their pursuit - is fascinating to me. Many thanks! As to Hemngway - I read most of his work a long time ago, when I was in my twenties and was gulping down the "great" writers. I was living overseas and wanted to be a Hemingway heroine, but one who survives! My favorite was For Whom The Bell Tolls, and also some of his short stories. His writing would be too stylized for me today, but he is good for certain periods or moods in one's life. He's incredibly skilled at setting scenes with simple language. Last week DH and I tried a new little Italian bistro in town and, wanting a dessert, looked at their home-made gelatos. One of the flavors was "grappa raisin". I looked at DH and cried "Grappa! Hemingway!" and ordered some. Delicious!

Already the first quote by Lope de Vega was such a nice start of the day. The following Joseph Krutch quotes started out with a quote I read to my cat and so much followed wich I wanted to read to some other people. The Thompson quotes had some things to ponder. Lewis Thomas, love every single observation and quote and I will re-read the whole page again when I am not in a rush. Thanks, Don.

While I don't believe in Nostradamus and his prophecies, much of it is already true and if we don't change the rest of it may become true at some time. Margaret Chase Smith is one person we need now in Washington, alas... The Ellen Willis quote # 1 I really like and Stanley Crouch I need also to re-read and quote a few to some people. Did I say a few days ago that I get out of politics?
