Survey -- How long did it take you to attract hummers?
Comments (34)Hi irish rose grower! If you have been following my threads you will know that I did the feeder a little longer than a full year before I saw a hummer at it and now I have one male that comes 3 times in the early morning and 3 times as the sun goes down. I now also have 2 or 3 females that come all day long. Looking back at it all now I am wondering if I may have had a few visit last year and not even known it as I looked at the feeder a few times a day, but I now see that unless we are as lucky as hummersteve that my approach to seeing hummers last year was not enough. Even with 3 or 4 regular birds visiting my feeders everyday it is rare that I just look out and see one there. It does happen, maybe once or twice a day, but the typical experience for me is to sit there and look and usually within 5 minutes one will come along. Usually one will come and feed quickly and run back off! I would say that the average stay at the feeder seems to be 20 to 30 seconds, with some as short as 5 and some up to a minute. They are small and fast! Not having a feeder could make it harder to just look out and find one as the flower possiblities are far more than just looking at a feeder quickly. If you have not done so I would suggest putting a chair outside at least 15 to 20 feet from some of the plants that you think they would like this time of the year and sit fairly still for a half hour and enjoy your garden. Best time might be 7:30pm. They might surprise you with a quick fly in and fly out. I grew up on LI. Comments (6)This isn't new either, but last year I ordered allium bulbs from Bluestone Perennials. I was so impressed with the flowers this year that I put in a second order with them just a month ago for more alliums (purple sensation) and bright pink aster plants. Bluestone was sold out of the vivid purple asters I also wanted so I bought those from Burpees. Years ago Burpees was the best place to buy vegetable seeds and their flowers were also high quality, but their reputation is not what it once was, so we shall see how their live plants fare. I was fortunate that a steady rain fell for several days immediately after I planted these acquisitions, followed by sunny days and rainy days off and on since. I also had to transplant some daylilies given to me by a friend, along with a lilac that was unhappy with the poorly drained soil where it was living and a flowering crabapple that would surely have stretched its roots into the waterline newly installed when we drilled our well. So these transplants have also benefitted from the precipitation situation and spared me hauling water to them. If anyone knows of an online place that sells Hot Summer Echinacea and/or Cherry Cheeks Daylilies, I'd be most grateful to hear. I've been drooling over both since people have posted photos of them in this forum, and I have a perfect place for a couple plants of both species....See MorePJ, did you get hailed on?
Comments (14)There might be a good possibility of TX and OK having about an equal number of tornadoes. Haven't seen any figures on it, but I suspect someone has that info. The "straight winds" is a term for "we don't really want to call it a tornado", kinda like they don't call "dust devils" tornadoes, in California. In actuality, most storm damage comes from twisting and churning winds, not "straight line", as the term implies. Hurricanes are the exception, in that they do tend to be more like "straight line" winds, in one direction (at a time), although they actually have a circular motion. In reality, lots of strange effects occur in storm winds, such as the "wind shear" that pilots talk about, where there is a sudden, and strong, down draft, that in some cases, has been enough to literally flatten buildings. I have seen tornadoes in a great many places, myself, including Miami area, both on land and on the ocean. They can occur anytime/anywhere you get thunderstorms. The super cells are the worst, as they tend to spawn many twisters, and not just one or two. "Tornado Alley" actually covers the whole middle of the country, right up to the great lakes. My experience in mountain vs. plains areas, suggests that mountains tend to lessen the impact of severe weather, for whatever reason, while the plains tend to allow severe weather more frequently. I figure air currents are partly associated with that . Having seen the difference in various kinds of storms, tornadoes are, in my opinion, much more dangerous, as there is little or no warning. These days, you can see a hurricane coming for days in advance. Next most dangerous are tsunami's and storm surges associated with hurricanes, as the destructive force of water, is astounding, when coming in off the sea, or any very large lake. Probably the most impacting of all kinds of disasters, of course, are earthquakes and volcanoes, with volcanoes being the worst of the two. The most worrisome, happens to be island volcanoes, where it is possible that enough of a volcano could slip into the sea, to cause a tsunami of epic proportions, on top of the volcanic eruption itself. MN has lots of ways to remind us, we are rather puny creatures, after all....See MoreDid you get one for Christmas?
Comments (16)We live in Canada and so I had to do a lot of research about the e-readers before I got one for hubby this year. I looked at the kindle and the kindle 3G which is available in our area, I looked at the Kobo from Chapters, the Sony e-readers and tried to find the pandigital ones. I ended up with the Sony touch because the others you have to have an account with "those" stores. The Sony you don't, you can download a book from anywhere. He can also make his own notes on it, it plays music, pictures etc. Now you CAN'T download a book to the ereader...you have to put it on your computer and then on to the reader. To me it doesn't seem to be a problem as the thing holds soooo many books, why would he want to pay extra just to be able to download it directly at that moment. Anyway...he likes it, guess that is all that matters :)...See Moresocks
