Clear finish over wood conditioner

Recently I have Loewen all-wood casement windows installed in our house. Before the windows were installed the exterior brick mould and sill was painted indoors following the help from some of the forum members (see the link below). Initially I was thinking of staining the inside of the frame. However, the windows with vertical grain Douglas Fir jamb and trim look so beautiful in its natural color that now I have second thoughts about staining. If I want to put water based clear finish, do I need to use any wood conditioner such as Minwax pre-stain conditioner before I apply the clear coat? Or is it better to put some sort of natural stain (e.g. Minwax oil based natural stain) before the finish? Which process will preserve the natural grain and color of the wood better?
