High end mattress advice

Stopped at the Duxiana store yesterday. Beds look great and feel great in the store. But geez, $6000 for a bed? Might be worth it if it really is the last one you'll ever buy.

European Sleepworks advertises around here too. Cheaper than Dux, but still high.

According the the brochures, these guys say that the big stores sell lots of names, but there's really only a couple places where beds are made. They push firm mattresses, because it takes longer for those springs to wear out. They use cheap foam, which loses its shape in a couple years. They recommend flipping the mattress, because then you move the sagging parts to the bottom.

Better steel in the springs, more of them, and latex foam ensure the top brands last for decades. And they are eco-friendly and chemical free (which, if true, is appealing).

Given that you can't rent a bed for a week to really evaluate it, who do you believe? Do these more expensive brands deliver? Are there other brands I should look into?

Had my king DUX for about 6-7 years. It was OK during that time. Got a all latex matress and matching box spring and thinks it's great.

Wife still uses her queen DUX in the other bedroom and loves it (I snore loudly..:-)

Have you looked into the Simmons Beautyrest Black Collection? We bought ours at Macy's and are very happy with it.

Harry - I DO get it. Expansion and growth are a rarity in a flat or down ecomnomy, even for the Ultra Wealthy. You must have made a fine professor, as you have macro economics down pat. I DO get it, the net worth of the majority of the world's wealthiest people is down, so is the majority of everyone's. Does this mean they flee to a financial bunker and stop spending? Heck no, some do , just like some of the merely rich do, just like some of the middle class does, and just like the everyone else. However, many are still out there doing things normally some are even bargain buying like never before: I didn't make up Rolls' or Gulfstream's #'s people are buying them! Even in a downturn big co.s are buying too: Delta just gobbled up Northwest and B of A just wrote a mega check for Merrill. Don't let the media persona of Buffet fool you. A few years back all he'd talk about was how flying commercial was the best thing to do and a private airplane was not smart. What's he do a bit later- buy a Gulfstream? No he buys an entire company full of private jets and keeps the largest Gulfstream there is on standby. Same with his home, his modest $200k +/- Omaha house is real enough, but what about his 15 million dollar place in SoCal that you don't hear about??? Same with his sob story about his secretary paying more INCOME tax than he does. That's because she MAKES MORE INCOME which is subject to income tax than he does. Think she pays more dividend income than he does? Who's AMT tax bill do you think is larger at year's end? Don't take the media's cookie cutter soundbites or eye candy as the absolute truth or big picture. Remember W.R. Hearst's contempt for the masses? "They'll belive what I tell them" Same is true in the media business today. He's an anomaly, the very wealthy spend trainloads of $$$ you just don't see or hear about it because the majority value privacy, anonimity, and their time above all else. DC - while I don't entirely disagree with the premise that the luxury goods sector is down as a whole like everything else, I do wonder about the sources of these stats? Some blogger from Orange Co. doesn't exactly instill confidence in me for the trends of the nation or world as a whole. I gave you 3 examples of rarely debated "luxury" items that have seen rises in sales during a weakening economy. I guess it boils down to what's going to be considered a luxury item and by whom. Does a $1000 Prada purse qualify, or is a luxury handbag more likely a Kelly Bag from Hermes at well into 5 figures these days? I don't think BMW qualifies anymore these days, but they are always included in "luxury car" rankings and catagories by most auto professionals. Another point I'd like to make that I think few around here get or agree with is that companies making luxury or high end goods don't rush to lower prices at the first signs of a downturn. Some not even after many quarters of neg. results , and some not ever. It defeats the purpose of positioning an item or company as "luxury" or " high end" if you are going to start charging lower prices because sales drop. You either create more demand or a better value proposition or you deal with flat or no growth for a while till you figure it out. Some don't and they fold. Businessmen with any seasoning and experience accept that slaes go up and down just like stock prices and comodity prices. They hope that the broader trend is a rise in the metrics that they use to manage and measure their business. So , don't count on a cut rate deal from Sub Zero , Viking or Meile in the frist part of next year or even at all. Long before they consider lower prices you'll see "incentives" like fridge, oven and cooktop full price DW at 25% off or Viking will throw in a set of their knives when you buy theri range. Miele might extend their warranty another couple of years but I'll bet the farm you won't see a sale from a German firm.

This is funny you posted this, because I was wondering today if an ikea bed would work in the guest room. I think I decided against it for now. I dont know anything about MASH but I did consider their beds before I bought mine from dwr. I like that bed in your photo. Where I live, there are scorpions and centipedes and I wanted a bed with little surface area touching the ground. I have the dwr modern bed in walnut and really like it. I got it at their semiannual sale for 15% plus free in home delivery. I think they have a couple storage options also. Holly sent me a link to this thread to see if I could help you with some specifics. I'll just tell you about some of the jobs that I've done to see if that helps you with any specifics budgeting information, and if you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. Let's see. I'm doing a job right now in East Memphis with 35K worth of Dynasty cabinets in a painted maple finish. 8' ceilings with 36" tall cabinets and 6" worth of crown molding, a custom china hutch and wood hood. And a few other details like mostly drawers and an oven cabinet. 8K worth of Cambria for the counters and 10K worth of flooring, and 3K for the backsplash. I think her appliance budget was 10K, but she says she doesn't really like to cook all that much. The overall budget for the job is around 75K, and most would consider the home fairly high end for an older home in the area. I did a home in Collierville in Kemper Cherry cabinets for 48K, but that included a dining room hutch, breakfast room pantries, an entertainment wall, and a powder room vanity. 42" high cabinets with molding in 10' ceilings. The island used some funky shaped specialty cabinets, and she did an exotic granite that was 12K. Not a lot of specialty items in it, just a lot of cabinets. I would call the home a high mid grade family home. I'm working on a new build in the Forest Hill Irene area that will have around 70K worth of stained gray Dynasty and Omega cabinets in the two kitchens. (They fell in love with the Porch Swing desk area that I have in the showroom, shown below.) They have a very simple modern aesthetic and VERY tall ceilings with 27"s stacked on top of 42"s. The Silestone counters will probably end up being around 20K, simply because they have to purchase whole slabs and they want different colors in each kitchen and bath area. I think it's around a 8M build price for the home, so definately upper end for this area. Or just about any area! Dynasty Porch Swing on Cherry So, I think your 100K budget would probably be overkill for this area, unless you are wanting something with a lot of details like corbels and onlays and lots of glass and stacked cabinets. That can add up quickly! Even so, upper end in this area isn't quite so costly as East or West Coast areas. I work with a couple of full service licensed general contractors if you'd like some names, or just a good old boy installer if you'd prefer to be your own GC on the job. They have had a lot of stains from a large dog and a toddler. With a little elbow grease, everything has come up. From my experience with a wool area rug, the product called Incredible cleaner is magic spot cleaner. Highly recommend: ible+stain+remover&qid=1617188152&sprefix=incredible+%2Caps%2C174&sr=8-5 My understanding is that 100% wool carpeting is the most durable you can get.

what I like about the black collection is that a lot of the models come with removable pillow tops (not just the cover)....that's what usually gets worn and can be replaced...I recently got one (not a Black but from the hotel group since I slept on a particular model called the Felicity II)....and really like it...

My bed is a few years old but it's a Beautyrest and it's comparable to the Black collection. It's my second Beautyrest because I really loved the first one, but eventually it needed replacing.

I did quite a bit of research before buying a new bed and most of what I read said that no matter what, a good quality bed would need to be replaced every 7 or 8 years. Now if you weigh 50 pounds you may get a bit more time out of it.

Base your purchase on the best bed you can afford that feels the most comfortable to you, but don't think it will last a lifetime because it won't. Most warranties are limited.

While lifetime sounds very optimistic (unless you're very old), I don't think 15-20 years is out of the question. Some people are harder on mattresses than others. As with fuel economy, YMMV (your mileage may vary).

You might try Royal-Pedic, a west coast brand that's high end and very very nice. The standard cotton/innerspring mattress and box spring with a 3 inch latex/wool topper will run about $4000-4500 in a king size, about $1000 less in queen. This is far superior and has a great feel for the price range. We looked at many high end sets including Kluft, Shifman, Hypnos. By far the Hypnos was the best, hands down, but was quoted at $8000 for the Eminence (a bit over the budget to say the least). You should take the time to find a dealer and try the Royal-Pedic. We purchased a set 3 months ago and have not slept this soundly in many years. Our previous set was a top of the line S&F purchased 7 years ago (and it felt like 100 years ago).

Since you live in Oakland, cross the bridge into SF and check out McRoskey Airflex mattresses. They are on Market Street, near the city hall. The showroom is at street level, and they manufacture them 'upstairs' - as they have for over 100 years. Well worth the visit!

I bought our McRoskey queen nearly 25 years ago. It is still "as new" feeling. When our kids grew out of cribs, we bought each of them a McRoskey too.

Had a Dux for about three years. I liked it, my wife loved it.

We got a Tempurpedic for the guest room. We tried that, I loved it, my wife double-loved it.

We've been sleeping on a Tempur for maybe 10 years now. No regrets.

I have a FloBed Latex Mattress that has split cores with 3 latex cores on each side and a topper over this with a soft zipped up mattress. There are no fire retardant chemicals due to the organic cover have a layer of soft wood inside. I was able to move latex cores around to get my comfort level and exchange latex cores up to 90 days.

I had to live with a bed rock hard for years and this time around, I need I wanted to be able to tweak a bed to fit my needs and comfort as well as not out-gas since I am chemically sensitive.

I have had my bed for almost 1 year and 5 months now.

There is a lot of propaganda out there about what is good in a mattress. Try not to listen too much to what sales people tell you. They will tell you the information they want you to have to buy the bed they get paid the most off of.
I worked at a mattress store and learned tons. If someone tells you the coil count, make sure you ask the guage of wire. Thin springs will poop out quicker than thicker springs. Warranties are hog wash too. They will only warranty a "dip" in your mattress once it meets their pre determined depth. This depth is WAY deeper than what you would deem uncomfortable. Also keep in mind that you need a mattress protector. It automatically voids the warranty if there is any stain on the mattress cover. Even if it isnt something gross.
I bought a spring air for myself years ago. It has lasted about 6 years and I am starting to not only feel, but see a dip.
My best friend has a Beautyrest Black. She hates it. It has dipped on her in 6 months.
We are both looking into Termpurpedic Luxe.

Also, you really cant compare apples to apples when matress shopping regular coil mattresses. They make mattresses different for every store. It may only be a minor tweak, but they are not the same.

All things considered I think Tempurpedic is the most comfortable mattress, last the longest and has the highest percentage of satisfied customers.

As per my experience you should consider memory foam mattress because of its foam and durability.

I purchased a memory foam mattress that has latex in it. It's a Luxe-Pedic and I think they are only online but have a return policy. I considered Flobeds and Tempur-Pedic and some others, but the combo sold me. It's awesome and very good quality. Second choice was Tempur-Pedic.
