Wash your hair, rub in copious amounts of warm coconut or olive oil, let set on scalp for 30 minutes, wash out oil and let it air-dry. Do this once a week until your scalp is re-hydrated.

Tegrin has a shampoo that works incredibly well.

I just bought a bottle of that new Clear shampoo last week and that really works. It has tea tree oil in it which is recommended for dandruff. They were all out of the women's shampoo so I bought the men's Clear. It was a dollar cheaper. Why is that men's stuff is cheaper? It leaves my hair soft and no itching or dandruff on my scalp.

Best results so far? 1 T sugar, mixed with 3T shampoo-before you take a shower. Scrub scalp with this and then rinse. You don't even have to shampoo again. My son was so wary of this, but I loved it so much, even after I didn't need it, he tried it. Now he begs me to do this for him! He's 13 or he'd do it himself. No point in expensive shampoos that are full of chemicals. You can use what you already have. And nothing to lose if you try it. The sugar is for exfoliation. I didn't make it up, but I don't have the link. I can find it if you want.

After washing my hair and towel drying, I rub into my scalp some glycerine. This also helps the hair to grow. It's great for dry skin anywhere on your body.

Walnutcreek.....I get my bottles of glycerine at the drugstore....Walgreens is where I found it. I'd call my local drugstores and ask if they have it before running around hunting.

I keep one bottle in my bathroom to apply after a shower. Just blot yourself dry, then apply. I keep my other bottle in the laundry room where I wash my hair. I put about a quarter size amount in my hand, rub my hands together, then massage the glycerine into my scalp, then work it down through my hair. Don't rinse it out.

Glycerine is also used in making some foods. You might find it where Wilton candy making supplies are located. Glycerine is also used in homemade rubber stamp cleaners.

I bought some Clear shampoo today, could not find the Tegrin in my WalMart. Will definitely try the sugar method and will call Walgreen's about glycerine availability.

I am very leary of the coconut oil/olive oil treatment. That is simply because many, many, many years ago, I rubbed olive oil into my cousin's damaged hair (too much bleaching), let it sit, then washed, washed, washed, and washed - we had to wash it so many times - to get the oil out and were truly never successful in getting it all out.

When conditioning your hair with olive oil that you leave on for an hour or even better over night, before you start washing it put the shampoo on your greasy head of any olive oil or other treatments and message it around THEN stick your head under the water. As you said, Walnutcreek, it will not come clean otherwise and you will keep washing and washing and lose the whole purpose of the treatment you concocted. There is the secret. Stay away from the water until you have shampoo all over. If you rinse it and feel there is a little oily area then just shampoo that. When it is clean, use your regular conditioner and you will be fine.

I use mayo every week and because I wash my hair often, I empty out half of my shampoo into another bottle and fill both up w/water. I don't have dandruff this is just how I take care of my hair. Hope this helps and ties in with the other advice you have.

Whatever you do, DO NOT shampoo daily. That will definitely dry your scalp and cause itching,flaking and more dandruff. I shampoo no more than three times a week.

My stylist said to use a brush with firm bristles all over your scalp to loosen any dried particular before shampooing. Always shampoo twice if you use a dandruff shampoo. Once it's under control switch to a phosphate and sulfate free shampoo/conditioner which are not drying and so much better for your hair.

It is not good to wash your hair every day.

Sometimes this is not just 'dry scalp' but a condition where your skin is shedding and replacing cells too fast.

My DH developed sensitivity to OTC body washes and shampoos about five years ago. He now uses Neugrogena T/Sal shampoo and we hunt around for washes with no parabens or preservatives. (Most bar soaps are free of these, but most liquid *anything* has preservatives. Look on your bottles of soap, moisturizer, etc. The list of chemicals is *astounding*.)

walnutcreek, I put too much coconut oil in my hair once...ended up shampooing with Dawn dish detergent.

It worked great, but probably took most of the "good" oil back out too!

I'll stick with my glycerine. I don't have a dandruff problem, but the glycerine is good for the skin and hair, keeps it from losing moisture and shouldn't cause any allergic reactions at all. It takes very little, so is economical to use. I have long hair and only wash it once a week and I NEVER apply heat to my hair.

I've been using the Clear and it's wonderful. Worked quickly too.

I am still happy with the Clear. It has worked very well for me. No more dandruff or itching for the past two weeks.
