Label your boxes. Write on the outside of the box what room it goes in in your new home.

I don't envy you--it's a big job. Are you packing your own boxes? I prefer doing my own so I can mark on the outside which room each box goes in the new house.

Also, don't move anything you aren't using. You said "day 1" of moving so does that mean you're just starting? If so, sort out things and either have a garage sale, donate them or toss.

If you have the opportunity, go to the new place and clean and put down fresh liners in the cabinets and drawers if you use them. Clean the bathrooms and kitchen good and you'll be ready to unpack right away. Take clean bedding, towels, coffee and cups for the next a.m. and anything you'll need for 24 hours. That way you won't be digging around trying to find stuff. Make a list before hand and have it ready to get the things together you'll want/need.

Don't unload your dressers. They pick them up and move them full now. That's a huge time-saver.

If you have a lot of books, don't try to pack too many in each box. Ask me how I found out why ;-)

Make sure everyone you need to contact has your new address, especially utilites, Social Security, banks and other places that may be sending you money or bills.

Don't envy you having to pack up and move to the "other side of town"....If it's the part of town you've always wanted to live in..no problem "movin on up".

A lot depends on whether you're doing it yourself, having a bunch of people help, just a few, hiring movers or what. What kind of time frame on moving makes a big difference too.

My best tip EVERYTHING goes in a box, no matter how small. Too many little piles here and there that I'll just toss in and carry.

I didn't mess with markers to label boxes much. I printed out a bunch of pages with each room, including basement, laundry and garage listed on it and just taped one to the box and circled the room intended. Saved a lot of time. Was a good spot to put comments when needed. Some color code things with colored dots and color code the rooms to make it easier. I found it worked great to just say the room.

Make a supply box with items you'll need. Plan on using paper plates etc on moving day. Keep plastic bags handy. If you have to take legs off a table or something, all parts in a bag and tape it to the bottom of the table. Don't unpack dresser drawers, move intact. Carry out the drawers and the frame, reassemble in the truck. Do the same thing hauling it in.

Plan on things getting broken and don't sweat it. If something is valuable take extra precautions. Lay out rug runners or tarps to protect floors.

General comments: Have plenty of 2-wheelers and 4-wheelers. Back up your computer before moving. Transport your computer YOURSELF. Clean the new place before moving in. Better yet, hire someone.

I always packed one box to be able to survive if we arrived late at night and no time to unpack. In it I put toilet paper, soap, towels, the coffee pot, coffee, mugs, a few lightbulbs, and sheets and a blanket. Too many times we were finally saying good bye to the mover about midnight or so, and that box helped us that first nightand the next morning. Made it seem kinda like home from the very first.
