I didn't want an e reader. When my kids asked me I told everyone I didn't want an e reader. I wanted to wait a few more months, do a little more research, try them out myself and then decide. Guess what my DH gave me - a Kindle. So I'm trying to be a gracious recipient. I think I would get more used from an iPad.

I'm curious to see what others post on this topic.

bought one a couple weeks before christmas. dh didn't want to get one, saying we wouldn't use it and it's another tech toy to charge & care for lol. i have 1 book on it and barely know it and dh has 150 (all free) and sleeps w/ it LOL. i'm getting myself something else LOL like a tablet andriod or ipad (waiting 2 see what comes out of CES this wkend) so i can see magazines in color. BTW we both love the i-ink better than color. my dh reads every night for hours before bed online and has insomnia. since switching to the kindle he has had less problems sleeping, we think because 1 - the i-ink is easier on the eyes and 2- when he can't fall asleep right away he'd get online and now he can't. ~ liz

Liz, my son has the IPad and loves it. I enjoy using it too when he comes to visit. :)

Maire, I know what you mean about making your own choice. It's a pleasure to do that, and then you know you will like what you have. Just the same, it was sweet of your DH to get you one, and I think it can be returned in a certain period of time if you really don't like it. About the ipad, don't you have to pay a monthly service fee to use the internet part of it? (I barely know what I'm talking about, but I thought that was the case.)

I have a Kindle and like it a lot. I think I would like the page turning feature better on the ipad. Of course, there is a big price difference between the two.

Oh socks- it was sweet of DH and I shouldn't complain that's why I'm trying to be gracious. And I don't want to return it for that reason. I even suggested that he download some titles. I think what annoys me is that my daughter told him I didn't want one and he still bought it.

It is really easy to read. The electronic ink is amazing. As a retired librarian I miss the Title page and the publishing and copyright information. And I still haven't figured out the location information at the bottom of the screen.

I got a Kindle for Christmas. I also have an iPad that I am using to write this. A wifi model iPad has no monthly charge but you have to have a wifi source to get on the Internet. The 3G models have a cost to use.

You can get publishers info on the Kindle by using the back page feature although most books open at the beginning of the writing. Try doing a page back to get to the cover and inside info.

The number of free and low cost books available quickly offsets the cost of an eReader.

I use both and love the way they synch with each other so I can pick up where I left off even when I use the other device. I prefer the Kindle for reading in bed with a book light and my iPad for daytime indoor reading.
The kindle also is better for outdoor reading and fits easier in my purse.

My DH asked our kids to get me a Kindle. I in turn asked our kids to give one to their dad instead since I have so many hard cover books in my 'to be read' pile that I really don't want a Kindle right now. I got a Kindle, the extra fancy model, from my kids. I swear, they never listen to me. LOL

I guess I'll just give it to my DH until I've made it through my book pile.

I love the iPad my DH got for me. I normally use it at home where we have it on our WiFi network, but I do have the 3G version so I will be able to use it in the car, etc. The good thing about the 3G use is that you can use it some months, but not others. I intend to be on the road this month, so have activated the 14.99 service for this month. You are NOT required to have an ongoing contract. You can just buy 30 day increments at a time for $14.99 for 250 MB or $24.99 for unlimited.

We live in Canada and so I had to do a lot of research about the e-readers before I got one for hubby this year. I looked at the kindle and the kindle 3G which is available in our area, I looked at the Kobo from Chapters, the Sony e-readers and tried to find the pandigital ones.
I ended up with the Sony touch because the others you have to have an account with "those" stores. The Sony you don't, you can download a book from anywhere. He can also make his own notes on it, it plays music, pictures etc.
Now you CAN'T download a book to the ereader...you have to put it on your computer and then on to the reader. To me it doesn't seem to be a problem as the thing holds soooo many books, why would he want to pay extra just to be able to download it directly at that moment.
Anyway...he likes it, guess that is all that matters :)

I have had my Pandigital Novel for several months now and absolutely LOVE it so glad I chose it over some of the other choices, it does so much more than just ereader. I use it every day. I have the library on it full of books and have only purchased 2 the rest are all free ones, since it uses epub format I can borrow from the library too.

WOW! So much information...thanks everyone - went to B & N this afternoon and poked around a bit. Going to a 'class' there, and will learn a bit more...I had to laugh at Jodi. You should see my 'to be read' pile, too, PLUS went and got 4 books for $3.00 just the other day. We'll see...

I'm in Canada and bought my son a Kindle. There are other websites besides Amazon that you can get books from. I would have to ask him where he gets his from. There are tricks to everything...... :o)

After checking out the various ebook readers, I may get a Kindle eventually too.

I have no desire to own a Kindle or any other type of book reader. I really don't understand the attraction to them. But to each her own...one thing that surprised me about the Kindle was that thing packs a bit of weight to carry around with you.
I would like an IPad, I think I would use that a lot. But I'll have to wait until they come down in price.

One of my gifts from my boss was a Kindle, I was shocked when it arrived because I had contemplated getting him one. I really didn't especially want one, I just don't have time for recreational reading these days. But now I am thrilled to have it, and I am reading more than was able to do so before.

I really love the ease of downloading the books and have several very cheap or free ones on there already! I love the Kindle forum that Socks recommended!

I love my Ipad, don't know how I got along without it for oh so many years! lol, I don't have the 3g, almost bought DH a 3g just so I could steal his card! I'm waiting to see what changes are going to be on the new one.

I have an IPod Touch and use the Kindle app to read. I would like the Kindle better if it had other uses like the IPad.
