Do songs get to you emotionally?

I just listened to "Diamonds and Rust" by Joan Baez, which brought back a flood of memories from 1975. I was surprised how much it hit me. A boy, that I fell the hardest for ever, had just broken up with me. I had known him through high school and dated all through college. He broke my heart into little tiny pieces. He came back into my life a year later then left again, then again 2 years later. The last time I was dating the man who would be my DH and I told him to get lost. Funny, though, how a song from 35 years ago can bring it all back like it was yesterday even the emotions.

Oh, yes.

Diamond Reo's "one more night" reminds me of my Stoney dog, when he died. It can still make me cry.

And Country Bumpkin (not the CB we all know and love here at the KT) can choke me up a bit still.

Rodney Atkins' "If you're going through hell" reminds me of my son and when he was going through a really rough patch.

There's one by Willie Nelson, too ... "maybe I didn't love
you, quite as much as I should have ..." my es-husband tried to get me back with that song.

There's more, but these are the one that come to mind immediately.

This One's for You by Barry Manilow and Photograph by Ringo Starr.

I played these two songs (and others) on the air when my furbaby EKO died. They still bring tears to my eyes when I hear them.

This is not about Santa .... this is about something much deeper. I agree it is the daughter's decision to make, however, how the daughter has chosen to manage this situation is inappropriate. If there were not underlying motives on the part of the daughter such a topic of disagreement would not have caused this breach. The Santa scenario is a mere vehicle for the daughter to use against her mother to punish her for a historical 'perceived crime' against her. Such situations are inexpressibly complex. One thing is for sure .. if the grandmother was disproportionally better off financially than her daughter and was socially connected, had a large circle of friends and a significant other with whom she was happy .... I can guarantee the daughter would be behaving very differently. Unfortunately the daughter is taking advantage of her mother's loneliness as well as her emotions. The daughter may have a deep-seated grievance but whether it is legitimate is another matter. Without doubt the daughter cruelly lacks judgment and has the classic attributes of the Narcissist.

I lived in my former house for 15 years and put my heart and soul into making it exactly what I wanted. I said many, many times that I would have to be carried out and would never, ever be able to leave it. I knew I would be absolutely heartbroken to have to walk away from 15 years of plants that I nurtured and fussed over. Then we decided to move, for several reasons. Let me tell you- the stress of prepping that home for sale, de-personalizing everything we had designed for our own specific uses, and trying to sell it in a dead market just about did me in. I was ecstatic to walk away and never once looked back, nor did I shed even the first tear. I felt as if I had escaped to be honest. Emotionally divorcing happened during the decluttering, POD loading, and staging with neutral objects. Most of the things I loved were in storage and my attachment to the gardens just sort of ... waned... in the face of all else I was having to deal with. Once you make the decision to sell move forward and don't look back. It can be a huge and daunting task and you need all your focus just to get through it. Future projects are always more interesting than former projects anyway, and a new house is the most interesting project of all. I will always love that garden and I have tons of photos and memories to reflect on when I feel the need. I know it is not being looked after properly (no one else could ever do it as well as me!) but I got good money out of the sale and it has enabled me to move on to the next phase of my life, so in that respect served me very well. Life is a journey, not a destination, and to have new things you must give up the old. It's the circle of life.... and I'm rambling terribly. You'll do fine when it comes to leaving for the last time. The excitement over the new house over rules all else.

"If my child tested positive for lead - I'd dump that old POS and never look back...." My son has an autistic spectrum disorder, and like many parents, I have had him tested for lead, mercury, etc. Also like many parents, I have since found out that many of the lead-testing protocols are complete B.S. developed and promoted by charlatans trying to extract money from parents desparate for 'cures'. Of course, I have no way of knowing how valid your childrens' tests and/or test results are, and how valid the results of your home's tests were/are. My point is just to suggest that you really dig into the company and testing methodology you used to make sure they are highly reputable and scientifically validated before selling a house you love to move to a place you're lukewarm about. It would be a real shame for you to find out it was all for nothing down the road...

I've never been attached to furniture, but I remember when I was little,we would travel from Alabama to Wisconsin every summer to visit family. We always stayed at grandmas. Grandma had this light blue shag carpet in the living room. I never really thought much about it until when I was about 18 or so, mom announced that all grandmas kids were going to chip in and replace the 30 year old carpet at grandmas house. I was very upset,and to my surprise ALL 5 of my siblings were too. She ended up choosing a light blue,non shag carpet. That helped,but not much. That house never felt the same again. She also had this big painting of a lovely Spanish woman. My grandpa was in insurance,and the painting was a payment to him. (She always called it "grandpa's other woman") I don't know why,I always loved it. Those are really the only two things that stick with me about her house. She died last year. A few weeks ago, mom and all 9 of her remaining siblings got together to clean out the house. Imagine my delight when a large box arrived on my doorstep,containing that painting. It's very big and old fashioned, and does not go with anything in the house, but it will be displayed on the hall wall with love.

"Amazing Grace" always gives me a lift--such a good, hopeful song. And I must say that I get a kick out of Tina and Ike Turner's "Proud Mary". Almost anything that Mavis Staples sings, especially "Wade in the Water", and I dearly love Willie's rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening" which sends me into paroxyms of giggling. Music seems to make me happier and often gives me a good laugh!

My son's girlfriend was killed in a car wreck when they were in the 11th grade and they played One More Day at her funeral. I get emotional everytime I hear it now.
My good friend, Jennifer, and I used to sing In The Garden at church and now I tear up everytime I hear it. When it is sung at church, I will look over at Jammer and he knows the tears are coming and then he tears up too.

When my Dad was dying, we played "The Prayer" by Andrea Bocelli. He loved that song. Not one of my siblings or I can listen to any of Andrea's songs anymore, because we literally fall apart.

I'm with Czech Chick...I can hardly listen to Israel's version of "Over the Rainbow" without tearing up...it's just so good...and he passed away shortly after recording it...

MaryAnn..."In The Garden" is one of the few songs I can still play from memory on the piano...It too was played at my mother's funeral and chokes me to no end.

I love "Animal Song" by Savage Garden...i don't know why...but it makes me tear up!!

Amazing Grace done on the bagpipes totally brings me to mush...there are a bunch more but none I can think of off the top of the hat!

I love "The Rose" by Bette Midler and we have a Gaither Band CD that has "America the Beautiful" w/ "God Bless America" woven thru it, I can't listen to it in the van because it makes me cry.

I must look up some of the songs you folks mentioned, I haven't heard them and I would like to.

They do until I get used to them. But funny you should post this because I was just blasting a song over and over in my car. I had made a religious CD for my parents and was testing it and the song, "I Bowed on my Knees and Cried Holy" played I just went pensive. The man singing it had an awesome voice and the congregation clapped in the end. Just looked up the lyrics and it's touching just reading them.

Far cry from what I usually listen to, but I'm glad I know the song now.

I grew up hearing my DM sing hymns, "In the Garden" was probably her favorite. I can't hear it without "hearing" her.

My DF's favorite song was "Tumbling Tumblingweed." At his funeral I sang it silently to him.

My DH and I had two favorites, "Because" (you come to me..) and "Always" (I'll be loving you always..)

I can't hear any of those without tearing up.

Is this a coincidence or what? I set here reading this thread, all the while listening to one of my favourite recording artists. Although she was relatively an unknown till afer her young death, this is one of my favourites. But I do love to hear this song sung by various artists. So thanks for the above link.

I'm really bad. I cry at everything. But hearing "Moments" by Emerson Drive, or seeing the video, absolutely sends me over the edge. I can't believe I'm sitting at my desk crying just thinking about it.

"Always" and "Deep Purple" are guaranteed to evoke my tears. I'm also a sucker for schmaltz like that from "The Merry Widow" ("I'll See You Again..." and just about all the arias from Italian operas. I repeat my grandmother's tears hearing "I'll Take Ye Home Again, Kathleen", "Danny Boy", and on and on (The Irish must own the rights to 'melancholy'!)

I don't know the girls name that sings the song that gets to me the worst. Everytime I hear it I burst into tears because it is so true for me about my Daddy.
It is called "Daddy's Hands". Daddy was a hard working man, honest and loved his family more than life itself.

Deb, "Daddy's Hands" has the same effect on me. It was released shortly after my own dad passed away. It was years before I could listen to that song without crying and it still brings a tear now and then (20+ years later).

There are others too, but I can't say the names right now (that bad bad memory of mine).

Oh yes, music can bring me to tears easily, especially a magnificent talent like Andrea Bocelli or Kiri TeKanawa. It can also bring you right back to the moment in time that reminds you of a far gone time. Memories of parents, siblings, boyfriends, pets, our kids. There are so many great artists in all our pasts and so many wonderful sounds. It's funny how we take it so for granted but imagine not being able to hear music, how sad that must be for some.

Czech & Liz---Love, love, love Israels version of Over The Rainbow--I'm trying to talk my GS in to singing it for his solo in HS choir competition- I didn't know Israel passed away, sorry to hear that!

There is one Irish song that can raise emotion within me; It is "The Irish Blessing". Often, it is sang at the close of Celtic concerts. When sang by the right Balladier, in the right setting, with the right musical instruments played by good musicians, it is very emotional. Otherwise, its just another nice blessing.
