Flipping a mattress

The thread about not knowing the length from the width of the fitted sheets, reminded me of flipping the mattress.

I never know how I flipped my mattress last time. Just rotated, or over. Does anyone have a way of marking their mattress or something, so they know how to flip it the next time?

I usually flip one time then rotate the next. The last time DH and I were pricing mattresses for our son, we were told by "the guy" that you don't need to flip them. That they were designed to not need it. I don't know if that is a newer mattress thing, or what he was talking about. It pretty much goes against everything I was taught.

For years pillow-top mattresses were touted as never needing flipping. Now they are reversing that pitch. It used to be a pillow top was only on the top, now they sell them top and bottom, so you can still flip the mattress. Makes for a real deep mattress!

You were VERY lucky to have seen your diamond. I lost one while out shopping one day. I went back over every step I'd taken and of course I could not find it. I looked all over the parking space and where I'd walked. I went back through the department stores. I felt terrible to have lost it. I've learned that a ring should never have fewer than five prongs so if one breaks, the stone will not fall through the space. I had four prongs, one broke and the stone fell out. Gee, Pesky, you have a lot of energy!

Anyone tried flipping a single side mattress and adding a topper?

Jen, We got several more years out of our expensive pillow top mattress by using a memory foam topper. First, I just cut the pillow top off and threw it away. With a mattress topper, the bed felt as good as new. Then, when the mattress itself started showing a permanent dip, I turned the mattress over and used the "unusable" side of our mattress with the topper. The "wrong side" of the mattress was extremely firm but still felt ok with the memory foam on it. That worked great for another couple of years but now the bottom shows a dip in the middle so it's time for a new mattress. I'm tempted to find a firm hotel-style mattress and then tune it up with a good quality topper. It sure seems that even the best mattresses come with pillow tops that don't last as long as the rest of the mattress.

Katsmah, I used to be a Shifman dealer and I actually called up and protested to Mike Hammer (owner of Shifman) when they came out with this promotional bedding line, because in my opinion, it was 'trading on their name' while building a product that was outside their normal construction standards. His reply was that "We have to offer something in that price point to stay competitive". I ordered a couple sets for customers, but was unimpressed with the promotional bedding they made, and soon stopped flooring it. Pressure from Bloomingdales caused Shifman to eliminate many smaller stores such as myself because we easily beat Bloomies prices day in and day out, and when Shifman had to choose between Bloomingdales and small independents it was a no-brainer whom they were going to go with. That led me on a quest to find a similar company building products equal to Shifman's premium line (Master's Collection it is now called) and I found I could get a like product from Royal-Pedic out of California, whom I now carry and think it the equal of Shifman in every respect. In the all-cotton line of beds, from either company, there is a considerable amount of raw material cost. The mattress cannot be made quickly - it takes eight man hours to produce the mattress itself - which is why they cost what they do. Bloomingdales is not much of a discounter, regardless of the *sale* price tag they hang on the item. For about $ 400 more you could purchase a true all-cotton bed from Royal-Pedic from various dealers. Duane Collie

There is a lot of propaganda out there about what is good in a mattress. Try not to listen too much to what sales people tell you. They will tell you the information they want you to have to buy the bed they get paid the most off of. I worked at a mattress store and learned tons. If someone tells you the coil count, make sure you ask the guage of wire. Thin springs will poop out quicker than thicker springs. Warranties are hog wash too. They will only warranty a "dip" in your mattress once it meets their pre determined depth. This depth is WAY deeper than what you would deem uncomfortable. Also keep in mind that you need a mattress protector. It automatically voids the warranty if there is any stain on the mattress cover. Even if it isnt something gross. I bought a spring air for myself years ago. It has lasted about 6 years and I am starting to not only feel, but see a dip. My best friend has a Beautyrest Black. She hates it. It has dipped on her in 6 months. We are both looking into Termpurpedic Luxe. Also, you really cant compare apples to apples when matress shopping regular coil mattresses. They make mattresses different for every store. It may only be a minor tweak, but they are not the same.

We flipped ours every six months when we changed the clocks but Larry was always the one who remembered if it went over or rotated that particular time.

Ours doesn't flip, found that out after we got it home. Bottom is just flat and plain, bummer!

our new mattress is like bigack's...flat and plain so we can't flip it...the thing is 15 or 18 inches thick...(i can't remember) we should NEVER hit bottom on it!

My mattress is about 6 years old.
Came with instructions on flipping and turning.

I do both regularly!

Flip in the spring and turn in the fall. That's what I do.
Fall with the leaves "turning" color is how I remember. I do it with time changes too.

I just did mine last week didn't want to wait on DS to come over and do it.

I got everything off the bed and surroundings then I pulled the mattress out as far as I could to the side toward me (by holding on to the edges and th mattress cover and got it to stand up straight (the long way ) on the bed then got it as close to me as I could then kind of upended it and it fell back down on the bed now the mattress cover is under the mattress but I don't care!!

We had a mattress once which had arrows on it so you'd know which way to flip it each time. I think the arrow on one side went east and west, on the other side north and south, if you get what I mean. You could mark yours on the tag with a Sharpee marker with little arrows.

Our current mattress now would take two men and a boy to flip. It doesn't get flipped. I think the salesman said it didn't need it. It's the worst bed we've ever had.

That's a good idea, having a mattress with arrows on it.
We flip ours regularly, but I don't always remember which way we flipped it the previous time.

It's a king, and a PIA to flip. lol

We put ....1-2-3 on the lower left corner, with marker. Then 4-5-6 on the other corner, 7-8-9 on the other, etc., So that every three months we look at the lower left corner. We know when to rotate, and when to flip. (the numbers will be right side up) Very easy.

I have a newer mattress that you don't flip, just rotate.

We rotate it about once a month.

We just simply marked ours - 1-2-3-4 . 1) in the middle top, 3) middle bottom, on the other side 2) opposite side from the 3 and 4) opposite side of 1. Make sense? Clear as mud? The idea is....the number at the top (where pillows would rest) follow in order. When it's time to flip, bring the next number up so it's under the pillows.

that so funny but when dh first moved back here, he was living at a red roof inn...they did have markings on the mattress for flipping...

now with all these pillow tops all you can do is rotate...we usually do it 2x a year...
