It's officially Spring--at last
Comments (62)The recipe was from Euell Gibbons (see link): " Euell relates, "I peeled the roots and cut the starchy cores in thin slices and put them to dry on clean papers in my attic. At the same time, I decided to see if the cabbage leaves improved by drying, so cut a number of the cones of tightly rolled leaves into thin slices and put them to dry on separate papers. While working with these products I was acutely aware of the skunky odor which seems to permeate every part of the plant. After a few weeks of drying the odor disappeared, and as with other arums, it seems that drying and aging dispels the biting pungency and acridity which makes them inedible in the fresh state". He goes on to relate that he ground some of the root chips and mixed the meal half and half with wheat flour for pancakes. When the familiar burning occurred, he dried the remaining chips for a total of six months for further aging! Again, Euell notes that he ground the chips to a fine meal, mixed it half and half with wheat flour. This time there was no burning sensation at all and the flavor was pronounced, but very pleasant, a bit like cocoa. By adding butter and maple syrup, the pancakes were "unusually good"." Comments (81)I ate haggis at a wedding celebration where the groom is a Scot. It wasn't the wedding dinner, but a Scottish dinner put on by all the Scottish family for the guests - for a taste of home for the Scots and a taste of Scotland for the Americans (it was a destination wedding in the US). I can't remember if someone brought it from Scotland or if they bought it in LA and transported it to the wedding site several hours away. One of the groom's cousins is a celebrity in Scotland and she read the Robert Burn poem, "Ode to a Haggis" which included plunging a knife into it for a bit of drama. (I couldn't understand a word of the poem). As I recall, I expected to be disgusted by the taste, but found it not bad. I wonder if the quality/source makes a difference. The next night, we Americans made an American meal for the guests, many of whom had never been to the US. It was interesting because there were few adventuresome eaters...not many would try the fresh vegetables - everything in Scotland seems to be cooked to death...Jello "salad" was met with surprise ("tastes like dessert, not salad") but I don't blame them there. One thing that struck me was a couple of people who were brave enough to try the olive poppers I made commented that they'd never eaten an olive before. But they loved the haggis!...See MoreMy crazy dog, Leroy, ate my Christmas goodies!
Comments (14)Earlier this week I went to the supermarket and bought all the chocolate goodies .... 3 boxes of chocolates, 5 boxes of scorched almonds, 3 bags of choc coins and one box of After Eight mints. I hid them in a big box (crockpot size) on a low shelf in the pantry ... bad move! DH came home Tues night and found gold foil from the bags of coins all over the floor! I put a heavy weight on top of the box and felt secure in the knowlegde that she couldn't possibly move the weight, lift the box lid and cause any more havoc ... wrong move! While we were at work yesterday she had herself another little party! DS got home first and text me to say there was scorched almonds, after dinner mints and a huge amount of confetti sized cardboard packaging all over the kitchen floor!!!! I don't think she's actually consumed alot of the chocolate (luckily!) but she's torn alot of the packaging - two of her favourite passtimes has always been shredding cardboard and dis-embowling soft toys! Now that box is up on the HIGHEST shelf in the pantry with what remains of the goodies! And I have to brave the supermarket again to replace what's gone .... GRRRR!...See MoreHow to calculate enough cake for 40 kids?
Comments (50)It looks like chocolate cake, it smells like chocolate cake, it tastes like chocolate cake - but it definitely is NOT chocolate cake. it's cloying sweet and trashy. Kids just love it. I used to be very fond of trashy things myself when I was a kid. Refined taste develops later in my experience. Ingredients: 1 cup self rising flour 1 cup chocolate drink mix (1 cup of the powder, of course. Do not use cocoa!) 1 cup sugar 1 cup vegetable oil (but NOT olive oil) 4 large eggs 200 ml sour cream Method: Sift flour and choc. drink powder together, mix well, set aside. In a separate bowl - Cream eggs and sugar for 4-5 minutes Start adding oil slowly as you keep beating Once the oil is incorporated, add sour cream, beat for 1 more minute. Add dry ingredients in one go, stir just until combined. Pour into oiled & floured pan, bake in 340 F oven for 30 or more minutes until toothpick comes out not smeared with batter but only with a few moist crumbs (and perhaps a smattering of batter). DO NOT overbake or you'll end up with rubber cake....See Moredobesrule
